Dual Motor Ariel Square Four 2000 CC 8 cylinders This Bike is a Monster

Introducing The ""Two By Four" Its a dual motor Ariel Square beast of a Motorcycle. it started out its life as 1956 and 1958 Ariel Square Four Cylinder engines with a custom build. This thing sounds like a Chevy 454!.No Harley sounds like this.. And it's kick start only! It's 2000CC and 8 Cylinders .it's kind of like a 1950's Boss Hog bike...
I met Ralph (The owner) at the Ariel Motorcycle Club O North America booth at the Hanford motorcycle swap meet He'll tell the story of who this great machine came into existence and we'll hear it run. Ralph also owns a sweet 1953 Vincent Black Shadow which we will also take a quick peek at.

Yes Ariel was a British motorcycle company the square 4 was their flagship motor a box shaped 4 cylinder 1000cc engine. Revolutionary design for the 50s. This bike has 2 of those motors.. it’s a custom. The bike directly to the left is a square 4 in stock condition.. really cool stuff.

Very interesting video. 40 years ago I had a Square 4 myself. As for the dual-motor "beast", surely there must be a severe problem with overheating, especially with the rear motor? I note another, normal Square 4 has an oil cooler. A great idea. Apparently, from the reflectors on the sides, for a (later) BSA/ Triumph 3.

Two sluggish overheating motors is no match for any single engined Japanese inline 4 over 600ccs. But I love the way it sounds

In defense of the square four, there wasn’t an engine like that during its more than 20 year existence, there wouldn’t be a Japanese 4 cylinder for 10 years after the square ceased production.. Evolution happens with motorcycles.. it was a fine engine for its time and can’t be compared with the more modern Japanese engines.. this bike is unique and a real beast… it’s kind of a motorcycle freak show. Amazing!

I liked the Vincent and the stock Ariel more... Edward Turner designed the beautifully smooth Square four engine also the Triumph twin a Brilliant engineer. Uncle Dick used to ride the Square four here in the UK in the fifties, Big bloke with huge handlebar moustache, mark IV goggles and leather flying jacket. ( Chuckle. )
