Thanks for doing this video and making the process appear so simple! I have to say, you scared me with the size of your bowls, lol. I was sure something was going to go over, but it is better for a video. The other thickener you mentioned was HPMC (Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose). HEC is Hydroxyethylcellulose for the curious. I am intrigued to give this method a try. If you don't mind a suggestion, continue adding honey with the lye water. Added at the end, it could become a microbial problem.

Or?? One could always add their FO to the 1/1 ratio and if it thinned out you'd know exactly how much water to add to your desired thickness. And also, I would make the lye water and let it cool off and then add the honey, cause this is, like you said, burning. Over all this is a very nice video ma'am, thanks so much.

AWWWW. I've been working on the same batch of HPLS for 3 days now. When I stir it after the dilution phase some of it reforms into clumps. Any ideas as to what I should do, it is mostly liquid like honey, but does get clumps. Is that normal. Once I finish this batch I am going to make my first CPLS. I'm sure it will be easier.
@ctkenyon566 жыл бұрын
Jan Garcia Hi, Jan-I would remove the clumps and bottle the smooth part. Then add a little distilled water to the clumps and do the same thing-strain out the smooth part and keep adding water until the clumps are gone. Wait overnight before straining out the clumps-to give time for it to dissolve. You’ll find that CPLS is much easier. I hope that helps.

Thank you for the video! 2 questions 1) What do you recommend for the preservative once diluted? I'm planing to make a very similar soap to yours and one with avocado oil to compare the feel of them. 2) if I wanted more of a body wash type on the thicker side is this possible to do with less water or would the Ph be off from not enough dilution?
@ctkenyon566 жыл бұрын
Poet DeHart Hi-thank you for watching. Good questions. 1) For a preservative, it’s recommended that you use Phenonip or Liquid Germall Plus. 2) For a thicker soap, dilute the paste with less water. You can also thicken the soap with a salt solution (1 part table salt dissolved in three parts warm distilled water). Add 1 ml of the salt solution to the diluted soap at a time and mix well. Let it sit a while and then test the thickness. Keep adding the salt solution (1 ml at a time) until you reach the desired thickness. It shouldn’t affect the pH much. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks, again. 😊

I have had the NAOH & KOH withe.doe some time and I've been scared of taking that first step. Thanks to you, I took that step yesterday and made my very first liquid soap. I didn't add honey, my liquid was just distilled water. My oils were 150ml of rosehip oil and 50ml of coconut oil. My KOH was 39gm .I guess it went well but it looked whitish in the vaseline stage. I added some distilled water to dissolve it into liquid and it's still whitish. Could it be because of the oils I used?
@ctkenyon563 жыл бұрын
Hi, Sorry for my delayed response. I didn’t see it until today. Thank you for watching the video. Did you run your recipe through a soap calculator? I didn’t check to see if the KOH was the right amount. This is the one I recommend: www.sbmcrafters.com/content/advanced-calculator-solid-liquid-or-cream-soaps I just plugged in your numbers in ounces (1.77 oz coconut oil, 5.3 oz rose hip oil) and it shows that you should add 1.55 oz potassium hydroxide while you added 1.38 oz, so it’s cloudy because you didn’t add enough lye. Add another 4.8 grams of potassium hydroxide; that should clear it up. You should run any soap recipe through a soap calculator- even those you find online to make sure it’s right. Liquid soap must be made with exact amounts of oils and lyes. I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes. Thanks, again, for watching.

