@@adamwhite202 It really depends what you want to make, you can start creating simple models using blender, than try modeling something more complicated, adding animations, and eventually learning scripting, when it comes to more complicated things like guns, cars, and mods like ace, yah its hard since you need to know how to code things, model, animate

@Lithane972 жыл бұрын
Honestly, seeing a gaming company develop an intermediary "test" product in order to help them develop their main product sounds like a great idea. Gives them the ability to work in a smaller sandbox and work out kinks and experiment freely, without possibly breaking or negatively affecting the main product. Looks like they've put some stellar work into developing new and great looking features and those graphics are absolutely stunning.

The game - the whole ARMA series and especially Flashpoint - has a hidden layer that only the inhabitants of the former socialist bloc will appreciate - especially Czechoslovakia, but probably also Poland and maybe East Germany. I am always impressed by the atmosphere of the island, the architecture of the buildings, the interior of the houses, the landscape. This is exactly what socialist Czechoslovakia looked like in the 70-90s (and the landscape looks like this more or less today). I grew up in a village in the 90s, so I can see it there. I'll buy the game just to walk around.
@elmo2you2 жыл бұрын
As a western expat who moved to the Balkan region, the whole atmosphere always feels so familiar (even today). In fact, I have been driving around the Arma 2/3 landscapes for plenty of hours (in fact, days for certain) without conflict, just because of how much I was in love with the feeling the landscape/atmosphere gave me (surprisingly close to how the real world counterpart makes me feel). What I've seen so far from Reforger, pretty much blown my socks off. I'm unlikely to actually ever/even "play" Reforger; I've got my reasons. But I'll gladly put the money down for buying it, just to support Arma going forwards. Maybe I'll even walk around in it at some point. But even if I don't, I'll buy it anyways.

Two big takeaways from this for me were 1. Think of this as more of an in-progress tech demo as opposed to even an alpha version. Good start, but a long road still ahead. 2. Don't expect something to be added to this unless it's *well* better than what's been implemented in previous titles. I like the editing tools, very modern. Reminds me of my time messing around in CryEngine. Overall, really excited. A3 never really gave me the warm fuzzies when playing it that A2 or OA did. But this? This looks promising.
@CodenameRune2 жыл бұрын
Exactly this is I think the big takeaway. I doubt the features we see here will be similiar in ArmA 4 even - so seeing what the engine allows us to do is absolutely stunning and wild. I am glad to see such a positive and calm response from many people here, weighing what they are seeing.

ArmA 2 was much more gritty and grounded than Arma 3 is. I really hope ArmA 4 sticks to the present or cold war and adopts a much more dreary colour palette because Arma 3 (and even this to a certain extent) is too colourful.

Here's a summary I wrote up of (most of) what Dslyecxi said: Improvements: - Animation system improvements that make possible: - Granular control over your posture, your speed of movement, and leaning. - Impact effects are better - Dry reloads vs. tactical reloads have different animations. - You can fire AT from a prone position. - Weapons can have their own animation sets. - You can point. - Getting close to an obstacle will cause your weapon to tuck in. - If you get in the way of a door as it's opening, you'll stop it. - You can hit things with the butt of your gun now (melee). - Crew-served weapons cause your screen to shake now. - The traditional action menu isn't used anymore. Actions show up on the objects that they correspond to. - Vehicles have more-realistic handling. Rolling is much more likely. Driving is more interesting and requires more of your attention to avoid an accident/rollover. You can do 180s using the handbrake. - The map, compass, and flashlight are all items you need to hold to use. The map UI is the same in previous games in that it's a 2D screen overlay rather than being rendered on a 3D in-game model. - Visuals - There's microterrain - There's distant shadows now. This was one of Dslyecxi's most-wanted features. - Distant grass is still not a thing. - Clouds cast shadows on the ground. - 16:26 - He gives a great example of how the distant shadows and lighting effects make it a lot harder to spot units that would be easily spotted in Arma 3. But this is an old problem in multiplayer games: people will turn off those effects to better spot the enemy. - Lights don't bleed through walls anymore. - You can put a flashlight on the ground while it's on. - The lighting at night is one of the most impressive aspects of the visuals. - On sunny days building interiors will look dark to people outdoors, and people indoors will similarly be somewhat blinded by the sun when they first look outside. - Soundscape - Distant gunfire sounds better. - Nearby cracks of gunfire sound better. - Much better VOIP. - Radios have limited range - Direct (non-radio) VOIP has filters applied to sound realistic if the person is nearby or the kind of environment the person is in (in a building, outdoors). - Effects & Destruction - There's more smoke and dust. Smoke collides with the environment to an extent. - UI & Game Master - Artificial Intelligence - The AI can shoot while they move. - They'll move away from bullet impacts (e.g. if you're sniping at them). - They'll do area fire / suppressive fire. - You'll hear them giving orders. - They're not totally accurate. - They seem to see through vegetation like it's not there. - The max AI in multiplayer is around 100(?). - 27:46 - It looks like modders are going to be able to have a lot more control over the AI. - Longevity - It comes with a full suite of modding tools. What I want to see: - Distant grass, or some other way of not revealing someone's position at a distance when they should be concealed. This is a huge deal, it would make a big change to how the game plays. - Better distant terrain textures. - Foliage that impedes movement and is very noisy. - Inclined terrain should slow people down more, stamina should be more nuanced, with the terrain surface type having an effect. Terrain should be an obstacle. - Below-ground trenches, foxholes, and other structures. - The obvious ones: Performance, AI improvements, multiplayer improvements, etc.

