Great retrospective on a forgotten gem. Thank you. I actually bought this when it first came out. I got into a situation wherein I was sitting at a local park, playing Boktai near sundown. I was able to kill a boss vampire, and then drag his coffin out to the Piledriver just barely in time to actually kill him before the sun went down. The solar sensor was only reading 1 bar by the time I was done. I kept the game on, checking the sensor reading, to see how much longer the fleeting sunlight would have lasted. The sensor was reading ZERO less than three minutes after finishing up with the Piledriver. Pretty sure it's the closest I'll ever get to feeling like I'm a vampire hunter racing against the sunset. Felt epic and immersive.

I'm finishing a stream series where I've been playing through all the Kojima games, and I'm on Lunar Knights now. I'm saddened to finally finish this series in its entirety (20 years later I got hands on Boktai 3!) but I'm SO happy that I got to share my love and adoration of this series with my audience. May The Sun Be With You!

Do Boktai fans' brains just link together like Wifi? I was thinking of searching for a video like this and it released so recently! Very good video! I'm very happy and appreciative such a good video on the game is made in the modern day. Honestly they could release an "HD collection" on steam with the feature of "FEATURING BOKTAI 3! NEVER BEFORE LOCALIZED UNTIL NOW!", but these are wishful thoughts. This game is very near and dear to my heart. I took it everywhere with me and my mom got me all three of the localized games. I ended up playing Boktai 3 later when it was patched. I have very fond memories of her as she's no longer with me. Everywhere I went with her, I took these games with me. Even through those tough times, Boktai reminds me to stay strong and keep the sun always in your heart. ^ ^

I’m very that that the game underperformed, but regardless it was one of my favorite games ever. It still is. I literally think about that game at least once a day. Going outside was never an impediment for me. I would wait for the weekends if I had to. I would play when I could barely see the screen under a bright sun, or during the winter. This game was a masterpiece to me.

Great video for a Great game. Lots of stuff i didn't know about, it was really interesting. Played it a long time ago and it became one of my favourites, though didn't know about those unique events, makes me wanna replay the whole thing again. Also thank you for that Kura5 link, didn't know it existed.

About the switch. There is actually a possibility to replicate the solar sensor with the inferred detector on one of the controllers built in. It's an underutilized feature that isn't used on the switch that could help with interacting with the real world.

Wouldn't mind a Steam legacy collection that uses the real world weather and location of the PC to simulate the solar levels.

Stellar video! I listen to Lita regularly to this day and it is my favourite Konami IP - hitting a weird middle ground between by MGS and Castlevania interest. My only real fault with your video is the use of VGChartz which was always a dubious metric for measuring game success. It may suck if Konami didn't comment on numbers but it is still better to avoid using distorted data which may be right for the wrong reasons (usually getting lucky or more likely correcting themselves to use official figures). The release date of the DS, localisation/cart costs and missing Summer for the states (we got it in May in Europe and the second game in June) are all reasonable places for speculation and there are probably translated interviews to that effect too. We don't have better alternatives unless it is a million seller by Capcom (they always disclose these even if the game is unsuccessful) or a top seller which ends up on some respectable charts (NPD in the States, Chart Track in the UK, currently Famitsu in Japan - latter gives numbers but UK gives bonus data at times).

Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand is my favorite game in the series. Unfortunately, its sequels didn't capture what made the original so memorable. Nintendo not continuing to make DS handhelds has left a bunch of its games stranded (Super Control Mecha MG, Slide Adventure Magkid, etc.).

Not really a science guy here but couldn't it maybe work on the switch using the brightness detector of the switch and calibrating it to only detect UV? Probably the joycons IR sensors wont be able to since i think they are opposite to UV in the light spectrum. Anyways very nice video!

To be fair, if you can’t go outside to get any sun, you have bigger problems than not being able to play the game.

Nakamura "May" want to continue Boktai. BUT a question Do the kids of today WANT Sun and all of its shininess. OR Do they wish for the undead? I bet it the undead now
