My father born in 1921 taught me that style from recordings he heard as a youth. I'm sure older violinist remember their teachers.

Look for recordings of Aaron Rosand. He was an old-fashioned romantic IMO. His playing might be similar to this superb artist.

Yes! All instrumentalists are taught to sing like the human voice, because that’s where the truth in the music lies. Some great performers you can search for: Leonid Kogan violin, Janine Jansen violin, Jacqueline du Pre cello, Charlie Niedich clarinet, Emmanuel Pahud flute
