This is one of, if not, the best Rick Steves presentation. I have watched this countless times. I even watch it during different times of the year.

Arthur Frommer just passed away, 95. We used his book when my parents took us all over Europe over 2 months in 1972. Europe on $5 a day. That’s just a cup of coffee in France these days. 😮

2024...Trump has been elected, using the same strategies as Hitler, by people with the same mindset as those of the Germans... Repetitive vilification of opponents, promising everything, simple solutions to very complex issues, and utilizing scapegoats....

The US has the Hill Billy version going on but cannot see it. They use the same rhetoric and hate the same kind of people. MAGA is our version of NAZI, even Holocaust survivors see it.

I est was asked why I considered Mr. Steves interpretation of the fasces ( and not Fascia as he said )was phoney, as he was right according to Wikipedia. This is the introduction on the subject according to Wikipedia:Fasces (/ˈfæsiːz/ FASS-eez, Latin: [ˈfaskeːs]; a plurale tantum, from the Latin word fascis, meaning 'bundle'; Italian: fascio littorio) is a bound bundle of wooden rods, often but not always including an axe (occasionally two axes) with its blade emerging. The fasces is an Italian symbol that had its origin in the Etruscan civilisation and was passed on to ancient Rome, where it symbolised a Roman king's power to punish his subjects,[1] and later, a magistrate's power and jurisdiction. The fasces was the object that embodied the power over life and death in the roman republic and in the phoney image of the republic that was maintained alive during the impartial period, a structure the US will soon be. And it is this totalitarian lecture of the fasces as an object and a symbol why it was chosen by Musolini. Mr. Steves huggy dovie interpretation might be mentioned from time to time, but this reinterpretation opens the way to read the fasces as a symbol of the unity of one people in the hand of one person, and thus opens the the way for an emperor or an imperial president who is the only vessel of power. The same superficiality with the sentence "Mussolini build a futuristic suburb called E.U.R." E.U.R is the accronyme for Esspositione Universale Roma, an expo planned for 1942 which never happened because of WW2. And it had a very clear urbanistic goal, i.e. link the city of Rome to the port of Ostia. Don't mention those things if you have to stay at that level superficialAn being serficial is all we do not need in the given situation

"Honest Words Growth, stability, decline, and death; such a law still exists Calamity awaits as the firmament ends In search of Dafa [Great Law] to save the people of their realms A myriad divinities descended to this world and suffered After eons of waiting, don’t miss this chance The Creator has long since arrived He spreads the Dafa and saves all lives While the Red Beast sows confusion with lies Your conscience will tell you what is true Man is blind to the gates of Heaven, open after all these ages We forget who we are amidst the delusion But Dafa’s truths will make sense of it all Your family awaits in the heavens above So quickly board the divine vessel and transcend this mortal coil March 15, 2012" Master Li Hongzhi (Hong Yin IV, from Falun Dafa teachings)

I don't like how Christians are considered by so many people as "keeping culture alive" in world history. It implies that pre-christian or non-christian peoples were somehow without a culture when that obviously isn't the case if you study artifacts like the metal working from Bronze age Scandinavia or the intricate beadwork of Indigenous Plains Tribes in North America. This kind of thinking is what erased indigenous cultures across the world. And furthermore who gets to decide what counts as "cultured" or "civilized."

Thank you so much for your efforts to help us understand this Rick. For some reason, the message isn’t getting through to the bulk of the people who need to hear it. Maybe they’re too busy eating Cheetos and playing video games instead of watching you. Coming up Next: Bread and circuses?

Your explanation of the fascia is phoney. At first it was the symbol of the lictores, Roman civil servants who were attendants and bodyguards to a magistrate who held imperium, namely the consuls of the republic. The fascia was ment to symbolise the lectures capacité to enforce the law personified in the magistrats they accompanied - and this by physical punishment (the sticks to flog people) and the axe to symbolise death penalty (by chopping the head off). This sign of power was then used by the fascists. It is by the way interesting to note that the fascia is still used in Frances coat of arms to symbolise the republic.
