The Dubai Tram is one of the first trams without overhead wires in the world. The system, made my Alstom, uses a third electric rail in between the running rails.

This same type of tram (using rubber tires and powered guide rail embedded under the ground slit) has been operating at the Hilton Waikoloa Village complex since 1987. These cars are Swiss-made.

Speedbird1 FLY it wasn’t cheap though. I think it was about $50 for a 15 minute ride through the beach. I had to go to the ATM afterwards because I spent all the cash in my wallet! It was fun though!

So called third rail betw the running rails is a high tech power supply rail activates only when the tram passes over it. Otherwise it's safe to even step on. Dubai's tram is the only one to use such a power rail along public sections. Other trams use it only in terminals and maintenance areas. If nothing else, an answer to criticism of "unsightly! overhead! lines!!!"

Imagine if Boston used this tram design for next generation Green Line Rolling Stock. If I could dream the wheels would have articulation so that they don’t screech so damn much at Government Center or Boylston Stations!!!! And of course they can accommodate more passengers.

I loved in Boston for a year and I don't think I've ever heard trains (trolleys) screech as loudly anywhere else in the world! Its deafening! I've also wondered why streetcar and light rail systems in the US don't make 4 section trains instead of simply 2 section trains. If you are going to run them coupled together for most of the time, why not just make one longer train instead of coupling two shorter trains together?

It is downright harmful to everyone's hearing, and it is INEXCUSABLE that it has been allowed to continue. The sorry truth is that the U.S. is unwilling and/or unable to think through - not to mention, care about or take the necessary steps to correct - "unimportant" issues like trams screeching on curves. Public Transport in America is considered BENEATH the dignity and social standing of those who hold the reins of power and the keys to the public purse; these elites among us are chauffeured everywhere and/or given exclusive parking privileges, and wouldn't be caught DEAD anywhere near or on a public bus, subway or tram. So why should these superior folk give a damn if the lowly transit-riding masses in a city like Boston are forced to endure this kind of awful noise. The Powers-That-Be in charge of this mess couldn't care less, were they even to try. Anyone unfortunate enough to have to rely on public transport to get around a city in America is looked down upon with the same level of un-caring disdain as the "Untouchables" are in India (the Untouchables are India's Lowest Caste - people who, among other things, have the dubious task of scooping up the feces that people routinely and openly defecate in public places, because there are nowhere nearly enough public toilets in India to satisfy the need). Transit riders in America are looked down upon with that same degree of scorn - as lowly unfortunates and losers, undeserving of any respect or attention paid to their needs. The elite among us drive, or are chauffeured, so they never have to endure that kind of egregiously inexcusable noise. "Let them eat cake" is the motto of America's ruling class. If the contents of this video are to be trusted, it appears that the leaders in Dubai have an entirely different attitude toward THEIR concept of public transport.

Looks good. I saw it being built when I visited Dubai. It looks like the tram in Nice, France. That tram also doesn't have overhead wires, but only for part of its path. For that, I didn't see a third rail. I'm thinking there are batteries that get charged where there are overhead wires.

roachtoasties there are no overhead wires anywhere except for the maintenance and storage depot and the track leading up to it. The 3rd rail is in between the running rails. It is only electrified when the tram is on top of it so no one can electrocute themselves by touching it. I wouldn’t want to test it though. ;-)

cbvsjs from the 3rd rail in between the running rails. It is only electrified when the tram is on top of it. The technology comes from France.

Problem with tram in Dubai is that payment is not intuitive- you have to use nol card at station, not inside tram as I expected , so it was free ride, when I used it :-(

The third rail is under street level so you can’t physically step on it and the tram opened in 2014, you should know that because it was said at the start of the video

Binary Signals the 3rd rail is not alive when the train is not physically over it. Anyone can touch the 3rd rail and not get electrocuted. (I don’t feel comfortable testing this ;-). )

head hunter this is relatively new technology. The third rail (which is very visible in the video in the center of the running rails) is only live (powered) when the tram is physically on top of it. There is no risk of electrocution from people walking on and touching the 3rd rail.
