Hi Everyone, video number 16 of the Ducati ST2 restoration sees the installation of the timing belts and their associated hardware onto the 944cc 2V engine.
In the video I will take you through how I installed the following:
Belt cover rubber backing mounts
Camshaft pulley's
Timing Shaft drive pulley's
Fixed belt tensioner
Mobile belt tensioner
Timing belts
Timing belt covers
I will cover off the required Torque settings and belt tension setting in MHz

It is so easy to work with the desmo due engine. My previous 999s testastretta belt change was a pretty complex stuff, it took 1.5 hours to be done. On my current s2r monster I was done with the belt change in less than 30 minutes thanks to the foolproof workflow. No belt tooth counting , just lock the cams at the marka with a screw, cranks pulley set to mark and you are good to go with the new belts.

thanks for the video , I didn't know that 944 had special holes to maintain the pulley in a block position for installation of belts

Yes, I think they were introduced to the later engines only.

What a refreshing video compared to some others on the topic. Question: why does the Haynes manual say to loosen the 3 pulley bolts, I can't see a reason for this?

Awesome video. Really useful for my Paso 906, I think they're quite similar.
@DesmoWerx

Lots of similarities across the engine range, they are basically all a Pantah based bottom end refined over the years with different top ends. The width changed with later models from the 900ss onwards I think.

@@DesmoWerx un fact, Paso 906 bottom is same as 851. They were developed at the same time. 851 received the first desmoquattro top end and 906 kept previous 2 valve.

Great video mate. Got a Scrambler 800 which doesn't have the location pins at valve wheels. Struggling to see any other marks - any ideas ? Thanks

If the belts are still on the bike then mark the cam shat wheels against a reference point before removing the belts. Remember to have the engine at Horizontal TDC first though.

Thank you...i have a question please....are the special tools you are using.... válido for al motorcicles ? Or are ducati special tools? And where we are a le to buy them! Or are just for pros......Thanks again.

HI Carlos, some are normal motorcycle tools but most are specific to Ducati. There are a number of aftermarket suppliers who sell the copies of the tools.

@@DesmoWerx yes slightly and no locking the pulleys as on yours.. I'll post a photo later along with the late 70's idea of a belt tensioner.. unlike your high tech method...lol😂😂

I am suprised how you continue to tighten the nuts after the first "clic" of your dynamometer wrench? Is it the way it is supposed to work, or do you prefer overtightening rather than undertightening? AFAIK, I stop tightening as soon as I hear the wrecnh clic, and somehow it seems you tighten almost an 8th turn before stopping to tighten ?

It was a bad habit creeping in for the low torque bolts, paying more attention to the wrench when I am using it now. Thanks 🙂🙂

Thank you very much for your great Ducati Videos. I will change on my both Ducatis also the Timing Belts, but I don`t know where to buy the frequency measure tool and the pins to check the camshaft wheels. Can you give my an information? Warm regards from the Nürburgring.
@DesmoWerx
@DesmoWerx Жыл бұрын
HI Marc, If you have a good quality phone you can use a guitar tuning app to measure the frequency. Alternatively you can get an electronic belt tension tool from somewhere such as ebay. The pins I use are made by Laser, I paid £16 for a set from a tool merchant.

Where did you buy the fixed guiding rollers (for the cam belts) ? Are they original? At least the older on had a hopeless head, for a open 10mm wrench...

Adam I did enjoy your video and have followed a lot of them to this point . Could you add any light to the fact that factory settings for ST2 944 engine list Hertz for Vertical Cylinder at 146Hz and Horizontal at 121Hz. Also I note you measure your Hertz on Horizontal between drive and tension pulley and Vertical between drive and idler pulley. Do I assume tension is constant or length is the same . 110Hz is often quoted for 4 valve engines, ie ST4 and ST4s I own both ST 944 and 996 versions. Your thoughts
@DesmoWerx
@DesmoWerx 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Gregorio, Thanks for watching 👍😎 The specs you give are the old belt tension readings, there was a service update issued by Ducati sometime around 2009 that changed all belt tension setting for new belts to 110 hz +/- 5hz for all engines 4V and 2V The position I measure at is the one given in the manual to use for frequency measurement, I assume that this is a consistent position due to lengths of the belts in these two positions. Hope that helps 😊
