Hi Nick, they are great bikes and especially the base version you have. Once you get the suspension setup correctly they handle beautifully and easily a match for full sports bikes. Glad to hear you are enjoying the series. Congratulations on your new motorbike 👍 Kind regards Carl

Hi Carl. Thanks for posting this information. I have a '14 Multi that just kicked off the check engine light due to the front MAP sensor! Found the fix was relatively straight forward. Was able to remove the sensor by just trimming down an Allen Key. After installing the new one, the light went out immediately. However, the bike was running rich with poor performance under 2k rpm and excessive popping in the exhaust. Discovered the Melcodiag tool which has a MAP Calibration feature. Since doing this calibration, all is right again.

Appreciate all your problems. I bought a used 2011. I had the rear brake problem (DIY) and the front fork seal ($750 CDN). The battery on the remote was strong, but the receiver for the remote was not working. I can only start my bike with the key placed above the main display.

Hi Jeff, yes they are a labour of love, attention and money. But when running well... beautiful to ride. I seem to remember the problem you describe as a dash problem, I could be wrong, perhaps you can have a look on the forums to confirm. Kindest regards Carl

I saw someone with a OEM 2010 Multistrada exhaust on his classic (90s) Ninja. I think its a thing of beauty, that muffler is. Best looking factory can anyone ever made. I came here to oogle at one for a few minutes. They *do* want a pretty penny for a new one of them.

Thanks Carl We did exactly what you proposed. The oil was drained and no metal filings where discovered and yes the belt tension was out of spec and adjusted. There are no abnormal mechanical noises. After new oil and filter, the vibration has improved but still evident , albeit minor. Im now not sure if my head is just screwed up. Thank you very much for valuable input . Much appreciated. a Bit of unusual information re the 1260. I was between filling stations on a long trip and misjudged the distance. The fuel cauge dropped below 50 km but when the 10 km range came up, it changed to red and actually counts the distance down per km. It read 2 km when I stopped and by my calculation I had .5lit available...was super impressed with the accuracy. . Cheers and regards John

Hi John, I'm pleased you have improved things with the cam belt adjustment, and the oil was clean. It's nice when things work out and problems have solutions. Thankyou for sharing the experience with the fuel gauge I'm sure other Multistrada owners will appreciate the information. As I do. Just one extra thing to share, I once also thought I had an engine issue... but it turned out to be one of my earplugs....lol. new set of earplugs and everything returned to how I normally experience the sound on my multistrada. Best wishes Carl.

Hi Carl, thank you so much for taking the time to do this, I have a 2011 Pikes Peak 1200S , and your opening comments are so true. This is the most unreliable bike I have owned for many of the reasons you state, but it’s saving grace is that when it’s working and you can open her up it makes it worthwhile and she looks good too. I will be doing a track day next year which will be interesting. The detail in your video is spot on and although it’s quite lengthy it’s worth watching it all as there is a lot to say about this bike. I’m glad I’m not alone with these problems as I thought I’d bought a dud, but will persevere, just wish I’d seen this before I bought it as I would have taken out the mechanical warranty offered by the dealer. I thought the flickering indicator light was a problem with a bulb or poor contact, but it’s actually the entire dash that needs replacing so that’s £800 plus fitting as the mileage will need to be set and the dash programmed 😢 . The bike is very difficult to service it cost me £240 to have the plugs changed as it involves removing most of the fairing and the fuel tank. I guess Italian bikes have built up a reputation for poor reliability and they are demanding and they certainly test your patience! But they do have a certain charm can be hot and sexy , I guess that’s an Italian woman ??

Carl, OMG I’m glad I found you. This is the first vid of yours I came across but I’m headed straight to the beginning after writing this comment. I’m looking at a 2016 Multistrada Enduro. I’m not from Ducati. I’ve been Harley, BMW R1100 RT and currently both a 1000 carbed and injection 1400 Kawasaki Concours. I love the last 3 dearly. I’ll not be replacing the Concours but adding the Ducati. I’ll be doing the test ride later this week when the weather promises to edge to 50°F here in Wisconsin. The stuff I don’t know about this bike is overwhelming. The bike is in such pristine condition that I was taken aback when the dealer told me it was a 2016 and has near 31,000 miles on it. I’m also assuming it was owned by a British guy given two stickers on the back of the panniers. One is a Guy Fawks anonymous mask and the other is the Liverpool Football Club logo. Thanks, I’m off to binge watch your other vids.

