I have 29 ducks and 26 chickens , and have never had a problem with any and when it gets slightly dark they all know where to go and they look for me to tell them go ahead and go and they will go into their assigned coops ( 1 small 2 mediums and large coop) and see that I close the doors to each coop and they are safe from predators, I have lost 1 duck to a dog that came near the fence and the duck was sleeping, I bought these huge cement mixer tubs for my ducks to play in ( 4 huge deep and 3 medium size ones they love to swim in and I clean every other day, I have a 29 lbs turkey would loves to be the guard bird to the flock so I'm set. My ducks only make noise when they see I'm in the yard with snacks and I tell them ok I have snacks and they all stop quacking.

The duck shield...This is genious! This was one challenge our first attempt at ducks (and the overly aggressive drakes). Don't think we could handle Khakis. While we don't live in town, I think our closest neighbors would still set our house on fire with all that racket! Lol Man, that's noisy! Muscovies it is. They aren't much to look at, but you have to just forgive them for their quiet nature. Lol

I just lost another hen to hawks this morning and was considering getting a guard goose. My guard dog is becoming too old and ineffective at protecting the chickens anymore. I wonder if the Khaki Campbells would be another good option, since they are loud and could possibly scare hawks? I do love duck eggs, especially for baking.
@MikeTheFitFarmer5 жыл бұрын
I would definitely get a goose. Greg has been great with the ducks and chickens. Hawks will come after Khaki Campbells as well because they aren't huge birds. We also have some type of structure for the ducks and chickens to go under when there is an aerial predator.
@homesteadblessings88865 жыл бұрын
I have heard they are a lot of mess but have heard the eggs are great. I became vegan over 39 years ago because of getting very sick. I make meat and eggs for my husband and he loves it all. When ( I did say when) God blesses me with land in the country I would love to have chickens and ducks. It was my job when I was little and lived with my Pap and Grandma to collect the eggs and clean the coup. I really feel so blessed having your family as part of mine. It probably drives you nuts that people think of you as part of your family but God called me to your channel and I do feel as if you are my family. God's blessing to you and yours.

How about the Welsh Harlequin, which was bred from the khaki campbell? I have three coming for backyard, picked the WH for being one of the best breeds for temperament, etc. The khaki Campbell was of interest to me, but they are more energetic than the WH, so I picked the WH for suburban living.

Yes they will continue to lay through most of the winter, you may have to up their protein intake but that isn't hard to do. Our ducks are much more reliable layers than our chickens.

Yeah, I was doing research to see how i could naturally seal the duck pond I plan to dig this summer for getting ducks next year and found out that they can seal it themselves! I think that’s pretty cool! Good deal on the duck shield!
@manlyadvice17895 жыл бұрын
Ducks can help seal it, but it will have to hold water in the first place. Clay is the typical solution, cost effective and long lasting. Just find a guy with a backhoe, excavator, or bulldozer and ask if he's built a pond before. There's nothing better for compaction than a tracked vehicle. You'll face lots of little issues along the way. Just remember that other people have already solved those problems, so be quick to learn from them. Lay the liner of the pond with your local clay. You may (sometimes necessary if your local clay doesn't take compaction well) use sodium bentonite clay with some sand to seal the surface (requires heavy compaction) and then bury it with local soil or sand to help hold in the moisture and prevent dry cracking. After it fills, you may need to use montmorillonite clay powder to get the suspended clay particles in the water to fall to the bottom. Then start adding the rights plants, fish, and other life. Avoid turtles as they sometimes try to bite pieces off of ducks and are capable of doing it. Remember that shading the surface of the water (including floating plants) helps prevent algae growth and evaporation. You could try doing a really small pond, but that will actually be much harder to maintain than a larger pond with the right life in it. What you really shouldn't do is dig a small hole that will have to be pumped out or the water filtered or manually replenished. If you already have flowing water on the property, you could make a pond work at any size.

I feel bad if they can't get in the water and splash like crazy. This is why my chicken and duck yard is a mess LOL!! Wish I had a nice pond they could go to. And yes they are super noisy. I have a Call cross and she is SO LOUD. And I live in a subdivision lol.

I like the first 2 duck videos I watched. I’m going to watch again to see type of fence material you use. We are fenced but the opening size is larger and we can’t let them go into neighboring farm to eat their greens. I think we are going to to add a 24 inch strip of chicken wire along bottom of our 1 acre pasture. We are up in the Great Northwest - lots of slugs n snails. I hear ducks are good about eating them. Thanks and happy Spring !

We have a mulched area for in the winter ( the mulch after winter is awsome compost) in the summer ours mostly free range and have a huge pond to run in . We never have a mess lol but they have alot of room to roam. We use mess shields during the winter so we dont have such a mess in our coop.
