I really appreciate how you share the hard-core stuff with us. I'm looking into the HighPoint Technologies cards. They have a 4 and an 8 slot for M.2. They say they can be set to hardware RAID, but some drives can be carved out to be regular prime drives. The RAID drives have to be the same capacity drives, but the ones not for RAID can be various sizes, so I could have a use for a 500GB drive again.

Hi RivenrockGardens, Welcome! I'm honored! Keep it Simple and Make it Work! Good call! Highpoint can also be Bootable which means they have a Bios which means those cards are appending the Motherboard Bios! Wild stuff! Been a long time since We've had anything like that! Goes back to Promise VLB Multi I/O Cards! Yes! I have a tendency to think in JBOD terms about Drive Capacities and I should NOT! And what type of JBOD depends upon who is doing the talking! HighPoint is using Broadcom PLX Chips for the PCIe Lane multiplexing for both 4 and 8 M.2 NVMe PCIe Drive Cards! Fascinating technology! Which HighPoint card are You considering? Gigabyte is suppose to have one coming out. When, nothing announced since the Press Release! We did a Video about that card from Gigabyte for 8 Drives, already populated which is a Bummer before they even get started! We all like to Spec Our Own Drives for Speed and Capacity! There are cheaper controllers, but this one has a huge amount of data transfer and ability to work through the MoBo as you say. HighPoint Technologies SSD7540 PCIe 4.0 x16 8-Port M.2 NVMe RAID Controller It's overkill for me, I know. And not only is it so pricey, it'd cost a lot just to put a few drives in it. But I could go ahead and keep adding drives every year or so, and not have to go from a 2 drive, to four and then 8 and maybe end up spending more money. I don't think I need RAID though, these drives are so fast as they are. I'd use it just so I can have drives for the various foods I have in my garden, because I don't consider anything archive except published videos. If i plant a fig tree I might keep and use snippets of videos from it through the years. And I like the idea of a big past card like that. And I think from now on I'll stick with 980Pro even though 970Evo are a bit cheaper, and to my eyes seem just as fast, though the benchmarks 6,350 vs 3,500 don't lie. I have two machines, both 5950x on PCIe boards. So I kind of use them together for my art processing and my garden videos. This way I have enough SATA connectors and PCIe lanes. I am looking to put a threadripper together one day and have just one main computer. Mostly what it is, after 25 years of trying to save money by having 'just what I need' in computers, I decided to build a couple of computers that really work for me! I mean, 10 and 12 years PSU warranties, big giant BeQuiet and Fractal Torrent cases, I could put a ThreadRipper into the BeQuiet. This is why I like your channel, you show the equipment I think is cool!

Hi@@Rivenrock, I'm honored! Smart choices! We can relate! Even an X399, 2 Computers! Not so much with TRX40 HEDT. But that Platform is now history according to AMD! Bummer! @@BuildOrBuy Yep, I've been told by a few people now that the new Threadripper is likely to be something that would suit me well! I've got over 6TB of video and art I drag around to make videos. When I need to grab from my archive and drag a few hundred GB of video from my 2.5" SSD through SATA to my NVME I have to wait what (now) seems a long time as the data transfers. Once it's in the NVME everything's great. What is your perspective on a home/small business user having SAS drives? They are faster but heavily more expensive. But I like watching server channels and now many of them are moving their HDs and SSDs over to NVME drives. So used SAS drives might go down in prce and still be reliable as a second archive for remote storing for instance, and to replace the SSDs I have. But I'd want to use the little SAS to M.2 NVME adapter that fits into a 2.5" bay. That way every six months or so when I ned more space I could get a 2TB 980 Pro and take out the 970Evo and put that into the SAS connection for fast movement. I'd need an SAS control card. Right now it'd have to go into my second machine as I'm out of 16 slots in my main unit. I have 2.5 LAN between them. I have a thinking that with the data centers shedding millions of SAS SSDs over the next few years might make it a more accepted thing to use. And with the new Threadripper I could have my card with SAS plugs and also my existing card with SATA plugs AND the HighPoint controller. I have a feeling that this would be my last computer! LOL I really can't see me wanting or needing or even being able to use more! But I do have these two running 24/7 at 100% CPU for almost two years with one and almost a year with the other. There's nothing like having equipment so good the PSU fan never comes on (Titanium SeaSonic 850W). My old 4 core actually uses almost as much power from the wall at idle as one of these machines does. I've got filters, and actually put some finer screen inside of some of the stock ones. Then I took a 20" box fan and taped a box made form five 20x20x1" HEPA filters to it so that the fan blows filtered air to the corner of the room where the computers sit. This makes a high pressure area so almost all the air will be well filtered. I swear, I can let these machines run for months full speed fans at 70 or 80% (I use freefansync, a good app) and not take the panels off but the PSU and SSD's and other smooth dark surfaces show only the very finest layer of fine dust that can barely be seen. It costs more to have better equipment, yes it does. But when you can leave the machines running full speed and leave for the day and not have to worry about anything, it's a great thing. I push my CPUs hard. 100%, only reduced to restart weekly or two. Big BeQuiet coolers, right now CPU at 67C and ambient temps at 29C. These hardly EVER get over 75C, and when they do, it's because ambient temps are up around 35C. Rock-On Brother!

