Currently enjoying duck eggs and chicken eggs at our place here in VA. My Swedish ducks don't lay very many eggs but they are good quality. And the extra males that hatch make a fine meal.

My husband and I are in the learning stage of our journey and though we wanted a few ducks before watching this video we now focus on that as a goal as we cannot have them where we currently are due to zoning regulations. Your enthusiasm is infectious and we appreciate the information too!!

That is awesome Heather! We moved to the country because we weren't allowed to have chickens and it was just chance that we even have ducks. One of our friends was moving and she gave us 3 ducks and that was 4 years ago. We now have about 17 ducks now and we really would like to get to 100 laying hens. Good luck on your journey! Big Pond Farm Glad they are working out for you. My neighbors, who are at least 300 yards away, and over a hilltop had ducks and those critters never shut up. Maybe they where call ducks? Being able to keep the muscovy in my fences is a huge bonus. Chickens roam to much, and once they leave the electric fence line it's coyote diner. I have a few survivors that learn to hang with the sheep, and the dog, and not roam the hills. Realy helps keep the sheep health, having the chickens on the pasture at the same time.

Hi Mike! I have a serious question: How is the mosquito situation with the pond? I'm considering creating a decent size pond (I have a well too!) but the fact it won't be too far from the house is a concern since mosquitos and midges love to feast on me!!!!! I have four Indian runner ducks but am planning to increase my duck flock in the near future as I think the eggs will sell really well in my area (south east coast of Italy!!) as I don't know anyone who sells them and they are very costly in the supermarket if you can get them at all!!! Another helpful video, thank you

I am planning for a small pond (say 4 feet X 4 feet X 4 feet) for edible fishes (tilapias sort). assume i go with a handful of ducks (say 5 to 6) for personal use, do u see a potential problem with the ducks using the same pond that the fishes resides in ?

I hope you have the time to answer some of the questions posted here. My chickens will fly over their fence once in a while, but they usually come to the house or the dogs herd them to me. I'll cut one wing. It usually works. Is it the same with ducks?
@MikeTheFitFarmer7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question LillyMay! Even though the ducks have been bred to not fly well, I still suggest clipping the wings like you have done for your chickens. I have personally seen our ducks get a running start and glide over our fence with unaltered wings. (Also for others that may be wandering you only clip one wing)

Love Love Love the Duck! I really want to get some duck eggs, however several people in our family, cousins I think have had a reaction to duck eggs. So I'm sort of afraid to try them. How does one know if they are truly allergic to duck eggs, before you eat one. My cousin Rita's husband made her a beautiful wedding anniversary dinner of Peking duck and somehow used duck eggs in the recipe. She ended up in the ER. They told her that she is not allergic to the duck itself, however she is allergic to the duck eggs. Weird, huh? One would think if you are allergic to a duck egg, then you would be allergic to a duck too! Go Figure! I hope that I am not allergic to either. Ducks are soooo cool! I will do some research to see how you can find out if you are allergic to duck eggs. Amazing video! Thanks Again! And please tell your wonderful beautiful wife she does and amazing job on these videos! And I also think that she is a wonderful Mom! Journey On!

@kemosabe1707 жыл бұрын
I am deathly allergic to chicken eggs from soy fed chickens. Chickens fed wholesomely, with other whole grains that I grind myself, give me no problem. I think a lot of the allergies have to do with what the animal is fed. Also, quail are known for anti-allergy properties . . . .

@iarellano276 жыл бұрын
Big Pond Farm I have no idea how old is she but I know she is a Muscovy duck
@MikeTheFitFarmer6 жыл бұрын
Ok we don't have Muscovys but we have had ours stop laying for a little while. Muscovy ducks only lay around 200 eggs per year so it could be a couple things. She could be molting, she may not be getting enough protein in her diet, and you need to check her to see if she had mites or lice. These are places to start from. She could also be past her prime laying years. I hope this answers some questions. If you have any more questions just let me know.

Big Pond Farm sorry for the late reply but what should I feed her so she starts laying eggs?

We have a flock of 14 ducks. The only thing that ducks don't do that chickens do is scratch a till soil. My ducks trample and pack the soil, compost, and mulch. Do you see your ducks and chickens working together when it comes to turning over soil? This is the only reason I'm considering getting chickens. I'd like them to turn my compost pile better. The ducks love the compost but I have to continuously turn it so they can get into it.
@MikeTheFitFarmer6 жыл бұрын
Hey Brian! Yes ducks do just kinda trample the ground into a muddy mess but if you move them to a new location they grass that grows back is super green and thick. As far as chickens they will scratch and turn your compost but you still may have to turn it a little but not as much as with ducks, it will also depend on how many chickens you have and how big your compost pile is. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching!
@brianmikus60236 жыл бұрын
I've done some things that have minimized the mess of ducks. First, I built a platform out of 2x4s. I made a frame frame with hardware cloth that I keep under their water supply, Which is a 4" pvc with 2"x3" slots cut out for them to drink through. I have a float valve that keeps the pvc full. Water can drip through the platform out of ducks reach. (I also drop seeds & beans through the mesh in the summer to sprout and the ducks eat them when they grow through the platform. ) I keep about 4" of hardwood mulch in their pen that they stay in when they are not out foraging in the yard. The mulch absorbs excess water without becoming a mud pit. We get the mulch for free or really cheap from tree services in the area. The great thing is the mulch provides a great medium for earth worms which the ducks also love. I flip the mulch every other day. In the summer I also find black soldier fly larvae in the mulch under the feeder since I raise them nearby. Then I built an elevated pond for them. The pond is about 16" above ground level. I built a deck around it from rough planks that I get for free from a nearby sawmill. I left gaps for excess water to drain down and away from the mud miners (ducks). So for the most part, mine aren't messy. I will be working on a filter for the pond this spring so I don't have to change the water out as often. Maybe I'll mane a video of all of the stuff I mentioned. I do have a video that shows some of it but not showcasing it.

I'll make a video tomorrow if the weather holds out. We're supposed to get snow again tomorrow. Happy spring. For the winter I used a 50 gallon stock tank with a heater and a deck on top of it so they could only access through a 3" gap on one side. Had plenty of water instead of ice. The deck kept them from attempting to swim or lounge in the hot tub.

agree. if you are a small farmer and your raising chickens instead of turkey, ducks, and quail. you're crazy. lol with a side of meat pigeons. utility. if you make your way into the ethnic markets and restaurants. it's where the money actually is. The saddest thing about farming today is everyone's trying to sell meat, corn, and potatoes. trying to run after that cash crop without realizing what people actually want to eat and what markets are open for you really in your community. I had a friend in Norcal who actually walked the streets and ask people what they want to buy in his area. turn out it was something weird. he grew that learn how made good money. why are farms dying? cos they don't listen to what the customer wants or explain what they are selling when they got something food and interesting.

Do your ducks eat table scraps and yard waste like chickens? Don't much about ducks.

Hey Mark! Duck are more picky than chickens, they do love lettuce and other greens though.

Reason No. 3: Ducks are good looking; chickens are ugly. I'm betting another reason is the going rate for duck eggs is higher.

Yes we are able to sell the duck eggs for a higher price. Thanks for watching Craig!

I'm sorry but ducks do not lay more eggs than chickens.... I love ducks but they are only justifiable if you have water on your property because they make such a mess.

Actually it depends on the breed of duck as to how much they lay. Khaki Campbells (like we have) can lay 300+ eggs a year and you are hard pressed to find any chicken that can lay that many.
