A baby cottontail literally ran up on my shoe back in august. He was so tiny he barely had his eyes open. The neighbor was mowing the yard and I believe the nest was destroyed. I found one of his siblings squashed by someone’s foot. We took him in and have had him now for about 6 months and he is just great. They said cottontails are not good “pets” however I completely disagree. He uses the litter box. He jumps and plays around. He is quite the character. His name is Suki. I’ve had lots of dogs and cats over the years and the cottontail is the most fun to watch and play with. Update: We did contemplate putting him back in the wild after he got bigger however he was showing signs of being a lil different than your average wild cottontail. I believe some of the best “pets” you ever could have are the ones that find you instead of you finding them. I had a cat for about 14 years and the way we unexpectedly met was by her running in my house after I opened the front door on a cold & extremely rainy night. She was so small her whole body could fit in my hand. She stayed with me ever since and was so great to have in my life. I believe this lil rabbit will be similar to that. He eats bunny treats from our hand now…loud noises used to make him scared & hide..now all that happens is he just perks his ears up a lil. I don’t expect him to ever be held like a cat but he seems to be heading towards the type that would play by Jumping on you and off again. He used to run & hide when cleaning his “area” now he just watches just inches away. I read all the articles I could on cottontails and the majority disagreed with having them as pets. This cottontail seems to be a exception. He is a joy.

Cottontails are much more panicky than domesticated rabbits. (Which is saying something.) That makes them much more likely to freak out and scratch you or even hurt themselves. If you are going to keep one as a pet you have to know this and take special action accordingly.

I've had 2 bunnies, one is still with me [there was a divorce, brothers got old enough to choose violence] Can confirm, that they do not know fear. They are made by it. Molded by it. And them come out with the same audacity and defensiveness of any horned goat/sheep/ram-like animal. Swinging and ready to fight. Still scared of the surprise treat though. [My fault for forgetting how close to his face the blind spot starts]

I had a chinchilla rabbit (named for the silvery coat similar to a chinchilla) who would "sing" when the vacuum was running. I thought the vacuum wheels had developed a squeak, and I must have checked it a dozen times, until at some point, I stopped moving the vacuum and just let it sit while running, and still the squeaking happened. My next thought was "oh no, it's something wrong with the motor" or osmethign like that - I was dreading what kind of invasive, expensive repairs I was looking at (or the cost of a new vacuum)... and then I turned it OFF... and the squeaking carried on... and I was able to hear where it was coming from... that goofy rabbit of mine, all stretched out in her cage, totally chill, eyes barely open, and her little mouth open wailing and warbling her little high-pitched vocalizations. I had understood those sounds to be made when rabbits were in pain or great fear, but she was so relaxed, I had to rule that out. So I just say she was "singing". What a character.

I had a litter of 3 cottontail bunnies that I raised when I was 10. They always ran loose in the house but if I thumped my foot on the floor anywhere in any room they'd find me and run to me. They were fun. They'd also somehow get out of their box at night and jump on my bed so when I woke up they were stretched out sleeping next to me. (As a kid my mattress was on the floor, because when I was 6 I had a phase where I would roll off the side of the bed and landed spectacularly on the floor. hahaha). I loved those bunnies.

We had cottontails who lived on my college campus. Had two families specifically outside of my dorm. Would sneak them food despite the policies against feeding the animals. Campus Security didn’t mind it as much as they would also feed them, same with most of the janitorial staff. Led to us having some really chill bunnies for a while.

I stopped my car to put a letter in the box, and there in front of it, a few feet away, was a little animal. At first I thought it was a chipmunk, but looked again and saw that it was a tiny bunny that looked just like the one in this video. So cute. It sat there for about 30 seconds, then hopped into the grass around the mail boxes. It seemed to be alone, no mother rabbit or siblings. I hope it survives living where it is, or goes somewhere safer. This is in the middle of town, not really a good habitat for wild critters.
