Ah, it's always awesome to hear people acknowledge, leave alone talk passionately about the PKNA series. First experience i had with it was when i was a kid, when i had the issue in which Duck Avenger and Xadhoom set out to Africa to destroy an Evronian spore nest. (I think it was called The Wells of the Moon, if i remember correctly. I'm translating on the spot from Dutch as i'm writing this). I had no idea how emotional or serious it actually was, nor that it was a self-contained universe at the time nor who, let alone what the Evronians were. As time passed i sadly lost that book and never looked into it, until when a few years ago the Donald Duck Premium pocket books (what we Dutch call the Jumbo Books) came out which are thicker and bigger than the average pocket book, with the uneven numbers telling the PKNA saga whilst the uneven numbers are telling different stories, from more mature Mickey Mouse detective-ish stories with literal attempts at murder if i remember correctly, to completely new comics about Darkwing Duck, to the adventures of Donald as his secret agent alter ego Double Duck. Now i have Premium Issues 1, 7, 9 and 11, i'm waiting for issue 13 to come out and i really want to add issues 3 and 5 to my collection. I'm sorry to say that i've kind of outgrown "regular" Donald Duck stories and my preference lies more on the more serious and mature stories of PKNA these days, although there are still "regular" stories that i really enjoy. As for my favourite character, of course Donald himself, alongside One and Xadhoom. It's not often that you see a female character as brutal, brash and unforgiving as her, at least for me, and she's got a kickin' mohawk. One is simply great, no other explanation needed, and Donald has always been my favourite, especially above Mickey. he's a bit of an annoying know-it-all, in my opinion, and i find Donald in general to be more relatable. Whilst he may not have as short of a fuse as in the regular stories (at least to my experience) , he is still a very relatable and recognizable character. Also, mah boi Evron himself! I haven't seen him in action yet, only Zotnam, but Evron manages to have a terrifying presence even with something as goofy as a duck bill! The artwork i've seen him depicted on so far on Google is awesome so far. Also, I really want to see Trauma in action! I'm a sucker for physically powerful characters that are more than just dumb muscle, one of the reasons for that being that it's been too long since i saw physical powerhouses being an actual threat rather than a dumb, general henchman, and i've seen too many rogue-ish characters, generic heroic sword-wielders, innocent lovely magical girls and more deal with them with much more ease than it should. It's coming out of my nose at this point. I think it's because not enough example of the power of such characters is given: if you give me a scrawny guy with a knife and a burly guy in armor and don't show me what they are capable of, yet they go down in a few hits, then it gets quite boring for me. I understand anime and such generally isn't a thing to be taken serious, though. I dream of the day that the Evronians will be present in a Kingdom Hearts game and more than just the European fans will know about PKNA... whilst i'm not the greatest fan of KH, i admit i have thought more about my version of a KH story with the Evronians in it than one probably should, as the saying goes. With one of my own OC's in the main role (who is a weird guy. He's immortal, nigh emotionless, fully genderless and generally clueless, but will do almost anything to get power. And i created him before i picked up my first copy of the Premium Pockets with the PKNA stories and fully discovered what the Evronians were all about, as i was too young to understand it all at the time) My idea *coughfanficcough* would be that they discover the Keybearers to be the greatest sources for emotional energy in the universe and cook up schemes to get the most emotion out of them as possible before Coolflaming them, from locking them up in absorption cages and letting them experience different stadia of emotions like they do with Beepos, to having Grrodon replace and impersonate one of them who has a love relation with another one, carefully manipulating them to the peak of their emotional stadia before they Coolflame them. Essentially it's like a really messed-up psychological version of Bio-industry, which i guess is a way you could put it. Correct me if i'm wrong. You made a really amazing video on the PKNA series, man, and it's because of PKNA that i found you in the first place. I plan to stick around here for a while longer, if you don't mind... and if the fridge at your place is full. Kidding aside, i've actually seen a bunch of your other videos as well before writing this after having watched this video for the third time. I'll definitely keep my eye on you! (And i love the part from 3:36 - 3:41. It's short enough to not be a violation of the eardrums, but loud enough to still scare off your socks!) Until then, i wish you good luck with any future projects of yours, and i hope you'll have a nice day, man! :) Also, nice beard.

