1991 now feels a long time ago. Back then, George H.W. Bush was US President, Mary Robinson was Ireland's President, Charles Haughey was Irish PM, the Birmingham Six were finally freed, the war in Northern Ireland was still on-going (no ceasefires), there was no internet, no DVD players, no TV3. Bryan Adams topped the UK & US singles chart with (𝐸𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐼 𝐷𝑜) 𝐼 𝐷𝑜 𝐼𝑡 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑌𝑜𝑢, U2 released the album Achtung Baby, Freddie Mercury passed away, and just a small percentage of Irish people had a mobile phone - the sole provider at the time was Eircell with the prefix of 088. The Dublin vs. Meath 4-match saga was excellent entertainment. The combined overall score covering the four matches was Meath 6-44, Dublin 3-52 - so so close! Back then, there was no back door / qualifiers route to the All-Ireland Final. If you lost a game, you were out until the following year's Championship games. Also, no red, yellow or black cards used by referees to issue to players, up to that time.

Magnificient ! so proud of those Royals ,they were MEN ,as were those Dubs!Only thought in anyones mind was to win ,no tactics ,no caution ,just fuckin win !!Only downside for me was the pathetic commentary by Micko ,gave no credit to that fantastic Meath team ,I suppose he wouldnt understand that it is not their duty to fuckin lie down like Cork....

That Meath team had 4 footballers of the year and the only moderm player on the team of the Millennium and the best full forward line ever only bettered by Egan listen Sheedy. Most great teams have one or 2 footballers of the year, but that Meath team had 4. Same number of Footballers of the year as kerry team 75 to 86 who had O Keefe J O Se Spillane Sheedy Footballers of the years players. That team had a record v Dublin which is unprecedented. In 9 championship games v Dublin in 6 years Meath lost once. They also drew and beat Dublin in national league div 1 final. Only third time ever leinster team beat Dubs in league final. They beat Dubs in 4 leinster senior Finals in 5 years. Put that into perspective Laois Westmeath have never beaten Dubs in leinster final. Kildare have done it once in last 90 years, beating Dubs in leinster final. And were managed by one of the greatest managers ever Sean Boylan. Here are four Meath footballers on that 1986 to 1991 team that won Footballer of the year: Robbie O Malley Martin O Connell Brian Stafford Colm O Rourke Meath 86 to 91 are the only team along with kerry team of 00s to have two defenders which won Footballer of the year. Robbie O Malley is the only ever corner back to win Footballer of the Year along with kerrys Marc O Se. That Meath had great rivalry with Corks greatest team ever, Meath had upperhand in the rivalry. Meath played Cork in 5 big matchs in Croke Park between 1987 and 1990 and Meath lost once. That Meath team 1987 88 now is considered by many one of the greatest teams ever. A team with 4 footballers of the year is sign of their greatness. And that team also had Martin O Connell who is considered greatest left half back ever when he was voted only modern player on the team of the millennium.

Exhaustion on Meaths part. Down wouldn’t have got near them otherwise😜😜😜😜😜😜

Majority of that Down team backed it up in 1994. 1990 National league final. Meath team at their peak only beat Down by 2 points. Meath didn't look exhausted in their semi final against Roscommon. Particularly in the closing stages when fatigue would show.
