1798 was the Uprising. Henry Joy McKracken was in the North, a Belfast born Presbyterian with Revolutionary sympathies. The French revolution of 1789 - 1799 sparked many to Revolution throughout Europe and America for the "Rights of downtrodden man," By 1765 Britain was the dominant Sea Power in the world and the British Empire arose. Many Ulster Protestants went to America and the US Bill of Rights of 1789 is based on the ideals shared by Wolf Tone and Henry Joy McKracken and the United Irishmen. They were great leaders and so was Michael Collins (assas. 22 Aug 1922) but they all ended up as martyrs not of Ireland but of their times. A great tune. As a Protestant Belfast man I have learned it as best I can ..and Ciarán Bourke's version is great. The devil always has the best tunes. PEACE

I wish politics wouldnt raise its ugly head every time an irish song comes up here. But, just for the record, the irish nationalists turned on their presbyterian countrymen and spoiled the rapport that had existed within the United Irishmen and drove them into the arms of the orangemen. just read that!! I could be wrong and i am sure in some eyes i will always be wrong!!. Long live ireland, a beautiful place and a beautiful people torn apart by religion and tribalism
