Duck Hunting 2019 INSANE 11 Man Limit

The big push of birds has finally arrived in North Dakota, and they are passing through quick. We hit the roads and find a ton of mallards and geese roosting on an open lake. We follow them to the feed, and get permission. With high hopes for a good shoot in the morning, that is just what we got.

That permission phone call stunk. I mean they got it, but these guys need to tighten up. I’m not a jealous hater. I live about 1500 miles away, so they aren’t interfering with any ground I’ve got permission on but they need to be more conversational: ‘How ya doin this afternoon, my name is Ray Finkle. Do you own ‘x’ field? Ok perfect, I’m glad I’m talking to the right guy. I noticed there’s a good size group of birds in the field and I was just wondering if I could have permission to hunt them? Ok thank you very much, I appreciate your time. I know it’s a busy time of year for you. What are the ground rules for being in the field? We won’t leave any trash in the field and any trash we do find, we’ll take with us. We won’t leave anything behind besides some feathers and footprints. Are we allowed to drive into the field? Where should we park our trucks? Would you be interested in some meat from the birds we hunt?’ Etc. I don’t mean to make a sweeping generalization on younger guys these days, but they tend to be very awkward with vocal conversation as opposed to text conversation. Call me a grumpy old cocksucker all ya want for anyone who wants to thumbs down this comment, but it’s true. And the guys you’re asking permission from are my age, so I don’t think I’m that far off the mark on how you should approach this deal. Establish a good rapport with landowners and you’ll be able to hunt their land for years.

Ray Finkle 😂👍🏽 Agree completely. I’m old, too. Nothing against these younguns, they work hard and do pretty good, but the old balls don’t mind a little more chatter/info. And sometimes a bottle of Dad water, if they partake, might get you the green light for the season. That and a gift of some fowl jerky even if they say they don’t want it. All that said, I dig these guys! I think they hunt hard and respect the sport!

Perhaps spend some of that money you spent on the Sitka gear and use it at a range. 30 shots and 4 birds come out of flock is not exactly stellar. Take turns on the small flocks. I imagine some of those birds were hamburger . Nice field. Nice setup. Like the dive bombs.

Hell of a hunt! I know it’s 4 years ago but holy cowwww that permission call was painful lol. “Hey is this ___? Great! My name is ___ and I was curious if you would be willing to allow my friends and I to hunt your property for ducks/geese/etc in the morning?” Also a sure fire way to get your name out there is have each guy in your group contribute 10 bucks into a gas station gift card. Land owners really appreciate it, at least in my experience. Keep at it!

meghan754 So are you a keyboard hunter or a trigger puller? Don’t want that to sound snarky at all! Just asking. My little duck honey hole here in northern Colorado is already iced up and I’ve yet to shoot a bird since dove season. If we stay frozen, it’s now all about waiting on geese.

@@jdkOutdoors I have been shooting ducks and geese for 22yrs, I also shot competition shotgun. Our duck season doesn't even open until Thanksgiving. Best is late December and January. When you shoot 22,000 rounds a year, talk to me about insanely poor shooting. Several reasons for most poor shooting, not having both eyes open, not shooting from dominant eye shoulder, being to excited and not keeping your face into the stock.