@michelvanderlinden83635 жыл бұрын
this comic (named Super Donald in the Netherlands) was just so much fun to read. It dealt with some pretty "heavy" storylines for an (unofficial) disney cartoon. Hell I was kind of surprised to see the death of a certain (minor) character take place. I fully recommend anyone who is a fan of the superhero genre and Donald Duck to give this comic series a try when they can. It's a very pleasant read. *edit* Regarding Layla Lay, okay.. yeah I feel she was initially put in as a female love interest for Donald. However that tone later on shifted substantially to just being allies. However, her purpose there was NOT to just be eyecandy. Layla served as a strong female character in several storylines, going from time agent investigating the time traveling "-plunderer-" Raider (-I dont know his english/italian name-), to being an unwilling part in a timewar between the Time agents and androids who want independance. Donald also called in her help several times due to her ridiculous android strength. Yes, some artists gave her the Lola Bunny treatment for some shots, but overall? She's a great character and addition to the cast. *edit 2* The differences in artstyle (cartoony and "normal) is an easier one to explain. In europe we have regular comic books (A4 sized comics) and pocket comic books. The pocket comic books are generally speaking way more cartoonishly drawn than regular comics, which allow for much more detail. So in some storylines like Xadhoom's introduction, you have way better artstyle, and in some others like the moviestars being kidnapped by Evronians, things look more.. cartoony, despite it featuring the same previous villains.
@IndoManiac9010 ай бұрын
I agree with you regarding Lyla, I think she is one of the most compelling, strong and interesting female characters of all of comics. She also isnt a mary sue like so many modern female superhero characters are. The reason why Lyla couldnt fully be a love interest for Donald is probably because of Disney having strict rules that Daisy is supposed to be Donalds love interest across all Donald related media, even though Daisy is barely featured in the PKNA series.

My and my friends did this thing where we each bought one issue, and we exchanged to read, since none of us were really given money for this kind of thing. We absolutely loved it. One of my favorites (probably because it was one I bought personally) is the issue where he loses his memory at sea. It's not a hugely impactful issue, but it was so interesting to see how the sailors he met treated him (he wears a sailor's outfit, so they assume he's a sailor, obvs), and they discuss how one views the sea ("the sea is neither good or evil... it just... is.") and philosophically that kinda extended to how you view nature and the universe in general, which was thematic for the issue's villains (who were trying to manipulate some animals for their own evil intentions). There's also a scen where Donald, still amnesic, stops a robbery by instinctively picking up a serving tray and wielding it like the combat shield. Everyone is stunned, including Donald himself. It's just a really cool moment seeing ordinary Donald being seen as some kind of Clint Eastwood-esque badass that everybody respects even though they don't know where he came from or who he is.

I just had to quote that ;) Nice video, cool nostalgia trip. I'll add a couple notes that you might like: 1) PKNA was also the first attempt by Italian Disney to cultivate a "modern" nerdy fandom. PKNA #0 hits shelves just about when the Internet is starting to become widespread in Italy (I got my first 14.4kbps modem that year...) and the creative team was quite present on the web, talking to readers, supporting fan sites and so on. One of my friends was the webmaster of a PKNA fan site back then and he got to meet the authors a few times - that might sound normal now but it wasn't back then, and especially not in Italy, not for Disney comics. 2) Building on that, the one extra section you probably didn't get in the Netherlands was the fan mail. It was a huge running joke, with the team answering super-sarcastically to every letter and the fans lining up to be blasted by writing the silliest questions possible. The team once promised to send special cards to kids who would send a photo of themselves wearing a bathrobe in a phone booth... and people did, in droves. "Technical" questions would more often than not be answered with "Poche Ragazze Da Quelle Parti" -> "Few girls out there, huh?". And now that I think of it, this whole video and thread is extremely PRDQP. 3) The rotating artstyles are common in Italian comics; Sergio Bonelli Editore, the largest publisher of original comic books in Italy, does the same.

