A good alternative is valve oil for brass instruments. It's one of the lightest oils I've found, doesn't separate and never goes 'sticky'.
@MaturePatriot6 жыл бұрын
Valve oil. Has to be light and non sticky.

Bias spring, or anti backlash spring. Needs a slight bias when the movement is at the one end of travel, so it just keeps the gearing backlash free, but not so much that at the other end it is over wound. The oil is just there to make a thin film in the bush by capillary action, no need to have any more than that volume in the oil well. The oil just has to be non gumming with time, so generally it is a very light pure mineral oil with almost no additives to it. Basically just enough oil to make a slight blue to orange interference pattern around the bush is fine, showing it is a very thin ( nanometers thick) film there, and it will be perfect. It will flow into the bush pores and provide decades of lubrication. If you take it apart use fine crocus paper to polish the shaft ends, both removes the old oil and gets the shaft nicely polished.

Have you looked at any Mahr millimess (1um) dtis Bob? . I have a couple ,one of which I had to 'clean' due to corrosion , it could probably do with a makeover. Fancy a go at it? Would make a neat video as they are quite different to the typical plunger type.

You can get Starrett instrument oil from ebay or Amazon

@@gordonp6353 Thanks for taking the time to answer but... I know you can get Starrett oil on eBay & Amazon but it is quite expensive for a small amount, I was more interested to see what Bob used, perhaps a cheaper alternative? Paul

Paul Floyd; In the Mitutoyo service info they say to use chronometer oil , I use Porpoise jaw brand available from ebay in smaller amounts.

Bob, why are you shy about mentioning brand names like 3 in 1 oil?
@bobdixon60606 жыл бұрын
hi well I try not to name the brands as its free ad for them
@briancollison53194 жыл бұрын
I was once told that 3 in 1 is a thick oil with a solvent mixed to make it thin. As the solvent dries out over time the oil goes sticky.
