John, if you just use the straight drilling section of a centre drill to start a hole, they are a fully valid way to start holes and arguably better than a spot drill because the centre drill is more rigid. Drilling too deep with them is the problem and all the drilling angles get pissed.

G'day John. Not a bad looking wrench considering it's age, should clean very nicely. The centre drill certainly do come in handy for a truer drill experience. The Jobber drills are better suited for mill or general flat drilling, which makes life a bit easier. Good Video overall. Ted

Come on John, those are stub drills, not spotting drills, never drill the spot drill deeper than its cone face, only needed to give the bigger drill a centre to start from. Years ago I worked with a plater who could spot dab a start for one inch holes in boiler plate, the punch was an inch in dia. and smacked with a 5 pound hammer from above head hight, a true craftsman. The cente pop was about a 1/4" accross.

Interesting that John didn't show the larger drill entering the hole he made with the spotting drill. Agreed, never drill beyond the cone of a spotting drill, to do so nullifies the reason for using a spotting drill. The angle of a spotting drill is 120 degrees for a 118 degree drill so it centres the drill in the intended place. It stops the drill from chattering around the edge of a starter hole and is far more accurate. The chattering can chip the drill edge in some cases if drilling hard material.

Same applies if using a centre drill for spotting. So many people go to the 60° section; you only need to go in a small amount, on the initial cone of the centre drill.

When drilling with a centre drill if you set the nearest drill flute to you horizontal and push the drill away from you with a piece of wood then as you enter the work the centre drill will be pulled towards you as it aligns with the stock centre. This helps compensate for any play in the tailstock ram.

Interesting video thank you , in Australia these wrenches were called “ a Footprint “ an awfully long time ago , was that the manufacturer or just a tradesman’s label of said wrench ?