Thank you for your video! I was interested if anyone could explain the difference between cold process and hot process liquid soap making, besides the obvious of one being made “cold” and the other cooked. Is it just a matter of convenience? Is everything else pretty much the same, as far as lye amounts, etc.? Then, what steps would then be taken when the clarity of the diluted soap is cloudy? Thank you.
@ctkenyon567 жыл бұрын
Pamela Schlegel With hot process, you heat the soap throughout the process until the Vaseline stage, which means you have to keep constant watch over it. Cold process, on the other hand, is just that-you never heat it up, but let the saponifying happen on its own. I left the soap overnight in the bowl and it was gelled by the next morning. I hope this answers your question. And, thank you for watching! :)

So how did you get it to clear up? I made some yesterday and it didn't go to gel stage overnight. What can I do to fix it?
@ctkenyon564 жыл бұрын
Hi, Cindy--Liquid soap has a mind of its own, I think. But, really--it should have reached the gel stage overnight. Did you stick blend it for about 7 minutes? And, did you use the recipe I posted? If your answer is "yes" to both of these, I'd stick blend it for about 5 minutes every 30 minutes--do that a few times and see if that does anything. If you want it to go faster, after stick blending it, put it in a crockpot on low and stick blend it every 15 minutes or so. Make sure your crockpot can hold the liquid soap and has enough space in case the soap volcanoes. If you don't have a crockpot, put the soap in a stainless steel container (again, a big enough container) and put it in your oven on low, or with just the oven light on. Heating it up will speed up the saponification process. With any heating method, you have to stay close by to monitor it. Liquid soap can go from 0 to 60 in a short length of time. Please let me know how it's going.

This method is so much easier than the hot process method, wish I had already seen this video. I have a question I'm hoping you can help out with. I made some hot process liquid soap using Tina's recipe. I cooked for 6 hrs and the paste wasn't translucent so I left it overnight and cooked it the following day for a few more hours. The paste was translucent then, I did the mug test and that was clear. Did a PH test and it was about a 9. I diluted a small amount of paste and allowed to sit overnight. When I checked the solution the next day it was cloudy. Why do you think that is? Do you think it will clear up in a few days? Made a big batch and I'm really hoping it does.
@ctkenyon564 жыл бұрын
The only thing I can think of is that it got cold (that can cause liquid soap to cloud up), or that you didn't use distilled water to dilute it, which is probably not the case for you. I guess you didn't add a fragrance/essential oil when you diluted it? If you did, that can also cause cloudiness. I hope that helps.

@@ctkenyon56 thank you for taking the time to respond. I did not add any fragrance to the batch but I I did not dilute with distilled water. Hi, thank you for watching, I'm sorry for not responding sooner. What Jordan said is true: sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) is used to make soap bars while potassium hydroxide (caustic potash) is used to make liquid soap. The two are not interchangeable. As for adding honey or glycerin---neither is necessary to make liquid soap, but I recommend adding glycerin (not too much because too much decreases the bubbles) to make the soap milder and more conditioning. I hope that helps.

Debbie Bowman Hi, Debbie, Thank you for watching. Leave your soap paste out covered for a couple of days, then test it again. My first batch was clear right away; my next two were cloudy. The first of the two cleared up a couple of days later while the second one took much longer. I think I must have mis-measured something. Here’s an excerpt from a post by lovinsoap.com about cloudy soap: “To buffer using a borax solution - Even though I do a 8% lye excess instead of Failor’s 10%, I follow Failor’s recommendations for using borax. I make a 33% solution of borax/water and add 3/4 oz per pound of paste to my diluted soap. So I’ll boil 9 oz of water and add 3 oz of borax. You have to boil it while dissolving…it’s a sucker to get dissolved at times. It will turn to clear when ready. Since we ended up with 55 ounces of paste I’m going to add about 2.5 ounces (by weight) of this solution. Test your PH. If you want to drop it a bit more, you can add another .25-.5 ounce of the solution. If you add too much your soap will cloud up a bit. Now you can add your superfat ingredients.” One way to super fat your liquid soap without making it cloudy is to add Turkey Red castor oil, a water-soluble oil. Please let me know if your soap has cleared up with time, or if you had to add a borax solution. I hope this helps. ❤️

