Some radios like Sangean 909X and Tecsun PL-880 are half DSP. The FM section is full DSP with the antenna signal direct to the DSP IC Si4735 while the 0-30 MHz circuit is analog with double conversion and the last IF enters the Si4735 antenna input which is tuned fixed to the IF frequency . They use both technologies and take the best from both. This is why you hear mute on tuning the FM band only on these radios. The air band also works this way in all DSP radios. You will not hear any muting while tuning the air band in any DSP radio.

I have plenty of radios along with XHData808 but gradually I started to hate the soft-mute feature, it is so annoying and kills all that old radio romance. Imho, DSP is evil in the radio world, only analog, only hardcore!

For me when it comes of repairing analog is easy to repair practically but in modern dsp is required modern repair

An extra benefit to analog radio is that you can build a BFO and can tune around the ham bands to make their voice intelligible

After 30 plus years of analog , R70 and 71A Icom and a SDR Play I picked up my first portable , a XHDATA with the dreaded muting, I don't find it a bother as I use it more for targeted listening, stations are in memory or directly entered on the keypad . If I am tuning slowly I'll be on the Icom's VFO or since I got it looking at a waterfall on a computer screen.

I notice that you don't own TECSUN S-2000 or S-8800. They seem very popular receivers too. But are they good receivers?

Well done; thank you for sharing.

So the DSP is like an SDR but controlled by firmware running on a microcontroller, instead of a computer software program?!

Hello sir, what's the differences between the PLL & DSP? Tq

Hello.. I want to buy a portable to listen baseball broadcasts while I’m at the actual baseball game. Would there be any advantage to having analog in this situation? Is there any delay in digital that would not sync well with a live game?

Have you noticed that the squelch doesnt open fast enough when listening to airband? (Xhdata)

can you run 3/4/5 shortwave radios on 1 antenna at the same time (not on a switch) has anybody made a wiring harness to do such a thing and how did it work?

I have a Tecsun pl-880. I can’t detect mute-on-tuning for the MW and shortwave bands but can detect what sounds like some muting on FM. Is this a DSP type receiver?
@jeffking2914 жыл бұрын
The PL-880 is not DSP.
@maxit-mw4 жыл бұрын
Partially DSP, see my explanation above

But sangean 909X has no chipping while tuning at all. It works just like analog. Not sure if it is DSP really.

Which is better for having the lowest RF noise? I'm a bit disappointed with my PL-660. It seems there are signals coming in but it is all or mostly static.
@OfficialSWLchannel3 жыл бұрын
the problem is not the radio, it's that there is too much noise where you live. I will post a video later today talking about it

My Tecsun PL-880 has a number of "hidden" features, and one of them aalows me to get rid of the muting by setting it to 00.So, I have no mutung affect on the MW, LW and SW bands. HOWEVER! This setting doesn't affect the soft muting on FM. But the muting on the FM band doesn't bother me.

Analog receivers have a lot of background noise these days

A good communications receiver could beat most newer radios, 80 dB of rejection was normal with some communications receivers... unfortunately real communications receivers have disappeared (Icom, Yaesu and Drake for example).