Hello. Thank you for the comment. The 2016 enduro multi is a lovely bike and by now most issues will have been fixed. Its quite a tall bike but if works for your height it is a great bike, on which you'll have a lot of fun. At 31K miles the big service should have been done (belts and valve adjust) so the only other thing to check would be chain and sprocket's. Enjoy... Carl

Thank you for the thorough work you put into this series about the MTS. Despite this I recently ( 4 days ago😊) bought me a 2013 MTS S Touring with 38k km. Side and Top Pannier. Red , what else? Sachs Skyhook system, 2 plugs. Full service history, I like to think so. The ride is great! Enough power to play with. The looks is totally Ducati. The sound though is underwhelming. . Not what I expected when I think of the sound of my Ducati ST3 ., which was more Ducati like. Shifting gears gives you often false neutrals mostly between 4/5. Clutch catches very late, or is this only on my bike? No action below 3000 RPM and extremely harsh ride. In town third gear is max. Beyond that it's cumbersome. I bought it to replace my R1200GS MY 2007 because the maintenance costs of it frustrated me .Drive shaft(fail at 90K km), ABS module ( second time within 90K km) . It's pretty costly!( I payed around 2700 E to fix this) But when I see your posts of the MTS ? When you buy it new?? You must be a total idiot or very wealthy and more concerned with status, looks and what other people think about you than actual performance, reliability and practicability ! MTS 2010 , 2013 , 2015 is /was underdeveloped, full of bugs, pretentious without the means to meat its expectations? Ducati took at least 7 years to get the initial bugs out of the V2 engine ! They gambled that there where enough wealthy idiots out there to live their fantasy. They partially were right. Volkwagen put a tremendous amount in there to keep Ducati alive. And you are fine with that? I'm not! But I'm keeping mine for a while and the Beemer but after that it's over and out with Ducati and BMW. I wil sell these bikes , don't know which one goes out first., and buy me something more sensible and developed without bugs and acceptable maintenance costs . It has to be Japanese obviously ! And there is alot to choose from
@justthewayitis
@justthewayitis Жыл бұрын
Hello and welcome 🙏 Bleed the clutch fluid circuit and put in new fluid, this will improve the clutch feel. I removed the exhaust valve flap which really helps with the sound and performance below 3,000 rpm. I didn’t like Skyhook either that’s why I bought the base version which is much better. Yes, the Japanese bikes are more reliable let me know which bike you buy. Best wishes Carl

Congratulations for your videos on this bike, I'm watching them all! I really appreciate your way of explaining I bought a 2011 multistrada 1200 s sport with only 11 thousand km very recently, it's a marvel but I encountered a problem: when I accelerate beyond 7 thousand rpm in second gear and release the throttle the bike goes into neutral have you ever heard of this problem?

It could be the spring balance tension setting inside the left casing as shown in the video, without testing and looking at your bike it’s very hard to tell or advise, but I know mine improved after the spring replacement and setting both springs correctly. Best wishes Carl

I have a 2013 Multistrada, standard suspension, nearly identical and have had a similar experience. Looking to replace with a Japanese alternative as it is one thing after another: Broken clutch return spring, weak rear brake, battery tie down strap stripped bolt, rear suspension top adjuster failure, stripped air filter cover bolt, failed fuel level sensor, leaking fork seals, ruptured breather hose, stripped mirror mounting bolt, broken rear turn signal mounts, my clutch slave cylinder just failed...and I'm probably forgetting a handful of items....

Hello Les and welcome to the channel, sorry to hear you have had so many issues, but its fairly typical. The Japanese still make possible the most reliable motorbikes but they lack the styling the European manufacturers have. But it's all a matter of taste. The Yamaha MT 09 GTis a great bike with many happy owners. Let me know what you decide to change too. Best wishes Carl

Very good series of videos indeed. Thank You. There’s another known issue, the one that can get very expensive, as in my case: the crankshaft that brakes it 2 parts on the go. Mine has broken in 2 parts making damage to almost everything inside the engine, so I had to replace 85% of parts inside. Comes out, it’s a known issue, seems like a weak alloy, but Ducati apparently hasn’t officially recognized this issue, so it hasn’t recalled any bikes, but made a stronger crankshaft from 2013 on. Have you ever heard of this problem? Andrey

