It is so hard to understand how impactful and important certain things to avoid or try to do in art are, until you see them in plain sight on two art pieces. It’s hard to understand how these are the same subject matter, they are so different and it’s really cool to see how helpful certain things are! Also literally the whole time you were drawing I was like, “wow, this person in the drawings seems really cool…”, that’s so cool it was you! You seem like a really fun person to be around! From the drawing on the right it gives p!nk vibes and I love it. Thanks for the amazing art pieces! Also thanks for literally not being like, the one with the mistakes is a trash piece, you should never ever do these things, you just give better alternative but still respect why people would still do the things you deem “wrong”.

I often draw with padded (or is it petted?) basically sketchy lines while still managing to maintain a clean ish look, so it's very much possible! Forcing myself to draw clean lineart made my art look stiff and often felt like wasted effort. It definitely comes with experience though; and it is very good advice for people looking to improve to be more confident in their lines and to try making them clean!

I am confident in my anatomy and posing, but I will say, if you are hypermobile, your art will reflect that. When I draw, I accidentally bend limbs in ways that non-hypermobile people would be broken. While in someway it helps with dynamic poses, but I've drawn a lot of hyper extended ankles, wrists, and knees by using mys3lf as reference. 😅😅😅

I am a hobby artist with no intent on getting better (so take any of my advice with a grain of salt) and I might have hypermobility in my knees, elbows, and spine and I have decided to embrace it in my art since it makes it feel a lot more personal. All of my characters will bend weirdly

For anyone wondering, to make your character blend into the background but still stand out, I like to make my background colors a little bit duller than my character. Then I color pick the biggest color from the background or choose a different color based on lighting and make an overlay layer over the entire piece, then adjust the opacity to 20-30%. Overall, really good tips and great video, as per usual!
@takashirochidori4923
@takashirochidori4923 Жыл бұрын
Note: I personally find that the overlay method will often produce rather monotone images. It's not that they look that bad, but the expression of the colours is limited. I like to use gradient mapping instead, which runs into similar issues, but you can play with the blend modes until you get a good impression. Then use a layer mask on the gradient map and erase some areas using a replace alpha brush to get some contrasting colours back, which you can also select and apply adjustments to. After that, go ahead and collapse the layers or refine on a new layer, and the end result is an image that has both colour harmony and contrast. Use it wisely

I do something similar using a color to kinda blend all the other parts of the piece together, of course the opacity is like 10-20% which makes most things blend well without making everything one color with diferent shades

Ngl. The line weight thing + petted lines was a big issue with me lol! Nowadays, the majority of my lineart gets erased when I'm done, but since moving to procreate, I've been trying to add variation and long strokes in. I've stopped shading with a black color after moving to digital, thankfully lol. I'm colorblind though, so picking decent shading colors can be a bitch for me. I usually use the multiply layer method though for each part. Admittedly, I use the airbrush for just about all of my shading, but I do it in a way that not everything looks so squishy 😅

I personally believe that drawing incorrectly can just mostly be more expressive than following proportions correctly… as long as it’s A deliberate action, and you consistently draw The character in that specific and unproportional manner for some reason, I am more drawn to people who shade with soft brushes, I watch a lot of cartoons growing up so maybe that’s the reason. I’ve seen people break the rules and still make wonderful pieces. I do agree with a lot of the facts that you discuss in the video, especially about backgrounds and tangents.

It's something I've been dinking with but I always feel like I make the line thickness almost too varied if that makes any sense? Like for example I have a character with tattoos like the one you drew and I really struggle with making the lineart thinner for them, They usually end up not blending into the rest of the piece because they are too thin compared to the rest of the bodies lineart and stick out because of it.

The thing that helped me a lot was doing a very quick (like, maybe one minute, at best) "line-art pass" in form of just drawing few lines in most critical places of the canvas, with a brush tool with its pressure size turned off. Like, a jaw at twelve pixels, nose at eight, hair and the clothes at six, etc. You can then easily see how your lines would look at their thickest and you are therefore able to adjust the size of your brushes, for every part of the piece, before you even start working on the actual line-art :--)!

Another term/concept to consider: value grouping! Since different colors (like, the base ones on your digital color wheel at max saturation or straight-out-of-the-tube paints) have different light/darkness values, sometimes just changing the shade isn't quite enough to readily distinguish the fore and background. One of the most common places I see it done (or do it myself, lol) is with backgrounds/environmental pieces that are out in nature and full of greenery - since air is blue, the farther back any given object is, the more obscured it will be by a faint, light blue, so most of the far-back bits will be a bit lighter, but also bluer, than the foreground greens. But, since yellow is so much lighter than blue, sometimes even a really vibrant yellow-green can lack contrast with a lighter or less saturated, blue-leaning green. The only hack I know of for checking your value grouping is to add a layer on top of everything else, fill it with white, and set the layer style to "Color", which will render the image in black and white. It's not 100% accurate, but in most cases it doesn't need to be imo. Idk, just thought I'd throw that out there. If anyone reads this and is struggling with unintentionally low contrast, hope it helps!

