I'm curious. I read the history of the field, and it's full of inhumane treatment of mentally illness and I'm not sure about the science papers. I get a bad feeling about the papers. It feels it could be abused to make money like has been for years when religion can be a good thing. It feels like snake oil salesmen selling me something. How do you work in this field knowing the history of lobotomies, electric shock therapy, and ETC. Also. Too many mentally ill people themselves go into the field. I view it as a problem.

Hi Karen, Thanks so much for making these presentations available. They are proving to be very helpful in studying for the LCSW exam. I found an inconsistency with the DSM-5 in your description of Bipolar I at about 15:56. You said--if I understood correctly--that depressive symptoms must be present for both Bipolar I and II diagnoses. My understanding is that depressive symptoms are only necessary for the diagnosis of Bipolar II. Though the majority of those whose symptoms meet the criteria for a fully syndromal manic episode do experience major depressive episodes during the course of their lives, I was under the impression that a history of depressive symptoms was not necessary for a diagnosis of Bipolar I. Thank you so much for sharing your teaching like this!
@karenmagruderlcsw-s96552 жыл бұрын
Hi Dahna, Great question. That's helpful feedback that I wasn't very clear on that. You're correct, for Bipolar I they must meet criteria for a manic episode, which "MAY have been preceded or followed by....major depressive episodes". On Pg 139 of the TR, it says, "the vast majority of individuals whose symptoms meet the criteria for a fully syndromal manic episode also experience major depressive episodes during the course of their lives". However, this is not required for dx. Hope this helps!

Hello, I first off want to say thank you for your time and knowledge in being a valuable resource to understanding the DSM-5. I am following along using my DSM 5 textbook and in the Intellectual Disability section under specifiers it states, "The various levels of severity are defined on the basis of adaptive functioning, and not IQ scores, because it is adaptive functioning that determines the level of supports required. Moreover, IQ measures are less valid in the lower end of the IQ range". Can you or someone please clarify the essence of those statements? Should we be assessing based off IQ scores, adaptive functioning, or both? If both please explain the assessment tactic and how we would weigh our options and apply it. Thank you again.

It’s currently 2 am. I’m a 15 year old high schooler with no intention of going into the field of psychology. What am I doing here, you may ask? Well, let’s just leave the answer as: I’m bored, and I have a slight obsession with this particular topic. It’s cool to be in this comment section, among all of these highly educated people. EDIT: Oh yeah, forgot the whole point of my making this comment. Great video! Made everything very easy to understand
