I think it's a counterweight of some sort. Possibly the weight that holds the sweep back until it is needed.

I worked on these at the Fair Lanes Bowie location back in the 80s & 90's. Neat machines.

Chas Gantz. But our Fair Lanes in Davao City, Philippines doesn’t have these machines, just Pin Boys.

One good thing about these kind of machines is that they have less moving parts than the old Brunswick’s

Both Sherman and Brunswick A2 (or even A and Jetback) Pinsetters are built like tanks and will last forever

It would have been nice and easier to follow if the shooter stayed focused on each part of the operation for a while . . . so the viewer could understand it better . . . than jumping all over the place. Damn near dizzying.
