Thanks Tachsman. The Cd numbers you cited were published in September of 2010. We'll contact Nissan to see if we can get an answer on whether the number for the 2012 production vehicle was improved to something better than 0.268. After all, we would have rounded up to 0.27 for a 0.268 number. Still, the additional 10 percent downforce doesn't seem to be in question.

@sailorenlil I'm not disputing that the GTR is faster around a track. But is it as fun? Everybody talks about speed, acceleration and lap times. What I am trying to say is: if you are not a fully fledged racing driver, then get the car which satisfies you most, regardless of how well it handles or accelerates. I have heard that the GT2's steering feel is 'alive' and second to none, plus I know that the handling is tricky to master. When you're in control of a car like that, you feel alive.

@kphillips012 Well the results of the 2011 Targa Tasmania are in. And here are the top 6 in the modern class: 1. 2009 Nissan GT-R 2. 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STi, +03:39 3. 2009 Nissan GT-R, +05:37 4. 2008 Subaru WRX Sti C-Spec, +06:52 5. 2009 Mazda RX-8 SP, +6:54 6. 2011 Porsche GT2 RS, +07:55 And here's the kicker: The GT2RS was driven by a former pro racing driver and former Targa Tasmania winner, Jim Richards.

Actually, if you look closer, the 2011 took off earlier. But they're absolutely right, the new GTR really is the best bang for the buck. While it's also capable of beating several super sports comparable on paper, with a smaller engine + less HP.

@DSPORTRH9GTR I remember reading it somewhere on the web. Can't tell you where, unfortunately. I was reviewing large amounts of data on the 2010 and 2012 models to see which one to purchase. I was dismayed at the actual small 0.004 improvement in the Cd! It makes sense when it seems the only change is a 3rd crease with LEDS in the bumper and a minor change in the rear end diffuser.

I'm a Ferrari Fan, and own several Italians, but to me this is the best all-around super car. And...it doesn't attract attention. The best way to eat someone's lunch on the road is for them to underestimate your car and not take you seriously. That's a serious mistake with this car, no matter WHAT you drive. This is the best, and it's reliable! No timing belts to change every 5,000 miles costing $5,000.

I think we actually talked ourselves into getting a new 2012 GT-R for our magazine to keep as a long-term project car. Seems like DSPORT will not have a shortage of GT-R video and magazine coverage.

It's not just ECU reprogramming. Intake and exhaust diameter has increased too to work with the revised programming to improve power and economy. We've requested Nissan's position on the different LC versions. I wonder where you got the Cd numbers to three significant figures. Was this published in Japan? We can't find those figures anywhere. Our contacts at Nissan only have the Cd figures of 0.26 and 0.27.

@kphillips012 Like I said, I'm talking about Rally - where no one knows the course during the race itself, so every turn is a surprise and drivers must be ready to deal with anything and everything (like the aforementioned bumps, dust, debris, and rain). The Corvette Z06 (actually 2 of them) took part in the 2010 Targa Tasmania, but didn't amount to much (they finished 16th and 22nd respectively), while 3rd and 4th were taken by GT-Rs (the Lambourghini Gallardo won this in case).

2010 or 2012 model? We can tell you this. We test drove the 2010 and 2011 models and we never really motivated to purchase a R35 GT-R as a project vehicle for the magazine. The 2012 changed our mind. Of course, you could save a great deal of money purchasing an earlier model used. The savings could be used for some serious upgrades. If no plans to track the GT-R, the '10 with upgrades might be a better choice. Improved cooling, aero and suspension for the 2012 make it better for the track.

Having covered the 24hour race at the Ring, I can honestly say that Porsche makes some bad ass vehicles. Of course, the pricetag for a Porsche reflects the millions that the company invests in motorsports. It makes sense that a 911 Turbo S costs $160K. What's hard to believe is that Nissan can produce a GT-R at $90K that delivers more comfort and comparable performance.

@kphillips012 On a straight line perhaps? Just how does the GT-2RS handle on say, Wet Roads? The GT-R can take them quite well (and so can the '00+ 911 Turbo, being AWD itself).