Damn thank you for making this video bro. I remember being obsessed with this comic series when i was really young around 12 years old or so (as well as the sequel PK2, the reboot Pikappa wasnt nearly as good but still decent, i hate reboots in most cases anyway. I think the fact that you have this established universe already with the Donald Duck Disney characters which I already knew and loved, combined with a new mature science-fiction/superhero setting made for a very unique combo that really made an impression on me that stuck, so much that I still think about it alot even today over a decade later. The only other piece of art/media that gave me a similar feeling was the Kingdom Hearts game series, for the obvious similar reasons. But even that wasnt as captivating as PKNA was. When I read PKNA for the first time when young, the stories were so complex and mature for someone of my age at the time, even more so compared to the Batman/Spider-man cartoons that were present on TV during that same time, the late 90s etc, that really stuck out to me in a similar way Anime was way more interesting than most western animated/comic stuff. It really makes me happy that the series is now ongoing again with the PKNE set in the same continuity as the first two, PKNA and PK2 series. Its not completely available to me in Sweden yet but considering how easy it is to get access to foreign stuff and media in 2023, I expect to be able to get translations of the full new series eventually (I have already read 6 or so of the first published stories of PKNE). I just wish this series was bigger in the west outside of Italy, and that there were more english speaking forums to discuss it.

I never grew up with these comics myself, but I did read regular Donald Duck comics as a kid and was farmiliar with the traditonal Paperinik (or as he is known here in Finland, Taikaviitta/"Magic Cloak") stories. I did grew out of Disney's Duck comics as a teenager and most of my comic reading focused on Marvel superheroes, which I also loved as a kid and am big fan of to this day, so more serious and Marvel-esque take on Paperinik did piqued my interest, when I heard about these comics by happenstance. Unfortunately, these comics aren't easy to come by in Finnish, since they were never super-popular in here. Although, that's partially the fault of idiotic way the series was released. After the first two issues were translated and published, they suddenly jumped all the way to the issue #35, which meant that Finnish readers didn't get the introductory stories of most of the major characters or important pieces of the larger story. Unsuprisingly, this meant that the few readers who were hooked by the first two issues soon lost the interest and the series was cancelled after only 14 issues. Luckily, they started to recently re-release the series from the very begining in chronological order, so we Finnish PK fans might finally get to enjoy the series in our native language from the begining to the end. Although, the situation still isn't perfect, since the issues are released with unrelated Disney's Duck and Mouse comics in thick paperbacks, with the pace of two PK issues per paparback, so if you are only interested in reading the PK series (like me) you are forced to also pay for stories that you don't ever plan to read and just take extra room from the shelf, but it's still better than nothing. Anyway, this was great video and I would like to hear you talk about the PK follow-ups =)

You should also check out the motion comics done by Stig, the man who was responsible for the English translations on the web. I did many voices for the motion comics; most notably the voice of Leonard Vertighel in the dub for "Fragments of Autumn".

Nice video man! Gotta tell you, this is my favorite comic in the whole world. I live in Finland where we had this comic for a little over a year, and man they screwed it up... They released issues #01 (Evroniani) and #02 (Il Vento del Tempo) and then jumped straight to #35 (Clandestino a Bordo). Can't imagine what was the fucking point of that. Anyway, the comic struggled for a year, and then it was cancelled in December 2000 at #46 (Nell' Ombra). I'm glad that we got the best for the least (#46 is beyond anything produced under Disney brand), but this series would've definitely deserved better. In 2014 they started releasing a special superhero-themed pocket book in Finland, which included PKNA from the very first issue on, and since then we've had the chance to follow the story in chronological order. The latest one we got was #16 (Carpe Diem), and almost certainly we're getting two more stories in November. Though I'm not sure we're going to get to the end because print comics aren't doing so good these days, and the publication of these pocket books is painstakingly slow - only twice a year with two PKNA stories plus bonuses like "Angus Tales". But the cool info pages and character profiles vanished with the original publication of the series. Well, you can't have everything...

I'm not aware of Disney products from other countries, but I believe that, at least in Europe, the experimentation that the Italian division has carried out is difficult to achieve... I mean, who could have expected that Donald Duck, an animated duck dressed as a sailor and irascible, could he first be reinvented as a parody of Diabolik and Kattivik, and then give life to a sort of mixture between Batman and Green Lantern? Not to mention the many characters created in Italy (especially by Romano Scarpa) such as Brigitta, Trudy, Filo Sganga etc... and the characters of PKNA are no different, on the contrary! We can also say that in that monthly magazine it was dared, given that comic book characters have always been considered as suspended in a harmless bubble: no character linked to Donald Duck has ever died, in American comics (from what I know), but in In PKNA there are more than a few characters who die (Xadhoom is perhaps the most famous death, but we also remember Zoster, killed by the inability to count the power of a star). Not to mention, finally, the enormous expansion of the duck universe that has been made over the years by Italian Disney: just mention Rodolfo Cimino, who wrote wonderful stories about Scrooge.