Hi@@Rivenrock, Definitely a candidate for a Threadripper Pro WRX80 Workstation! The question, which Motherboard best suits Your needs. SAS, yes, an option. A WRX80 will most likely have SAS. However, on 1 Computer, ok. What about Storage to another Computer. SATA is fast enough for Storage. And yes, for speed, NVMe, preferably M.2 over U.2. SAS Drives vs SATA Drives are not that much more expensive considering their Capacity and Capability. We like to Keep it Simple and Make it Work! Absolutely Rock-On! Now is a great time to get started on Your Build Specs! Quality over Quantity! Options!

You can manually modify older bioses for nvme boot. I've done it in an Intel 3rd gen asus board actually. Not the easiest thing to do and there's risk involved (and you certainly need to deal with losing features on the BIOS and settings not being properly named too...), but it's very possible and a great way to improve your old kit with an nvme boot drive that does up to pcie 3.0 x4 if you have 2 gen3 slots.

Hi cldpt, Welcome! Yes a Bios can be modded. Best source is BIOS-Mods. We do not advise that. Not for the faint of heart. We've had reports of Users bricking TRX40 Motherboards due to a Beta Bios gone bad. A reallocation of PCIe Resources. Gain something, lose something else. Like on an X79 Chipset. Based on Windows 11 compliance, definitely a diminished option. Thanks for Sharing!

How do the 4x pcie self bifurcated nvme adapters work? Do they just split 4 lanes into 2x2 lanes? Or does each drive have access to 4 lanes of bandwidth which is shared between the two drives?
@BuildOrBuy
@BuildOrBuy 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Anonymous .A, Great Question! The PLX Chip handles the Lane Switching for Upstream and Down Stream Ports. Each M.2 NVMe PCIe Device gets 4 Lanes of Bandwidth, Shared or Switched on the fly! A PLX Chip, Built on to a Motherboard provides more PCIe Slots. Whereas a PLX Chip on a Self Bifurcated PCIe Add in card provides more PCIe Lanes to the M.2 NVMe Drives on 1 PCIe Slot. Just a different allocation of PCIe Lanes or PCIe Ports. When We refer to the Lane Switching technology, We say PLX which is a brand which is now owned by Broadcom but reference the technology by the Brand name to keep it simple. That's why self Bifurcated PCIe add in cards are so expensive, that Broadcom PLX Chip! Other Brands are less expensive and have lower Performance capabilities. Chipsets Rule! Hope that helps! Ok, so this video came up on my search for USB 3 adapters. I'm shopping for one so I can allocate new drives as well as read data off of them. The M.2 keying is driving me crazy. I was looking for a USB3 adapter card that can read both B key and M key so I started shopping for a B+M adapter to USB3. Then the manufacturers warn that the adapter can't use NVMe protocol nor read M keyed SSDs... So why is the adapter B+M? I do realize there is SATA and AHCI methods but I just needed a universal M.2 SSD reader. A little help please.

