I suspect you’ve already figured it out, but, if you haven’t, here’s an advanced soap calculator for liquid soap: www.lyecalc.com For dual lye, I use 30% of sodium hydroxide for the lye amount and 70% of the potassium hydroxide. I had a batch of liquid soap fail. I came across this video. Added some sodium hydroxide and from there I was able to add a little oil to bring down the ph but saved my batch! Love this idea.

Hi, Mila--thank you for watching the video and for your question. I'm glad you liked it. Yes, you can do this using the hot process method. As for adding essential oils--some essential oils cause cloudiness, others don't. (Always keep your superfat at 0% for liquid soap.) If your soap turns cloudy, maybe dissolve a few grains of potassium hydroxide in a tablespoon of distilled water and mix it into 8 ounces of the soap. Leave it overnight and see if there's a difference. (Keep an eye on the pH level of your soap before and after.) If it's still cloudy, but less so, I would do the same thing again (always checking your pH--should be about 8-10.) Let me know how it works out for you. Thanks, again, for watching.

I apologize for taking my time with getting back to you, things happened that pushed my plans for soap making back by a week or so and I just got to it today. Using hot process, it was done within a half an hour or so! Super thick, with beautiful clarity test and a Ph of 9. It was so easy to make! I'm in the process of diluting it and as of right now it's 1:1 and it's still got some time to go before all lumps are dissolved, I'llleave it in warm slow cooker overnight. May I ask what salt and sugar are for? I left them out, but was wondering what they're for. And last question, how much do you end up diluting this particular soap? I cannot thank you enough for this video, following your directions was super easy and everything is going great so far, thank you!

Hi, Sandra--thank you for watching and for your question. Adding salt (not too much) helps to thicken the soap. Sodium hydroxide is to make soap bars and potassium hydroxide is to make liquid soap. I use both lyes to make liquid soap--30% sodium hydroxide and 70% potassium hydroxide, but you can just use potassium hydroxide to make liquid soap. I hope this helps. Hi, I’m so glad you liked the video. Thank you for watching it. Yes, you can make the liquid soap without Turkey Red Castor Oil. It can add moisturizing qualities, but some people are sensitive to sulfated products. I store my paste in a covered strong plastic container in a cool, dry place. As for adding essential oils, add that at the end in the diluted soap. Consider testing a little bit of the essential oil in maybe 8 ounces of diluted soap to see how it reacts to the essential oil. Some oils cause cloudiness, while others don’t. I need to add this to the instructions: you need to add a preservative like Liquid Germall Plus. Thanks, again, for watching and inquiry. @@ctkenyon56 the soap turned out great! It is clear and yellow. I just used it on my hair, body and face. It was smooth and lathered up just like the Castile soap I usually buy. My skin and hair are soft. I’m very happy with it, and like it better than the one from the store. After doing the math, I’m wondering if there’s much of a cost savings, though. Thanks for watching the video. You'll love how easy this method is. As for diluting--I take some of the paste and dilute it 1:1 (one part paste to one part distilled water). I leave it overnight. The next morning, I pour off the liquid and add water to any diluted paste left behind (1:1 again) and keep doing it that way. I like viscous soap, not watery. I hope that helps. Hi, thank you for watching. For the lye amounts, you don't double it. You need to run your recipe through a soap calculator. You then multiply the lye amount by 70% to figure out the potassium hydroxide amount and 30% for the sodium hydroxide. Here's the soap calculator I recommend: sbmcrafters.com/content/advanced-calculator-solid-liquid-or-cream-soaps Here's an example of a recipe I have: 10 oz. Olive oil 3.6 oz. sunflower oil 5 oz. coconut oil 1.4 oz. castor oil .4 oz. sulfated castor oil 4.1 oz. Potassium Hydroxide 8.5 oz. distilled water 4 oz. glycerine Add preservative at suggested rate when you dilute the paste. This recipe calls for 4.1 oz. of potassium hydroxide, but I want to use sodium hydroxide in this recipe, too. I take the total amount of lye and multiply it by 70% to find how much potassium hydroxide to use: 4.1 x .7 = 2.87 oz. of potassium hydroxide. I do the same for the sodium hydroxide: 4.1 x .3 = 1.23 oz. sodium hydroxide. You add the two together (2.87 + 1.23) and you get 4.1. I haven't tested this recipe with both lyes--I just used it to show you how you figure out the lye amounts. Let me know if you have any other questions.