Loved these comics as a kid. Though for some reason over here in Finland we only got some of them. Many from the start and then suddenly the comics skipped up ahead to catch up with the latest issues, leading to so many never getting translated. I remember reading there had been some voting and people decided we should catch up to the latest releases.. even though there were numerous comic issues we hadn't seen yet, and now never will see in Finnish.

God I loved this series! And I don't even like superhero series in general. Neither was I a big Donald Duck fan. I was first introduced to the series by my cousin when I visited him at his grandparents' house (which was in a farm out on an island in the middle of freaking nowhere, and they had bought Duck Avenger issues...for some reason) I was instantly fascinated, but didn't start buying them myself until some time later. I think the first one I got was Månens Kilde, or 'Månekilden' as it was called here in Norway. I always loved the Evronian stories, though I often found them less intimidating than they should've been. Due to the fact that their aim is over twice as bad as the Stormtroopers in Star Wars, I find it surprising they conquered any planets at all. For some time I owned all issues released in Norway, but that ended sometime after Pikappa, which I think sucked so bad that it made me think less of the series as a whole. I liked PK2, but I have mixed feelings of it due to how it fucked with too many things that I had come to know and love over the years, much like how Legend of Korra fucked with some of the established lore of Avatar the last Airbender, but I still loved it for what it does right. I still haven't read all of the continuation. I'm not even sure I have much hope in it going on for long because I still have no idea how they even managed to greenlight a continuation to a series that ended two decades ago. Deals with the devil usually have some downside.

Not popular enough in the United States to create an animated series on him even though I like the idea. If they did I wonder if they’d have Rob Paulsen voice Donald when he’s Paperinik similar to how Bruce Wayne changes his voice when he’s Batman.

Wow. Just wow. Great video. I'm just glad to finally have found a video on any kind of Duck comic on the internet (And by another Dane no less. Sådan mand!). I did get one of the PKNA comics as like an extra included in a Donald Duck & Co magazine one time but I never really got hooked on it. Maybe just because it was too different, idk it was such a long time ago and it's probably lost in my massive stack of old Donald Duck comics. Also one thing I can say is that since the end of PKNA there has been plenty of Ducktits in the comics XD. Especially in the Double D (Agent Dobbelt A) Comics. They're probably worth catching up on. Especially considering some of them are really long.

I'm italian, so I got the chance to enjoy the full PK experience in real time. Unluckily the most recent issues by Gagnor feel like the third reboot series, more childly and silly. But I strongly advice that you get the chance to read the New Era material.
@IndoManiac9010 ай бұрын
Would you say that majority of the PKNE issues are like the mature PKNA/PK2 style of storytelling, or is the majority of it like the reboot Pikappa (which I agree its more childish and less interesting), or is it an even mix of both depending on issue? I have only read some of the early issues of PKNE
@BalzarCorporationRonflex10 ай бұрын
@@IndoManiac90 they are more like PKNA/PK2, except for the Roberto Gagnor storyline that has a "Pikappa" feeling because the author didn't fully understand the characterization and general mood.
@IndoManiac9010 ай бұрын
@@BalzarCorporationRonflex thank you for the info, yeah I did some more research and it seems most people agree with you that the Gagnor storyline is worse, seems to be partly because the art isnt as good now but also because the storyline is like you said more like Pikappa. Another issue seems to be that Gagnor is alone currently in the team when writing the new stories, in the past they had many different writers collaborating in creating the script and storylines if im not mistaken. i hope they expand the team in the future and start doing plotlines again that connect to the loose ends of PKNA and PK2, because apparantly Gagnor avoids doing that intentionally even though its still the same universe

Pkna is a completely other thing than the normal Pk stories, because in Europe Pk is one of the most liked Charakters, especially in my country.There are a lot of "normal" storys about him,for example "Phantomias in modernen Zeiten"(translates into:The duck avenger in modern times),while Pkna is a completely other thing and the Pkna comics aren't even published in normal comic books here.
