***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.
We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.

I have made a decision in my life at 53 and for serving this country for 21 years in two branches of the armed forces. I am not paying taxes or registering anything ever again. I will no longer ask permission from my elected officials. They will seek my permission, and I shall gain my authority from God.

My parents had exactly that mix of ducks - plus a few Indian Runners - so you are bringing back happy memories for me! Harley, their Harlequin drake, lived to 13 years in age! They then got Call ducks - like miniature Pekins ... which were the sweetest little girls ever! They only had to hear my voice when I visited and they'd come running - they knew I'd help them search for slugs and snails in the garden they were only allowed in under close supervision! I swear all the ducks used to belch hard before they slept the night of the slug hunt, as they were so full!

Around apple trees the ducks pick up the coddling moths before they can do damage to apples. Ducks are very good foregers for other pests too. If you have a apple orchard less worms in fruit with ducks. Some pesticides are not good and is better to use ducks instead of spraying

You don't have to make a new watering bin/tub thing. Just secure popsicle sticks partially over the holes. When the ducks get bigger, you can remove the sticks to accommodate their growing size. Also, if you cut an access port in the top, you can refill it without having to remove the lid.

Great setup! Also, they need b vitamins added to their water or brewers yeast which has B vitamins. It keeps their legs from becoming deformed. I also use an extra large plastic dog dish flipped upside down for their waterer. The underside lip contains the water. I love your idea for a waterers and will try that , too. God bless!🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️

NH had a state school that raised most of their own food and I think many of the clients worked the farm while living there. Rumor has it that people were thinking it was "mean to make those poor people work like that!". I was thinking that I'd rather be doing work and feeling worthwhile rather thanliving in a building doing who knows what to pass the time. I think it finally shut down - probably a land grab by someone managing the town....

I love my ducks but the duck muck is hideous lol You did not mention Rye Neck which may help folks also. We feed all our birds non medicated feed and the medicated will actually cause the Rye Neck in ducks and geese. Very important info. We are also in SW MO so thank you neighbor, from our homestead, great info n the waterer!

We have a rescue goose with angel wing on both wings. She can spread her wings, but they don’t fold flat. The game bird feed has higher niacin level than the 18% chick starter. If you add niacin (brewer’s yeast) to the feed, they do fine on the chick starter, and you don’t risk angel wing. That’s what we use and our ducks are happy and healthy and able to walk. Some people might ask why not give the ducks a nipple waterer. The bbrrrbbbrrrbbbrrr of the ducklings is how they wash out their nostrils. If they don’t have a way to wash out their nose, they get sick fast. Your ducklings look fantastic! I look forward to watching them grow!

You can tell drakes from ducks even at an earlier stage than the curly tail on the drake's back. The drakes make a soft, raspy noise, whereas the ducks (the females, no wonder!) make the loud quaking noises.

Ducklings are adorable. It's awesome you guys are adding more ducks to your homestead. Like you, we started in the city. We lived near a pond. The city had torn out all the vegetation around the pond so the mama ducks would come up in the neighborhood to nest. Our flower beds were filled with nests every year. We were excited to learn more about them and that is when the homesteading bug bit us. Over a period of time we became known as the "duck house". When a duckling got separated from its mom after a storm or something, people would ring our doorbell and drop them off. We built a coop in the back yard and would raise them and keep them safe until they were old enough to take down to the pond. The last two we raised didn't want to leave - a male pekin and a female cayuga. She went broody so we let her nest. Eighteen ducklings later we knew it was time to put that for sale sign out and find some property. 😂 We also had four muscovies that had taken up residence in our back yard. We've been here just under a year and haven't looked back. Our muscovy population is now at 26 and counting and we still have our Pekin/Cayuga family. We've added some guineas and chickens. Looking to add some turkeys and geese this next year. Thanks to your series on rabbits we are also adding them to the homestead soon as well. May God continue to bless your ever growing homestead! We love your videos.

A strip of wood attached horizontally accross the outside of the container. could be screws but even hot glue * could work (it does not stand heat or water, so one can take it off). The wood strip would be above the holes (and covering the row partially). Attaching it: two small holes at the end (plastic and wood). then screw the wood on with a counterpart (on the inside of the container). So the watering opening is not a hole anymore and the space to slip through is reduced. The wood strip could be drilled out of center, so you have 2 options how much you reduce the diamter of the and can adjust it easily. Would save the work of drilling and smoothening the big holes. The hot glue is the quick fix - the only thing is, in theory the ducklings could tear it down if the glue is weak and they are bored. So one would have to check on them. I guess they do not drink during night, so no danger they will take a swim that freezes them. I wonder if one could put a little grease on them, rubble it in and then fluff them up with a polyester or silk fabric to create some static electricity. That is also important, it is not only the oils, the static (when the ducks work it in or mama duck does that for her ducklings) is also important.

We have just used 16 percent feed along with Brewer's Yeast added in from birth. They did great. The Brewer's Yeast is expensive, but assures their health.

Kevin, you have become a fine presenter, I have watched you grow over the years and it is a joy to watch. One question have you ever raised geese? If so, what are the pros and cons? May the great homesteader bless you .

We kept our ducklings with our chicks. Non-medicated chick starter at 21% works just fine for them, plus giving them some thawed peas to bob for daily in a water dish supplies their thiamine needs. For their drinking water we just put the chick waterer on top of a tub with a screen over it to catch water and that is super easy to clean out as needed. We had about 70 chicks, 12 ducklings and 12 turkey poults all together in the same brooder and they were all fine.