@ctkenyon562 ай бұрын
Hi, thank you for your inquiry. To determine how much lye to use, use a soap calculator and choose the option for liquid soap. It will tell you how much KOH (potassium hydroxide) to use. If you want to use both sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide, use 30% of the lye amount for sodium hydroxide and 70% of it for potassium hydroxide. So, if a recipe calls for 7.68 oz of KOH, multiply that by 30% to get the sodium hydroxide amount (7.68 x 30%= 2.30), the potassium amount will be 5.38 oz (7.68 x 70%=5.38 oz.). Here's a good liquid soap calculator to user: www.brambleberry.com/calculator?calcType=lye I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Can I make hard soap using potassium lye?
@ctkenyon566 жыл бұрын
Hi, Amira--thank you for watching the video. The importance of a clarity test is to ensure that the oils are fully saponified. If the soap doesn't pass the clarity test, then the paste should be cooked more, or left over night to fully saponify. If the soap is still cloudy, it can indicate that there's an excess of oils. Some people are fine with cloudy soap, but if you want clear soap, more potassium hydroxide (VERY little) can be added to saponify the oils. To check for excess lye, you can use a drop of Phenolphthalein on a bit of soap paste or do the "zap test." If there is excess lye, you can neutralize it with some citric acid. Also, (I've not tested this) I read that to superfat your soap without making it cloudy, you can add polysorbate 20 or turkey red oil (sulfated castor). (Both are water soluble.) I hope this answers your questions. Let me know if you have any others, or comments. Thanks, again!

Yaseen Motala Hi-Thank you for watching. To figure out amounts using percentages, you multiply the total amount of oils in your batch by the percentage. For example, for a 32 oz batch: 80% of olive oil, would be 32 x .8 (I.e., 80%) = 25.6 oz of olive oil. 5.7% castor oil: 32 x .057= 1.82 oz. castor oil 14.3% coconut oil: 32 x .143= 4.58 oz. coconut oil (The oil amounts should equal 32.) Then you run these amounts through a soap calculator to find out how much lye and water you need. If you want to know the amounts for a different sized batch, let me know your oil amount and I’ll give you the amount for each oil. I hope this helps. Thanks, again.

Rajkumari Mundra I don’t make liquid shampoo soap anymore because soap has a higher pH than our hair has. I now make a pH balanced shampoo bar and plan to do a tutorial of that. But, for what you asked for, I found a shampoo soap recipe that’s highly recommended (feltmagnet.com): 8 oz. canola oil 5.3 oz. coconut oil 1.1 oz. castor oil 0.8 oz. Mango Butter 0.8 oz. Sunflower oil 4 oz. glycerin 6 oz. Apple cider vinegar 3.9 oz. KOH When it reaches the Vaseline stage, add: 0.5 oz. Argan oil (or other oil for super fat) 1 Tablespoon liquid lecithin For the dilution, add 30 oz. distilled water. When it’s cool enough, add the preservative and fragrance oil. If you want to make the soap thicker, you can add 2-4 oz. of crothix pastilles or add a brine solution. (There’s a KZbin tutorial about how to add salt water to thicken liquid soap.) Please run the above recipe through a soap calculator to make sure the measurements are correct. As for the herbs: I wouldn’t boil the oils, but would do a water bath (a pot with the oils and herbs inside another pot of boiling water) to infuse the oils with the herbs. I would do about 1-2 tablespoons per pound of oil. (I would infuse it in one of the oils, not all of them. It will keep the measurements more accurate.) After you do the infusion, use cheesecloth to filter the oil. Weigh the oil again to make sure the oil amount is the same. Add more if it’s not. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks, again, for watching.

I am very curious about your soap. I am also a cold process soap lover. Mam, can you tell me after how long I can get gel like body of my cold process soap?
@ctkenyon564 жыл бұрын
Pranoy Sarkar Thank you for watching and for your question. The soap may gel within a few hours, but will take longer to “cure.” Once it looks like Vaseline, do a clarity test. If it’s clear, you’re good to go. If not, wait another day or so. Let me know if you have any other questions. 😊

@@pranoysarkar8748It sounds like all of the oils weren't saponified, which means you didn't add enough lye. When you run your recipe through a soap calculator, you should put 0% for the superfat. If you did that and there's oil still, it is probably because the weight measurements are off. I hope this helps.