@kphillips012 Which has yet to happen (or did you miss what I wrote about the 2010 GT3 RS finishing in 6th place behind a Lancer Evo?) As of the moment the only really worthy opponent of the GT-R in the Targa Races is the Lambourghini Gallardo, which did beat it in 2010 by 2.5 minutes, and partly because the GT-R of Tony Quinn (which finished 3rd) had a few technical problems.

@kphillips012 Somehow I doubt it. Unless they decide to go AWD and maybe even move the engine for better weight distribution, the GT2 will still have a bit of a disadvantage in the handling deparment (remember, this is on public roads where all the cars have to deal with hazards such as bumps, dust, debris, and in case of rain, water). Why else is the Lamborghini Gallardo the GT-R's fiercest opponent in the Targa Tasmania (and to an extent, the Mitsubishi Evo, just trailing 1 or 2 places)?

@blacky05hotmail There's plenty that can be done. The factory engine and turbos good for at least an additional 100 horsepower with exhaust, intake and ECU tuning. Beyond that, there are turbo upgrade packages for 800+ horsepower. There are also aftermarket upgrades for the transaxel to allow it to handle the torque levels associated with 1000 horsepower. If you want an all-around bad-ass car that can still run low10s and possibly 9s at the drag strip, a built R35 GT-R can get you there.
@kageryu31113 жыл бұрын
@DSPORTRH9GTR The GT-R tuners should be in the 8s already with built GT-Rs. Tune only GT-Rs are in the 10s and there are stock bottom end GT-Rs in the 9s. The fastest GT-R right now is still in the 9s but traps high enough to do a mid 8. AMS and the other tuners need to get their cars out already.

@sailorenlil really ? isnt porsche world renound for there handling and superior engine placement? lol yes. im aware but you cant assume that AWD is the key. the zr1 pwns the GT-R on drags and tracks without the use of aw drive. and the gt2-rs has the same hp as the zr1 but far lighter lol i think its inevitable that this will dominate.

@kphillips012 I was thinking the same thing about you. Anyway I'm keeping an eye on the 2011 Targa Tasmania now that the Dodge Viper ACR has joined in the fun (one of the few American sportscars other than the Chevy Camaro (which did well in the Targa Newfoundland Rallies in 2008 and 2009) that looks to have potential in the Targa races).
@sailorenlil13 жыл бұрын
@kphillips012 Simple. In a race like a Rally, the drivers must have full confidence in their cars. Since they don't know if the next turn will have a nasty patch of mud waiting around the corner, they have to hope their car can take it. An excellent handing car with sophisticated traction control and stability management (like the Mitsubishi Evo) shouldn't have too much trouble, while more conventional cars can risk a crash. Of course a compete idiot can still screw up with an Evo.

MotorTrend already tested this car -- yes beat a C6Z06 around a track (because of the tranny) and was quicker but not faster. The trap on the GT-R 2012 was only 122.7. Which is realistic .... the old ones trap at around 118 and the new one has 45 more horses. The ZR1 trap is 128-129 and so is the 911 Turbo S and the 458/G.Lambo. The Z06 trap 123.5ish (on the same day as the GT-R and same driver). Do not do roll-on in your new GT-R without upgrades if you see the above. THEY WILL SMOKE YOU.

@scrfce123 Of course how "involving" the car can be can affect how well the driver will do in an all-out race (eg how much "brain power" can the driver put into Race Situational Awareness given how much of it he would have to devote to just keeping the car under control). Just like the difference between a traditional mechanically controlled fighter plane and one with Fly-By-Wire - which one would give the pilot a higher chance of success and survival in combat?

The 2012 GT-R (updated car) beats the living shit out of the ZR1 AND LF-A for cheaper. But its a trade off, there is NO import vs domestic fanboy bullshit here, just companies building their own thing. ZR1- 3.4 0-60 mph 2012 GT-R- 3.0 0-60 mph LF-A- 3.7 0-60 mph ZR1- 11.7 1/4 mile 2012 GT-R- 11.1 1/4 mile LF-A- 11.8 1/4 mile ZR1- $110,000-$120,000 2012 GT-R- $80,000-$90,000 LF-A- $370,000+