The texture thing I fully agree with on normal cases and that's personally how I would do it except when I'm emulating the manga artstyle especially shoujo manga, cause most likely those textures are screen tones from my own humble observation, but I know some manga artists probably draw their own textures I guess it would depend on the style I guess

One of my artstyles uses only 2 line-thicknesses in the lineart, one for the big shapes and outlines and the other one for the tiny details that actually make it look good. Especially in the beginning the non-pressure-sensitive brush feels really stiff but I mean it works in the end... anyways if your style doesn't work, try mixing different brush-sizes it really helps a lot.

I am actually shading with black and white (just chaning the opacities in the layers). I don't disagree that you should avoid using those methods. They can work in some circumstances pretty well but I am noticing that this shading method is somewhat lacking in some ways. I do add multiple layers of black and white shading and then use a smear tool to spread the edges so that the shadows wouldn't look flat and would blend in with the unshaded area. I think I need to look at more tutorials on how do people shade and I should come up with other methods of shading that I could streamline into my drawing methodology. In any case, these tips were helpful. Thank you.

I make one mistake on purpose, and plan to make another one... Eventually The first mistake, has to do with not varying my line weight/not varying it enough (something I'm trying to do, at least when it comes to digital art. Is have thick lines on the outside of the character, and thinner ones on the inside). This is for three main reasons 1. The tablet I use, doesn't natively allow pressure sensitivity 2. I don't really feel like buying a Sonar pen, to "fix" that problem 3. While you can fake pressure sensitivity in Ibis (the program I use). It depends on how fast or slow you move your pen... Or finger The second one, has to do with shading I plan to (again, eventually) cel shade my digital art. This's for two main reasons 1. I feel like it's the easiest for me to learn 2. I kinda already know how to do it (I say "kinda", because I only did it like, twice before. And both times I didn't exactly have a light source in mind)

Cause I do chicken scratch for proto-outlines to get an idea of the pose, position, size of parts and some background items. Obviously everyone « can » improve a lot of things about their drawings, so you’re not adding anything to the conversation unless you tell about some methods to do so. Secondly, the person you’re criticizing might be satisfied with their current skill level, and not striving to improve, which would also make the comment unnecessary. My question about these two pieces is this: you say these are drawings of yourself and yet, in the 'wrong' picture, your tattoos are on your left arm while in the 'correct' photo they're on your right arm. Did you intentionally put your tattoos on the wrong arm to remind yourself which drawing was supposed to have the mistakes in it? (Also, I really like both pieces. I like the 'wrong' one because it comes across as stylized choice more than a mistake and the 'correct' one because that smile comes off as super sultry, which gives personality to the rest of the image.)
@noobatredstone3001
@noobatredstone3001 Жыл бұрын
The tattoo contrasts with the skin by value as well as line direction, making it an attention grabbing element. That means it needs to be placed in a manner not to interfere with the “flow” of the picture (the path your eyes would follow when first looking at it). On the left picture, putting the tattoo on the other side of the body would lead your eyes to the leaves of the plant first, which point down and would stop you from looking at the character’s face. On the right picture, switching the side of the tattoo would put it close to the edge, far from the point of interest, dragging your eyes out of the picture before you even look at the face properly. As such, putting the tattoo on particular sides was either an intentional or an instinctive decision for better composition. Or maybe I’m overthinking it.

I keep gravitating to the one on the left more despite its mistakes. I think its because it feels cleaner and less overstimulating. I think the right one isnt appealing as much to me because the pose, while dynamic, feels a little too unnatural and the forground doesnt appear to be in focus to me. The background also feels chaotic and distracts from the foreground. I am also watching this on a phone so that could be contributing to it all. But both pieces are done well. Thanks for making this video it was very helpful!

For me it helps to think of the body in layers, first theres bones which gives basic structure and shapes, then theres muscles and fat which really define the body type and size youre aiming for, and lastly theres skin, facial features, hair etc that really makes a person or character recognizable. Studying anatomy is complicated, theres many ways to learn, learning realistic anatomy goes hand in hand with learning how light behaves and affects how youre seeing things

6:40 I don't think this is necessarily always a mistake though. If your character isn't holding anything or making a fist, then 99% of the time the last joint on the fingers isn't relevant anyway. It's the same thing with the "middle and ring fingers stuck together" trope that crops up in a lot of art of anime girls. I'm pretty sure no one does that with their hands in real life, but it looks neat in art so artists draw it all the time. Posing fingers with these shortcuts may not be realistic, but I mean...it's art. Sacrificing some realism in the name of aesthetic appeal is kind of the whole point. The trick is knowing when to use them -- in some artworks they might be cute or dynamic, in others they might be awkward or unnatural.
