Glad to have checked out the video, I was introduced to Boktai through Megaman Battle Network (a series I had found in my childhood, but couldn't remember until nearing my adulthood) and really fell in love with the series, I've played all games and I thank you for talking about them, it was a nice trip through memory lane (though I didn't play them that long ago, and played the games in order and consecutively, finishing Lunar Knights like 2 years ago). It was also very cool of you to shout out Kura 5, I did find the game around the time I was still playing the official games and played for a bit but then droped it completely for reasons I don't even remember, it was a while ago that I remembered the game and wanted to scratch that Boktai itch but ultimately didn't come to anything, seeing it recognized here made me glad and hopefully one day I'll reconnect with the game and catch up. On another note, I'd like to also mention the existance of an official Boktai manga, there's a video that covers it by the channel FlashingBlades, so if anyone wants to check it out you can search for it there.

I only have one objection to the first part and that is not discussing the endings in the first Boktai game, namely difficulty endings, like what happens with Sabata post-credits of boktai 1 and the burden he carries, but again, only up to 17:08. But still does cover the events for 3.
@justinwilliams11272 жыл бұрын
Love the review of the series. I still have my original cart for Boktai 1. I do wanna talk about the time travel of the 3rd one. Sending someone back in time is a pretty harsh punishment, genuinely. Imagine being sent to any time period even 50 years previous to your own; It would be chaos for you. As for Infinity changing the future, time travel theory dictates that it only changes the timeline he is sent to and not the one he lived in. The moment he is sent to the past, he is being sent to either a divergent timeline or even an alternate universe. Thus, he doesn’t actually get to change his original timeline's future, just the one of an infinite amount of timelines in which he just so happens to land on Django's release switch. Does it matter? Nope. I just find this kind of discussion interesting. Regardless, I appreciate the meticulously deep dive into such an interesting and underrepresented series. I was enamored by this game as a teenager. I can remember playing this game while at an NFL game instead of watching the actual game. Thanks for this video. Loved it.
@ThrillingDuck2 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it! And actually that's a RLY good point about the divergent timeline. I've pondered about that phenomenon in the past with other media, so I'm a little annoyed at myself for it having not occurred to me in this case haha. Thanks for the insightful comment :)

@@ThrillingDuck One thing to note about Trinity's time travel. He *never explicitly states* that he got sent back to the past as punishment by "someone", just that it's a harsh thing to happen to him for stealing.. He wonders whether it was a warp or a slip, it's not unreasonable to think he tried to pull an Aladdin with the bread and ended up falling into a random time portal, like through a warp magic square. While yes it does sound more convenient and dare i say contrived, it's at least not AS DUMB as some immortal unwittingly sabotaging themselves. This is corroborated by the fact that time travel does exist in Boktai 2 (House of Time side dungeon) which coincidentally also uses warp magic squares. Another tidbit that might explain a few things is the fact that Trinity followed his mom around before she died, who had "wicked powerful punches" and was obsessed with the legendary warrior, whom Trinity is a descendant of. NOW WHO DO WE KNOW THAT'S OBSESSED WITH DJANGO AND HAS SEVERAL JOKES ABOUT HOW MUCH PUNCH POWER SHE HAS? HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.....Trinity may not be from THAT far into the future after all.

Though he mentioned the use of Blacklight to game the solar sensor, he missed the Overheating mechanic which "overheats" the gun (or django in the second and third game). This was allegedly done to prevent the player from spending too much time in the sun but it can be also be interpreted as Kojima's attempt to stop people from Blacklighting their way through the game as blacklights are typically a more concentrated source of UV. Awesome video btw!