Excellent video with so much detail, i got my multistrada end of last year (after a life on sports bikes) feeling quite smug as I picked up (unwittingly) a 2017 PP slightly accident damaged (it fell over as the previous owner stalled on pull away) I'm just getting into it more and more, l did think "what is this bike all about" but its an incredible machine, the limitations seem endless im definitely going to do some track days. I'm going to do my own mechanics as I enjoy that side of ownership but obviously I'll have to take a hit when I eventually sell her without the ducati stamps in the book

It’s sometime time now that cannot take my eyes off the new Ducati v2 but service costs keep me away of this purchase. Also consider tiger 900 get pro and of course suzuki vstrom 1050. What is your opinion especially to Ducati and tiger? Many tanks / Makis

Hello Makis and welcome to the channel. You have selected 3 great bikes, if your buying new the Suzuki offers amazing value for money and is a great bike, the Tiger 900 Pro is probably the best bike if you are going off road and exploring and Ducati V2 is the better road bike with plenty of power and great handling . Reliability is good for all 3 but calculating service costs is important. If I was going to go off road and exploring I would pick the Tiger but if you are 100% on road the V2 would be more fun. Let me know which you choose. Best wishes Carl

Hey Carl, could you please share you thinking about the Ducati stamp, do you think it increases the resale value?
@justthewayitis
@justthewayitis 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, in terms of retaining the maximum resale value of the bike up until about 10 years old (for a Ducati), I think its worth doing. But after appropriately the 10th / 11th year its probably not as vital. But when we are talking about buying its really all about condition and how well the bike has been looked after. I hope that helps. Carl

Hi Carl Thank you. I really enjoyed the video. I own a 2019 1260s( My 4th multisrada) which has done 13,000 km. Its been fully serviced on due dates and I fitted a ful Termi system which unfortuantly adjusted the torgue band upwards . No need to tell you what an incredible bike this is but is has developed a vibration problem within the past 1000 kmn which is difficult to diagnose . It starts around 2500 up to 6000 and seems to get better after that. The vibration is felt through the frame, handlebars and seat and obviously gets uncomfortable on a long trip . The dealer did a complete check, engine mountings, etc but without much success. The bike runs at normal tempratures without any loss of power or suspicious engine noises. I am curious if you have come across this complaint or perhaps have a solution. John Cape Town
@justthewayitis
@justthewayitis 2 жыл бұрын
Hi John, two known problems are as follows. 1: main bearings but this is normally accompanied by a mechanical noise from the lower engine area. 2: a problem with one of the cylinders. But both problems are NOT very common and really the dealer needs to confirm these. But cam belt tension is a common issue and once they are adjusted it often improves the vibration greatly. Again the dealer should be asked to check and adjust the belts (2). Personally I would do an oil and filter change first and drain the oil through a very fine strainer and check for any very small metal fragments. If the oil is clean... it might just be cam belt tension that needs adjusting. I hope this gives you a place to start. Also, ask the dealer if you can try another 1260 to compare it to yours. Sometimes this helps you and them identify if the problem is minor or very real. Best wishes Carl

Hi Carl. I have been in the market for a used Multistrada 1200 and your videos have been very helpful! Many reviewers of the DVT engine say there is a power lag at around 5000RPM. Do you know anything about this issue and if it was ever addressed by Ducati or is it just an aspect of that particular engine?
@justthewayitis
@justthewayitis Жыл бұрын
Hi Tom, the dip is normal and part of that engine, but it can be greatly reduced with a remap and exhaust valve modification. The earlier ones (1200) didn’t have this issue. I did love my 2013 model but if I was to buy again it would be a 2017 DVT version but not the 1260 As the chassis is different and it’s corners differently to the earlier ones. Also by 2017 most issues have been resolved. And one last thing, they are all quick bikes regardless of power dips or exhaust valves etc. 4 seconds full throttle in 2/3/4 gear in high/high power mode and your way over any speed limits. Lol. I do miss my multistrada and I’m fairly sure one will return. Keep in touch and let me know which version you buy 👍 Best wishes Carl

High there. Appreciating your video’s. Some good watching, I’m just wondering what tank pad you have on there (knee pads). I like the look of the white. Apologise if you mentioned it in one of your videos I just haven’t been able to watch them all of yet.