X570 and Z590 only have one X16 PCIe socket. With a GPU in the top slot X16, great. With a gpu in the top slot and an NVMe card in the second slot, both go to 8X :( . AMD's quad cards are for TRX40 with two X16 slots or WRX80 with 7 X16 slots. AMD's quad Hyper GEN4 PCIe card will work with just two NVMe drives in an 8X slot. HighPoint has a GEN4 PCIe card with a PLX chip (I think that's what u call it). That will run 4 NVMe drives in an 8X slot. Lots of money. I dumped dual channel ram and only 24 cpu lanes with the first gen Ryzen and went to first gen Threadripper with 64 GEN3 cpu lanes and quad channel ram. That is an antique and 8 channel ram with 128 GEN4 cpu lanes has been available for a year. FIGHT THE BOTTLE NECKS

Hi@@maxhughes5687, All about PCIe Resource allocations! AMD's quad Hyper GEN4 PCIe card... We experienced load balancing issues on a 4 Drive Card with only 2 Drives. Your Results may vary. Yes, HighPoint uses a PLX Chip. Broadcom. An Enterprise solution for the Desktop. Think of those as hybrid cards. The Downside... Since they have a PLX Chip, that's the governor controlling the Speed, PCIe 3.0 or PCIe 4.0. The Upside, PLX Chip Lane Switching allows for 8 Drives to use 16 PCIe Lanes, 1 PCIe Slot instead of 32 PCIe Lanes. Absolutely! Identify the Bottlenecks! A chain is only as strong as the weakest link. To reiterate, all about Resource allocations! Chipsets Rule!

Hi David White, Supermicro. Just have not had time to do the Video with all the other Technology happening. Now more relevant than ever due to so many Viewers using X570 Chipset and not having enough PCIe Resources! Since We're on AMD with Our Testing, We would need to be on Intel to make use of Intel Optane for any Testing of that type to be meaningful. Our foray into Intel Optane was with the Sabrent USB-C Enclosure for a faster install of Windows using the Windows Media Creation tool. Intel Optane was exactly what We needed! @BuildOrBuy

Hi mipad553, Welcome! A multipurpose add in card or sorts. If there were, how would PCIe Lanes be allocated and / or Switched? PCIe Lanes are Split X4 or X8 from X16. PLX Chipsets handle Lane Switching back and forth or up and down for reference but only for like kind Devices specifically for M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD Drives. No Lane Switching of any other Devices. What are You hoping to accomplish? Consumer Desktop Motherboards do not have enough PCIe Lanes to go around. And Bifurcation or Forking or Splitting of CPU PCIe Lanes to reiterate is for M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD Drives only.

@@BuildOrBuy Yes, there will be issue for closing the back cover, but i've seen some videos where people cut a small hole on the cover to allow the cable to stick out. As for the drives, i'm actually intending to pair my NVMe SSD with an eGPU (ADT-Link R43SG), instead of a second drive. The main consideration for this setup is that adding this eGPU will take away the only single M.2 slot that i have in my laptop. So i'm thinking that by using this dual M.2 NVMe PCIe adapter, will it allow my laptop to detect both devices.

Hi Dennis Rotondi, Welcome! I'm honored! Checking You PDF Manual. MSI z270m Mortar: www.msi.com/Motherboard/Z270M-MORTAR/Specification - PCI_E1: PCIe 3.0 x16 - PCI_E4: PCIe 3.0 x4 Each M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD Drive requires 4 PCIe Lanes whether PCIe 3.0 or PCIe 4.0. That's why they are so fast! Beyond affecting the GPU, the greater question, will this work. You can only have 1 M.2 NVMe PCIe Drive on that Slot since there are only 4 PCIe Lanes available on that Slot. That Slot is x16 mechanically however, x4 electrically. No Dual M.2 Adapter possible! I know, bummer, right. I'm just the messenger! Hope that helps! Thanks for Asking!

Hi bluespirit, Welcome! Appreciate Your Comments You are not alone in asking that Question! Currently, PCIe Bios Bifurcation is not Supported on Your Configuration. Depends upon the Motherboard Bios. Easier to accomplish on a newer Motherboard. More difficult on an older Motherboard. Again, Tell Us Your Motherboard for Specifics. 3. Hi@@jollygreen4662, Typically the 1st M.2 is to the CPU whereas depending upon the Motherboard if only 2 M.2 NVMe PCIe Drives then the 2nd one will be through the Chipset. And that one through the Chipset may be PCIe 4.0 or may be PCIe 3.0. We have to check and verify the PCIe Resource allocations. When You're ready, lets talk Chipsets. That's the Foundation for Your Motherboard. And Chipsets Rule! Right now, think about how many CPU Cores You want. 10 Core, 16 Core, HEDT or Workstation, Etc. And name Your Task, Content Creation, Games, etc. Our Specialty is Computers for Content Creation! Then We can explore the Chipsets and from there see what We can determine about the M.2 Drives. For example... Some Motherboards have 4 M.2 Drives. 1st 2 will be to the CPU. The 2nd 2 will be through the Chipset. We have to verify. www.PCPartPicker.com is a good place to start using their System Builder. Not perfect but very informative. We're all about Answering Subscribers Questions! Hope that helps!

