I'm hoping this nice Dual turntable is in good shape and can be restored to full operation without too much effort. First, I have to diagnose it's troubles then decide on a repair approach.

I'm getting the next video ready. Curiosity has forced me to have another look at the cartridge.

A customer just gave me one of these(Dual 1214 Noresco) with all the parts including 3 different pins. 2 short ones and a long shaft for multi records as well as a Marantz 1030 and 2 Dynaco A-25s that work well. All in great shape they just need to be cleaned and the Marantz needs some cleaning and lubing. The turntable however needs a little more work...Hello from Northern Ontario Canada! I`m hoping to learn how to fix the Dual from watching your videos. Thanks for posting!

Actually the lid fits underneath. I used the dual for about 10 years. It works fine. 😎

they don't make them like they used to.. what a difference, now is just a tiny circuit board and even that's done wrong lol look at all those moving parts and gears, so cool..

I've seen players from the 30's that not only play a stack of records but will automatically flip them over and play the other sides.

I prefare the MARANTZ TT143 Linear Tracking Turntable with the tonearm assembly mounted into the lid of the turntable which means that the lid has to be down to play a record and you know what it plays records the way they were cut on the record cutting lathe, shame it isn't a T4P.

Hi Jim, You can check the cartridge by measuring the DC resistance across the left and right coils. The Shure M75 should measure about 630 ohms in each channel if it's good. If it measures okay, you may have a bad stylus. ...Ed

Wow, great find on those parts! Just out of curiosity do you know what causes cartridges to fail so often? Is it likes capacitors that get moisture in them?
@JimsRadioShop7 жыл бұрын
Crystal cartridges can have short lives due to moisture and unstable chemistry. But I don't think most magnetic cartridges are doomed to 'early' failure - quite the opposite in fact.
@marktubeie077 жыл бұрын
JIm, just checking the obvious that as it's a magnetic cartridge it's going through a pre-amp (or phono input on the amp if it has a built in pre-amo)?
@JimsRadioShop7 жыл бұрын
My shop stereo has a built in pre-amp. It should be fine.

I have one. I'm wondering how do I clear the plexiglass cover??

Just as a hint: "Nordmende" is spoken with a short "e" as ending, like the "e" of "end" (as first letter). You may speak it as "Nord-Mendend" and then cut the last trailing "nd" ;-)

Here is How NOT to take apart a Dual 1214, follow the correct prceedure as outlined in the manual it comes apart without any problems, this is almost painful to watch, skipping ahead to repair goodies!!
@JimsRadioShop7 жыл бұрын
It only gets more painful.

Yes but the whole series is informational and frustrating but working with old electronics is that way most of the time.

I got one like this its actually a HP-810 with a dual 1211 turntable on it, and it just dosent spin and I don't know what the problem quite is

The motor doesn't start until you move the arm over the platter. It has auto on/off.

I would bet the farm that if you took a pair of pliers and turned the start lever it would start up and work perfect. The cam has to cycle to open the mute switch. Wow such a waste of time.

Wow this is painful. Maybe get a general idea of how the dual turntable works. It’s a mute switch. Painful but I watched the whole damn thing.
@lucasbretels5 жыл бұрын
He had to measure te resistance of the cell contacts. Ant the mute switch has to be in free position.

I take pleasure in repairing amplifiers but consider turntables and tape decks a PITA.

Not very subtile in handling. Even the german tank likes to be handled with care….