so wonderful to come across your channel.I am very new to soap making and have made a few bar soaps that turned out well.Earlier this week I tried making a hot process liquid soap from another tube member and it was a nightmare...my stick blender broke after not much use as well as a VOLCANO that made a serious mess .To actually come across a recipe that was cold processed warmed my heart...I made this late last night and was amazed at the ease production as well as your very detailed directions...the PH was perfection ... Hi, thank you for watching. The sugar adds bubbles, the salt can thicken it and glycerin makes it more moisturizing. The other day I made soap that took me less than an hour with setting up, making it and cleaning up. Then, I left it overnight and it was ready the following morning.

I make cold process hard soap all the time, using various hard and soft oils and started researching liquid soap making and found that most people seem to stick to a few select liquid oils and maybe coconut oil. I also see some people do litmus tests and add fragrances at different stages. In this process, when do you or would you add fragrances (essential oils)? How do you know in your process the soap is cured and ready to use? And do you have to worry about certain essential oils reacting badly if added? Sorry for many questions but your the first person to respond to me and I’m eager to know lol!! I love your work and soap making!

@@younghot29 I add the EO/FO at the very end. Some can cause cloudiness, which may or may not disappear, so it’s good to test a small batch and leave it for a few days to see how it reacts. The soap is ready to use when it passes a clarity test or when the pH is 7-9. (You need to use a pH meter for this.) If your soap remains cloudy, it might be some unsaponified oils. Make sure you set the SF at zero and don’t add additional oils/butters at the end other than Turkey Red Castor oil (water soluble). I hope that answers your questions. @@ctkenyon56 ok so I made the soap but it came out cloudy and has a ph of 10ish. I blended it for 7mins but didn’t start back due to it being late at night and so the mixture just sat overnight. Is there anyway I can fix it without adding an acid to it to lower the ph or should I just start all over? I see some recipes said to add Citric acid or borax but I don’t want to if I don’t have to. Also if I were to get citric acid, when in the process do you add it?

Thank you for watching. Good question. I don't know of any other oil that will superfat liquid soap without making the soap cloudy (from unsaponified oils). It's optional, so just leave it out. I looked for a substitute for Turkey Red and came across Polysorbate 80, which isn't a superfat substitute, but is good to use when adding color to the liquid. You probably already know about that, though. Let me know how your soap turns out. :)

@@ctkenyon56 I did a 3.5 to 1 ratio. I also uploaded the video for it too. It is just a tad milky today. I think the sodium hydroxide part of it is the culprit. I can see typical strings forming. Usually pure Koh for 100% coconut oil is very clear. It might be better with a more olive rich recipe. All in all still performs really well and an excellent lather. I cleaned with it today 👌 was a good new thing to try. Thanks for the idea 😊

Thank you for your recipe, just right to the point, very easy to make, I made it but I didn't have turkey red castor oil, (I am to impatient to wait for the product to arrive,) it came out perfect and I couldn't follow all the process, I blended till it turn like pudding,I covered it and went to sleep,12hrs later it was hard,so I did the clarity test and it was clear, I can't believe how easy it is, now I have a question, after dilution, what can I use to make it more thick? I have tried Coco glucoside but it lost the cleaning and foaming power,I had tried salt and the same happen, any ideas? And thank you again 😘

Wow-great success! As for thickness-you can dilute it with less water. If that doesn’t work, add crothix pastille. Follow the manufacture’s recommendations for the usage rate. I had forgotten that I have xanthan gum and it works, I use this soap to wash dishes and it cleans really well, it's like down with out the chemicals and gelly like and cause is thin I use to much. Hi, thank you for watching. Yes, I added 2% Turkey Red Castor Oil when it became paste. I have added with the other oils in other batches and it turned out fine. And, yes, this is a super fat. You can, but the pH may be too high if you have sensitive skin. Ideal pH for our face is about 5 or 6. Liquid soap usually has a pH of about 9. I use it on my face without any problem--it's not drying or irritating, so it works for me. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks, again.

