weather or no weather, if breeding populations are down 50% from their historic highs, there are less ducks to fill the flyway.
@jacoblogsdon2850Күн бұрын
Overall breeding population is right on par for the 70 year chart. The flyways aren't big used as much anymore. No need to migrate if you have all the food and habitat you need coming from private farms.

@ 1999 BPOP was 14 million. We are at 6.6. 2016 was 13.9 million.
@perrinpartee557Күн бұрын
@@jacoblogsdon2850 refuges with food and managed pressure definitely have birds that display high levels of wintering fidelity/philopatry. My farm is one of those. We have a lot of mallards. But when populations are cut in half from their highs in 2016 at 13.9 million, everyone is going to suffer. Everyone around me is having bad season. But in years with high BPOPs everyone wins. I remember the late 90s. Everyone had birds. Most of our hunting success is based on BPOPs. More birds to fill flyway. There are some counting methods with BPOP aerial surveys regarding non-paired drakes that could lead to over-counting ducks. Mainly because our drake to hen ratios have tipped heavily towards drakes. Dave Rave is a former USFWS biologist that dives into this on some of the interviews he’s been on. Definitely worth a listen. I think we need some modifications to the BPOP matrix and the timing of when USFWS does May pond counts to improve accuracy of counts. That way when we plug the data into the AHM framework matrix, it’s not “garbage in, garbage out!”

you cant push down ducks that don't exist. LOL There is very little water North of I70 at this point and the great lakes are freezing fast. Do we have to kill them all before everyone realizes this? Time for 30-45 day seasons and 4 daily bag limits.
@jacoblogsdon2850Күн бұрын
Sir, You are slightly mistaken. Duck numbers are stable and right on par with a 70 year survey. The reason the average guy doesn't see them anymore is because they are being farmed. They have spent the last decade imprinting their flyway to these duck farms. Give man enough money and they can manipulate anything.
