Rick Steves' Europe

Rick Steves' Europe

Watch the full episode: • Dubrovnik and Balkan S... Confined within its walls as it has been for centuries, Dubrovnik juts out from the rocky Croatian coastline looking inviting from both the land and the sea. Though the war killed tourism in the 1990s, today the crowds are most decidedly back. And understandably so - Dubrovnik is a living fairy tale that shouldn't be missed. I got married in dubrovnik last year and it was amazing. The year before we went to zadar and looking at holidays for this year I can't help but look to Croatia again. Such an amazing place that makes me feel at home.

Congratulations on your marriage!! I would like to be married in another country someday. Right now, a friend is trying to hook me up with a lady from Nepal, which would be the perfect wife for me because they are very spiritual. Maybe I'll get married in Nepal!

You know what...this is probably the most informative travel show. I've watched so many KZbinrs with their Travel Vlogs and these people are so annoying with their background music and showing off all the time . Rick Steves comes across as humble and pretty normal. Thank you.

It's especially touristic now, with all the GoT visits. It's mostly the summer period though. I went with new years eve and that was very managble. It's also on the border of Bosnia, with Mostar being relatively close by (146 km). Definetly worth checking out if you like these kind of places!

In Dubrovnik as part of IFOR (Implementation Force), US Army shortly after Dayton was signed in November of 1995. The city was damaged greatly with over 60 people killed by fire from Serbian (former JNA Navy) ships offshore. Returned in 1999 and lived in Dubrovnik during the air war in Kosovo in preparation for log movement into Kosovo..much like into Bosnia 12/85. Dubrovnik is my very favorite city. i was there in July of 13 and was astounded at the number of tourist ships in the harbor and thousands of tourist..with the flags and lunch bags. This was alittle disappointing. But, knowing the quiet spots meant escape from the tourists. A great city.the people endured just like the forefathers before them. RH

How could Rick fail to mention that Dubrovnik was named Ragusa (Respublica Ragusiana) in its heyday and, indeed, officially until 1918? To say otherwise is as anachronistic (one could argue, more) as saying that New York was established under that very name. Also, the statement on 2:01 "walls worked fine against the Turks" is incorrect. The Ottomans preferred to make peace with the Ragusians and leave the republic intact as the rival power to Venice on the condition that (1) Ragusa would never ally with any power against them; (2) duty-free trade for Ottoman merchants; (3) protection of Muslims who trade and settled in the city (including the to have a mosque within city limits which the Muslim community of Dubrovnik retains to this day).

serbia attacked croatia because it wanted part of it. it also wanted to settle more serbs on kosovo. it was 90% albanian. war on croatia wld displace some serbs who then wld settle the part of bosnia conquered by serbia & occupied kosovo. however, the West didn't want a greater serbia. yugoslav constitution allowed all republics to separate from yugoslavia. the part of bosnia from which serbs expelled ab 1 mn bosniaks [muslims] is still not a part of serbia & i think it never will be.