There are so many wonderful scenarios forming in my mind to take advantage of this new lighting. I'm so taken aback by what a step forward this is, not only for ArmA but the milsim genre as a whole. I think being on console will be a good thing for this one. They lack any real milsim/tac shooter experience, especially on this level. Not to mention, it simply makes ArmA as a series more accessible and brings in a whole new audience. I view it as more of a console game, honestly, but a good experience nonetheless. And for 30 bucks? Yeah, might need some work, but it's good I think. Oh, and since these are updated assets, and furthermore there's the ability to interact with vehicles- I'm not sure it's too unrealistic to expect more vehicles (with internals) in the future. Imagine PiP tank gunning.

One big extra thing to add for those unaware is that gear has gotten waaay more depth! More clothing slots such as jackets, trousers and boots now being separate. But also that webbing is made up of individual pouches and can be customised! They also are individual storage containers! No more need for thousands of different uniform and vest variations! (Save for some pre made ones for easy use.) If the system is kept (which Im sure it will!) It means things like fully customisable plate carriers can be a thing (either modded or if ARMA 4s setting is modern) or adding things like bandoleers that actually function. Hopefully we will see a UI akin to Ground Branch's customisation system.

Holy shit if this is the foundation of Arma 4, then it has the potential to be the biggest BIS success so far! The editor tools alone could spawn completely new experiences (imagine the horror games that will come out) and genres of games, the potential is seemingly near limitless! Not sure if I'm gonna buy Reforger, but I'm certainly gonna get Arma 4 once it comes out. However I might get Reforger just to play around with the new editor tools and familiarize myself with the improved scripting language. I wonder if the BIS and user creations in Reforger will be compatible when Arma 4 when it comes out? That would be so sick as that would mean Arma 4 could start out with a good head start when it comes to content! That would actually be a sick business move, as it means the content creation to Arma 4 is basically partially outsourced to the community even before the game is released! I don't even view that as lazy or a bad thing to do - to the contrary I see it as a genius move to enhance cooperation with the community and playerbase to create precisely the experience(s) the community wants from the game. I have endless praise for every development studio that is so incredibly mod/user-creation friendly as BIS - it is a totally win-win situation and a no brainer.

As for the gras in the distance, on could have a shader that 'draws' waving dots/lines on distant green patches to simulate moving gras. And off cause the OPF solution to lower the models in the distance into the green gras. Or drawing only gras nearby players and objects in the distance , and use the above mentioned shader for the gras on the surfaces in between. Looks like a great start, love the new light!

Great video. As a long time fan and player of the ArmA series, this video gave me great insight to what ArmA will become.

I'm interested but what worries me is not whether or nor reforger is technically up to it, but what advantages there are to having reforger when arma 4 comes out

It depends when Arma 4 is due to release, it could be a year or two so this is a good interim between Arma 3 and Arma 4

Thank you very much for this assessment! From what I read in the comments on Steam on Arma: Reforger, many people didn't watch the Stream by the devs or didn't know what they're getting. They thought they'll get an Arma 4, instead of exactly what you stated (and what I expected): a platform showcase. They showcase the platform they will develop Arma 4 on, show it's capabilities, give players and modders the ability to check out the new features and maybe already prepare mods for when Arma 4 will come out. Hell, they can already mod the shit out of Reforger.

I've been playing BIS since the OFP demo but gave up soon after ARMA 3 release, frustrated with the lack of advancements in critical areas. I honestly never thought I'd play another BIS game and I probably won't be buying Reforger but it gives me huge optimism for ARMA 4; seeing Reforger gameplay gives me the same buzz I got playing that first OFP demo and I'm sure anyone old enough to remember that feeling will agree that's a very special accomplishment. You took your sweet time BIS but well done and good luck for the future!

One last thing: Press F for scroll wheel. We hated you, but you also brought us many funny memories as well.

I used to have a gaming rig where i played Arma 2 ACE long time ago. I switched to Xbox because I'm just too busy and I just want to sit on the couch, put headphones on and play. If this means Arma is going to consoles, I'm supper excited!
