I'm helping out a friend by doing belts and a shim check on a similar bike. I'm very familiar with adjusting valves on all sorts of other bikes but these are of course different again. This has been really useful, thanks!

Andy, many many thanks, i am currently in deep with my 900ss, with no compression on the vertical cylinder, and this has helped me a lot. I still think i will need to pull the head off to have a look at the valves, but i now at least understand more.

Good job man, I can share some tips I have but I’m not gonna just blast them on here to not discredit your work which was great. Love the math part the best.

In the vid you mentioned the drain hole and collet going down it. I bought the Hypermotard new in 2007, because I was going away for the weekend, 1200 miles was planned, the first service was coming up and they couldn't fit it in so they give me the oil and filter to do myself with the rest of the warranty service to follow, well guess what I found stuck to the magnetic drain plug yes a collet. Sick. I of course phoned them as I was going next morning and they told me to use it as it was under warranty, I did go but as you can imagine I was more than a bit unhappy about this. When I got back I left it with them. He wouldn't let me go in as he said it would invalidate the warranty as Ducati now new about it. He said he checked and all the collets were present it was probably dropped during assembly, my concern was one of the valves was running with one collet. He said this couldn't happen but looking at the design I dispute that. Also for it to be dropped during assembly this would have happened on the bench and easily retrieved as I have seen film footage where the heads are assembled by women on the bench, WOMEN eh! Guess ms Minx will have something to say about my comment lol. I didn't do many miles on it about 3500 over 2 years then bought the Harley and its sat since hence the belts getting done and a full service before I would even start it and while at it will check the collets. A friend of mine bought a Duke with the same engine a year later and for some reason after about 100 miles removed the covers to look at the belts and both were so loose you could see them sag Im surprised it didn't jump a few teeth. Mine were ok.
@ANDY56 жыл бұрын
I think it could run with one collet, not sure for how long however. Your mate was lucky with the belts, that could have been $$$$$$$$. As for the comment about women, Minx... have at it.

Thanks mate. I would if I had a need, but I don’t at the moment. I am currently overhauling the forks on a GS1000 on the channel, but they’re not in the same league.

Great pair of videos Andy! I’m about to attempt my first DIY timing belt and valve clearance service on my ‘94 Monster and this has just made the thought much less daunting! I have one query though, in most literature I have read, they describe the process of measuring the clearances as you have done. However one tutorial described calculating the closing clearance by checking the opening one first then pushing down on the closing rocker/valve and then measuring the opening clearance again. The difference between the two measurements gives you the closing clearance. I am not sure whether you have heard of this being done and what you think? It did make me wonder though. In your method, when you push down on the closing rocker to measure the clearance between the closing rocker and shim, how do you stop the valve dropping with it and closing the gap? Keep up the good work!
@ANDY57 жыл бұрын
G'day Marcus, good questions. The process you have read will work and yes I have heard of it. The best method would be to measure at the cam, but Ducati made that impossible, so these two methodologies are all we have. The reason that I do it this way is because it completely isolates the two. If you push down and measure the combined gap you are forced to use a calculation and you can not guarantee that there is no oil or anything else that is adding to the total measurement and I like to remove the possibility of me cocking up a calc etc. The valve is held in place a little by frictional resistance, of the seal mostly, but it doesn't matter because it will lift with the feeler gauge. You are measuring a gap between two hard points, the valve will float with the gauge, gravity and the weight of the valve will have zero impact on the gap. Thanks for watching mate, good luck with the job, Andy
@marcushudson15997 жыл бұрын
Yeah, could understand the logic of the other way but I wasn’t keen on using a method that added even more calcs and therefore chances to mess it up and order the wrong shims! Thanks for the tip mate. Marcus

Hey Andy , you should try all this on a 4V engine, lol. Also , you know that you can easily set the belt tension on a 2v with a 5mm Allen key. A complete shim kit is available for around $360, then you can play multiple choice without having to wait for individual shims. Damn auto play , I commented on the wrong bloody video, lol

Hello Andy, May I ask: Why are you working with these values here opening 0.05 - 0.12 closing 0.03 - 0.20 0.20 for the closing seems to be extreme So far I know (official Ducati workshop manual for 750 ss+ 900 ss) these values here are standard: intake opener 0.08 - 0.10 exhaust opener 0.10 - 0.12 all closers 0.00 - 0.02(!) I’m sitting here for my first desmo service and I’m really confused now ;-) Cheers! Oliver

I know that Ducati make great bikes but that desmo system is just barking mad, it's so complicated, fiddly and expensive to work on. My question is why would you choose that? I like the belt system, easy to maintain and quiet in operation. Then there is the clutch!! A mate of mine had a1098. It sounded terrible! How could you know if there is a problem on an engine that makes such a racket? Sorry but I just don't understand Ducati. I'll stick with my old firestorm for now.
