Shapton's Glass series sharpening stones are widely considered some of the best on the market. But how does the 8K they work in a dual grit edge?

What's a dual grit edge, you may ask?
Think: high performance aggressive knife edge!!! This method for versatile razor sharp knives is fast, easy, and leads to edge retention increases of up to 50% in some tasks! Watch my tutorials to quickly learn innovative hand sharpening techniques with whetstone, diamond plate, & honing strop.
The dual grit method is a specific method for sharpening one side of the edge coarse and the other fine - an updated tutorial is below:
• CPM MagnaCut Dual Grit...
And the results have been observed by independent testing:
• You Won't Believe How ...

One interpretation of the magnified views, apparent wire edge, and your observations about hard vs soft stones: During fine grit polishing, the dual-grit extension sometimes doesn't have enough rigidity to stay in firm contact with the stone (due to sideways flex). On softer stones, this is perhaps somewhat mitigated by the cushioning/local concavity of the stone.

I have thought a similar thought, but would never have been able to put it that eloquently. Thanks for this description, it is pleasing food for thought. I think my guess agrees with your hypothesis.

Even though I have been trying to discover the secret of sharpness for years, I have discovered that I am still a long way from mastering the craft. I cannot sharpen scissors, axes, convex or dual grit, my specialty lies in getting decent kitchen knives super sharp. I am now working on a convex edge to see if I can get a suitable edge angle on it. Life is one big experiment.

Yeah - to be honest I am a long way from feeling like I know "the secret" but yeah life is fun when you tinker and observe, and there is a satisfaction to specializing in something and being able to benefit people with it!

Love these tests and the whole dual grit method and results are fascinating. I haven't done any actual testing of my attempts per se but I have pulled longer life out of the edge on a MagnaCut blade. I wonder how a dual grit finish would be actualized by a large production manufacturer. It would be very interesting to see Spyderco or Benchmade or Hogue make an attempt.

Yeah, Sal from Spyderco has sent me a set of 6 test blades to tinker with. He'd like to have them sent back dual grit sharpened and compare the Catra results from them to his normal sharpening protocol, so we'll see. I hope I can help Spyderco, but I have my misgivings about how scalable and consistent it would be if you moved from gentle hand sharpening to faster (but more forceful) mechanized sharpening. Also, while people would absolutely notice a 50% increase in edge retention on that factory edge, I'm not sure big companies would want to invest a bunch of time and capital into something that is not permanent (IE once it's re-sharpened the first time, the benefit is gone). Time will tell. But I appreciate your interest heaps!

@homeslicesharpening very good point on a mass producer possibly not finding enough benefit in putting the effort in for temporary results, especially if mass production doesn't lend itself to the same results we're getting. I suppose it wouldn't make much economic sense. It's really cool that Sal was interested enough to reach out.

Very interesting. I would love to experiment more but my eyes are holding me back. I really need to invest in some way to magnify my work.

Yeah man, compared to some, my microscope is pretty primitive but it has been a huge help!!!

That would be fun! Either way I think it will be gratifying to answer my own questions and take along a few other nerds for the ride 😆 Thanks! Have a good day!