Hi Ff6022, welcome to the channel. Hello, sadly I don’t have a full answer for you. I bought the upper tank pads from a company in Italy called AZ Graphishop.com, that I am 100% sure of, I THINK I ordered the knee pads from the same place. BUT I do remember first seeing the knee pads on Amazon as they had 3 colours options but the price was too high, so I then found them at AZ Graphishop via eBay, which is how I ordered them. So, I have looked at my eBay account purchase history for you this morning, but sadly eBay only goes back to 2020, and I bought the knee pads in 2019. I can tell you that the quality is brilliant, no fading, no pealing and they look like new even 3 years later. You could, take a picture “Screenshot” of the video with the knee pads in the picture, and send an email to AZ Graphishop.com, I do remember their English being quite good, and shipping times were very fast. A good company. I hope that helps. Carl

@@justthewayitis It’s a 2014 S Touring with 20K miles. Had Desmo service at 15K miles (which means plugs should have been done). I’m unsure. I think I have had it a while and mistaken it for a MAP sensor issue as I had ONE replaced just as I noticed running issues. I haven’t ridden it enough recently to narrow it down, but I think water is the instigator. Gonna check coil, leads and plugs hopefully tomorrow.

@justthewayitis
@justthewayitis 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Gordon, I’m going to presume you have checked the basics and made sure the battery has a minimum voltage of 12.7Volts and that all the cables are connected. The switch on the handlebar was a very common issue, ( see my Common issues video) I had mine apart twice and many owners replace theirs. So, I would start here first. Also, I know it’s going to sound very silly…. Make sure its in neutral…. Physically check by rolling the bike back and forward. Then try moving up 1 gear and back into neutral and try to start again. Carl. Also, sometimes a CELL inside the battery can die, so just because it shows 12 or more volts does not mean its good, if you can, try a different battery. and last tip.... disconnect the battery completely.... wait 30 seconds and then reconnect it and try again. let me know how you get on,Carl

The cost of dealer servicing would outweigh the potential extra depreciation one would think?
@justthewayitis
@justthewayitis Жыл бұрын
Hi Alistair, that’s a question only you can answer. I kept mine dealer serviced which did pay off in the end, but it was quite expensive and very hard for me to do as I’m a qualified technician. In the 3 - 1/2 years ownership I only lost 1000€ in devaluation which was actually very lucky. But mine was as you see in the videos mint ! If the bike you buy is a low-mileage one with full dealer history, then it’s probably worthwhile to keep going, but if the mileage is already high and the service history patchy, then cheaper options can be taken. Remember to put some money aside for unexpected problems just in case. Regards Carl

With 3500 miles its unlikely to be wheel bearings or anything major like sticky calipers. If your good with tools, perhaps remove one (1) brake pad at a time and gently clean the braking surface on 1000 grit sandpaper using a circular motion for 15 seconds with very light pressure. Then refit the pad and move onto the next one untill all 4 are done. Alternatively you could try cleaning inside the caliper / disc / pad area with something like brake cleaner spray. This may clean away contaminants and brake dust. If you are unsure or have any doubts call your local dealer. Carl

Hi, the EXVL error message means that during the system self test at start up the system has detected a failure or fault. Normally this is the exhaust valve seized or a spring broken. But I think you are saying you have a full termi system without a exhaust valve. In which case who ever fitted the full system should have used a Delete module... something like a Duc.EE module which removes this error message. I will be covering this in a future episode but for now I suggest you read all the information that your local Ducati forum will have... and there's lots to read as many owners have fitted this module. Hello Carl, just saw your video 5B about the problems Smith the Multistrada. I got a strange one. My 1200S DVT MJ 2015 was running 3 days ago, stopped and put it into the garage. 3 days later I want to go for a ride and "nothing" happened. No reaction on the remote key, the emergency key (red one) and not on the emergency push bottom. I thought the battery... but after checking the battery is ok. No chance the get any reaction on the dashboard nor any starting action. Have you a good idea or do you hear from such problems.

Hello Thomas Use your manual and check the fuses On the left hand side… use a multimeter. Take the remote key and hold it behind the dashboard then try the ignition … If this doesn’t work fit a new battery in remote try again…. If this still doesn’t work check the bike battery and charge it for at least 4 hours If the above doesn’t work you might have a problem with the dash unit The main bike battery only lasts about 5 to 6 years Let me know how you get on Carl

Next thought was the key battery - replaced it - no reaction. Even when I hold the keys direct to the antenna I get no reaction. What makes me really nervous is that the emergency boten where you need a PIN code also do not work at all. So something is really wrong and take place when the bike was "sleeping" over night.