I feel it's proper to point out that throughout the classic trilogy, there's a couple instances of overly Advanced technology tied to the whole conflict between Solar and Moon children and the Immortals: such as the towers of light and darkness respectively, and the very base that Hel made use of: which was a GODDAMN SUN-POWERED COMBAT SPACE STATION on a course to cover the sun. All this technology is implied to have been created to Specifically fend off the Immortals who one day appeared into the world and took the monstrous denizens of the world - vampires - under their wing This does also give foot to my personal theory on Lunar Knights and Polidori: at some point after the disaster brought upon by Vanargand, the immortals had created Balance temporarily, and thus most left, leaving behind an inspector to do the thing he does in the game: test the vampires on their capability to take the reins of humanity. That, and the Immortal sponsoring of the Vampire specific clans also gives foot to Why there's so mant more pieces of high tech weaponry and whatnot, from the Solar Guns, to even Lucian's weapons Speaking of Lucian's weapons, they all seem to be monstrous in some way, the Vanargand opens up, the Jörmungandr carries with itself a thrust way beyond anything else on the ground; and Hel's blade straight up opens unnaturally into a claw, with the whole thing fucking OPENING to grab whatever the hell it's being wielded against. The tech's always been there, Lunar Knights just takes it to the logical extreme
@AndrevusWhitetail Жыл бұрын
See here's the thing, the immortals and vampires outside of Lunar Knights were always one and the same. They were aberrant Moon Children who sort of "fell on the dark side of the force" as it is. Sabata explains it so in the first game, Moon children blood has two sides, Lunacy and Mercy (later renamed Affection), and while Mani (Django and Sabata's mother) had overwhelming Mercy (and thus being titled a Moon Beauty, with the absolute power to control all elements), Hel her sister (and thus technically Django and Sabata's aunt) went mad in her bid for power caused by jealousy and thus became the queen of immortals...AFTER Ratatosk's agent, The Count who was sent to spy on her instead fell in love with her. It's pretty much evident that Ratatosk and his ilk, the so called "Dark Children", the immortals are basically a maddened sect of Moon Children who by their admission (just listen to Dáinn in Boktai 2) think they are carrying out the will of the universe by trying to control the Ancestor Pieces (Vanargand and Jormungandr for example) to cause all living things to go undead, thus breaking the cycle of life and death and secure their own true immortality (because...despite being CALLED Immortals they certainly can and will die thanks to being purified by the sun...except the Count, who has like a bajillion bats to rez himself with) The best part of this all is that this scheme of the immortals has been going on for generations, why else would the 4 immortals of San Miguel be locked behind the quarter-seals that seal Jormungandr away? As for the technology, it's your standard "lost civilization with advanced tech" trope. Even as far back as Boktai 1 there were floating sky cities (Sol City, not just Dark Castle btw) that were long abandoned, the whole Energy Storage mechanism, the Solar Gun itself...It wasn't just to fend off the immortals, since...well a good half of the tech were made by them before they went insane. ...yes i'm a Boktai nerd, and i put way too much thought into this. There's so many unanswered questions left in the trilogy that tells a really fucked up story if you really start thinking about it.

@@AndrevusWhitetail I don't know if it's in the Japanese version of the manual, but even in the manual for the first game it states that Immortals came from outside the Solar System. Oh wow! Tbh I don't usually engage with postgame content much, so I never rly explored it. In the case of Lunar Knights this is largely because I don't find the combat SO enjoyable that I have the urge to engage with it outside the momentum of the story. But I'd love to hear what lore the Vambery Tower adds if you're willing to share :)
@sean1oo12 жыл бұрын
@@ThrillingDuck no no that’s definitely a reasonable argument especially since it was also pretty challenging needing you to climb 100 floors. But lore wise The vambery tower is essentially a biological seed vault polidori created to collect dna which he uses to recreate all the bosses fought throughout the story including polidori himself. However as you continue to ascend the tower and find Perrault the truth comes out that these are soulless copies of the deceased. Eventually you end up destroying the final tower and the last remnants of polidori where you find that dumas has regained his body and soul due to Perrault/Schrödinger interrupting the space battle with polidori during the games finale. So since we don’t have a means to permanently kill immortals in this game (a la piledriver) polidori didn’t truly die until the vambery and because of this act Aaron and Lucian killing the emissary of the immortals was considered a declaration of war between earth and the immortals. However dumas points out that time is irrelevant for beings like them and the war could be in any scope of time be it tomorrow or thousands of years from now. Before leaving he proposes a truce between the humans and vampires against the immortals, that Lucian rejects. It’s left ambiguous so you can take it as the immortals could be involved in the next game or they don’t retaliate in our protagonists lifetime forgoing needing a sequel.

How sad that they couldn't port this game to a console wich can sense sunlight (and even adjust the screen according to it) Seriously there was no reason NOT to port it to either switch or 3DS AND it would get kids outside.
@ThrillingDuck Жыл бұрын
Honestly if they really wanted, they could have just patched in solar control or even an in-game weather system like Lunar Knights had. Konami’s already demonstrated willingness to add an ancillary feature here and there like with the Castlevania Advance Collection. I wish they’d give Boktai the treatment too…

Lunar Knights IS the dark future, set in a timeline where Django starved to death in the crypt in 3. Lucien IS Sabata, he's refrenced his involvmemt in the events of 3 a few times. The Immortals all control diffrent areas of the planet, the area Lunar Knights is in is only a area controlled by The Count. Ratatask being in control still isnt out of the question, just your in one Immortals jurisdiction
@ThrillingDuck Жыл бұрын
Lucian is Sartana. When does he mention being involved in Boktai 3? And even if he was somehow, Sabata isn’t immortal…
@Rebel3000 Жыл бұрын
@thrillingduck289 ... damn i always thought he was Sabata with how he spoke in game, given hes infused with Dark Matter and raised by a Immortal. Also theres Vampires being born of the Earth while Immortals are of the Cosmic

Was Boktai 3 released in America? I have 1 & 2.

Boktai 3 never received an official localization, but a very good translation patch has been available since like the early 2000s :)

The puzzles of the first and second game are so damn good. 3 and LK are too actiony, which is a shame.
