After the battle of the bogside, my granda ( from Derry who was part of Citizens defence association)got engaged in a argument with a fianna Gael councillor about the free state inaction about what was happening across in the border, he and others from Derry began to sing to the councillor, the councillor had them arrested for public intoxication (despite my granda being t-total)

As a real legend of the civil war said "it was to big of a price to pay" referring to the treaty signed by the Anglo irish and left the Irish of the 6 counties to slaughter and discrimination....very sad indeed ...Collins took British guns and used them on his fellow Irish man ....then the brits took him out ... Ireland unfree shall never be at peace
@Imyourhuckleberry01Ай бұрын
I agree with everything you say apart the fact that the Brits took Collins out, why would they, he was doing exactly as they wanted him to do, that would be just stupid.

The late Anne Byrne did a beautiful verrsion of this in the 60'd but Ronnie's version is beautiful also. The Dubliners were a great group. The only man standing now John Sheahan.

I WENT TO SEE , LUKE , In Dolly's of Mullhuďdart , A small personal concert for the H,Block Hunger Strikers, (Irish Heroes) Poor Luke was quite poorly at the time, But managed a few soul rendering ballads, Even when so ill ,He wanted to honour our IRISH REPUBLICAN PATRIOTS, NOW LUKE STANDS AMONG THEM ALL. THANK YOU LUKE , Gabriel 🇮🇪

Ciaran was such a good singer that one wonders why he wasn't used on vocals more. Perhaps Luke and Ronnie hogged the limelight, vocal-wise, during the heyday of this super-group. Jim McCann, sitting in front of this picture, wasn't bad either.

Visited Winterton-on-Sea to stop by Sam Larner’s house, who this song’s about, and the small collection of articles on him at the All Saints’ Church. A wonderful story of people’s labour on the British Isles. Larner’s house was recently turned into an AirBnB property and gutted of any sea faring qualities in the process, which tells its own story on how we’re using land and property today.

A powerful song of a bygone age of one of the most important industries in British history. Hard work, harsh conditions, unpredictable weather that could end you in seconds and a reliance on skill, experience, knowledge, handed down from countless generations and a captains intuition ...! try replicating that on a computer game...😏