HI@@bikesandbeats4693, Absolutely! OK, change one thing changes everything. We only know PC Computers! On a PC, that's one Bios Setting to enable Bifurcation. The other Bios settings which are numerous are for RAID. There are 3 types of RAID. A Hybrid Bios RAID and a OS Software RAID. Both are software. The third is a Hardware RAID. Hardware RAID is a real RAID for Speed and Data integrity. A software RAID is a poor mans RAID. With a Software RAID We gain Capacity at the expense of Performance. Can You be specific on which Generation of MAC? From what I have read, a MACbook pro (PCIe 2.0) does not support Bifurcation. I do not know about the Apple M1. We can deduce PCIe 3.0 since they have Thunderbolt 4 and a 10 Core CPU, 32 Core GPU. Furthermore, I cannot find any real Specs. Only marketing Specs. Nothing about PCIe Lanes. www.apple.com/newsroom/2021/10/introducing-m1-pro-and-m1-max-the-most-powerful-chips-apple-has-ever-built/ And We have recommended AICs for MAC that were self Bifurcated. Hi Richard Taft, Welcome! Are You looking for a Single Drive Adapter? Your 2nd Slot is only X4 Lanes. You don't have any extra CPU PCIe Lanes for a Dual M.2 NVMe PCIe Adapter. That 2nd Slot is through Chipset PCIe Lanes and therefore cannot be Bifurcated even if there were X8 Lanes which it is not. Hope that helps!

@BuildOrBuy I should have said my second large slot. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I believe it's 16x. I would like either a dual or a quad adapter.

Hi Ultra Mega, Welcome! Was responding to Your 1st Comment when it disappeared. Are You asking about the Dual M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD Adapter? Requires X8 Slot, electrically. Does Your Bios support Bifurcation of X4+X4 on that Slot?

I have a {Aurus X570 Elite Wi-Fi} MB, I did Not think the Second Slot would Support these Adapter's, I went and Watched a Extensive one on my Board, and See My Second Slot can Do it, but it Shares the Slot, I just have to Figure out which one for my MB for Dual M.2NMe PDIE SSD Adapting. Any Suggestions? my MB is Rev 1.0

Hi@@ultramega8792, Ok. Explanation 1st! This is why We're doing Motherboard Overviews to Explain Slots and Storage for PCIe Resource allocations. Your Motherboard Gigabyte Aorus X570 Elite Wi-Fi www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/X570-AORUS-ELITE-WIFI-rev-1x/sp#sp You have the Following Resources: Slots: 1 - X16 to CPU 1 - X4 through Chipset 2 - X1 through Chipset In Your Motherboard PDF Manual, see: PCIeX16 Bifurcation Allows you to determine how the bandwidth of the PCIEX16 slot is divided. Options: Auto, PCIE 2x8, PCIE 1x8/2x4, PCIE 4x4. (Default: Auto) To install a Dual M.2 NVMe PCIe Dual Adapter requires X4+X4. And that's ONLY on the X16 Slot. Your other X16 Slot is X16, mechanically but NOT electrically! To reiterate, You Need X8, Bifurcated to X4+X4 and You don't have those PCIe Resources. Furthermore that 2nd Slot is through the Chipset. Only PCIe CPU Lanes can be Bifurcated but not Chipset PCIe Lanes. Your next option would be a Self Bifurcated AIC from Amfeltec. That will allow a X4 Slot to accommodate 2 M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD Drives since there's an on-board PLX Chip doing the Lane Switching. See: Amfeltec M.2 Carrier Boards. www.amfeltec.com/pci-express-carrier-boards-for-m-2-ssd-modules/ Amfeltec is in Canada. They make great Products. Pricey too! Hope that helps!