Did you add the Turkey red castor oil to this batch ? I just made this using you recipe and added turkey red castor oil during dilution. I went ahead and used my crock pot to speed it up and only used equal weight of distilled water. It has a nice reddish tint. Going to sequester it for a few a few days before use.

I started the dilution with 2 parts paste to one part water and slowly added more water. As for the preservative-exactly as you said: I added it when I diluted the paste-0.5% preservative. (Check your preservative for the suggested percentage.) As for the EO/FO-I would test it on a small amount of the soap as some may make the soap cloudy. I hope that helps. Thank you for watching! :)

When I put the recipe through the soap calculator, I put 0% for the superfat. Then, at the end, I added 2% Turkey Red Castor Oil (a water soluble oil) to superfat the soap; it makes it milder. I don't recommend using this to wash your hair. Some people do, but the pH is too high for hair. As for the dilution rate--to start off, I do a 1:1 ratio of paste to distilled water and go from there. If it's too thick, I add a little more water at a time until I get the desired consistency. As for adding anything for conditioning--making a soap with a higher percentage of olive oil, apricot kernel oil, or avocado oil (no more than 50% total) will make a more conditioning soap. While this makes a conditioning soap, I don't recommend using this for hair.

esraa hussien Thank you for watching the video, Esraa. I add the preservative when I dilute the paste, which is within a week of making it. I would add a preservative to the paste and then, when you dilute it, add the preservative you need for the water-don’t include the weight of the paste since you’ve already added a preservative for it. Namita Deo Hi, thank you for watching the video. I apologize for my delayed response. I add Liquid Germall Plus at 0.5% for the preservative once the soap is diluted. As for how much glycerine-I add about 17% of the oils. So, for this recipe of 30 oz of oil, I added 5 ounces of glycerine. (30 oz of oil x 17%= 5.1 oz.) Thanks, again for watching. Yes, you can. Just run it through a soap calculator first. The two lyes make a thicker liquid soap.

Hi, thank you for watching. The pH of liquid soap is too high to use as shampoo. There are people who use it as shampoo, but I don't recommend that. The proper pH for hair products should be about 4.5; liquid soap's pH can't go lower than 7 and if you try to make it go lower, the oils will separate and it won't be usable. The pH for this shower gel is between 7 and 8. I hope that helps. Thanks, again for watching.

HI, Shanthi, I don't recommend using this for hair as the pH is too high. For dilution, I start with 8 ounces of paste that I dilute with 8 ounces of distilled water and go from there: if it's too thin, I add more paste; more water if it's too thick. Before adding more water, separate the lumps from the liquid soap and see how it is. Allow time for the paste to dissolve in the water. I hope that helps.

Hi, Thank you for watching. The color of the soap is affected by the color of the oils, so choose light colored oils. Coconut oil is light colored, but a high percentage of it would make a drying soap. Cocoa butter is also light. You’d have to experiment-I suggest doing that with small batches to avoid expensive mistakes. I hope you find the right combination of oils. Thanks, again, for watching.

Yes, you could. If you have really sensitive skin, the pH may be too high, but most people use it fine as a face wash.

I’m so glad it worked! Yay! As for it being too drying- did you add glycerine? I know you said you were going to use your recipe, so I’m wondering if you included glycerine. While glycerine will make your soap more moisturizing, too much of it can kill the bubbles, so you have to be careful.

Thanks you for sharing your amazing recipe. I've make this liquid soap for the last 2 years - 6 batches in total. Today I doubled up the recipe to just under 3 kg (6.5 lbs) total batch. My recipe uses 52% High Oleic Sunflower Oil which smells amazing and does not go rancid as quickly as olive oil which I used in my first batch. Thank you, thank you ...... God bless.
