@@kkeller968 He may have been super fixated on fame in the original, but he always did what needed to be done. What made the character endearing was that despite all his attempts at finding glory, he gave it his all while taking a massive beating in the process. The slapstick helped ground the character and stopped him from becoming unlikeable, since he constantly had to struggle for his victories. Even then he was more often than not not recognised for his deeds by the general public and some his fellow hero colleagues. The original Darkwing never would have got the key to the city like this version did, at least not super early into the series, so you would root for him more because of that. That said, the rebooted version of Darkwing Duck is also really good in his own way. While I do prefer some elements from the original pilot that this episode reflects heavily, this to me is a near perfect reboot of the classic series. I was honestly surprised by how faithful they managed to be to the core of these characters while still making them different enough as to not become a rehash.

Disney has made the Darkwing special available for free on KZbin as well as their app. They are AGGRESSIVELY pushing this episode as a must-watch. The last time they did this was with the first episode of Ducktales three years ago. I'm convinced it's a back-door pilot

@Frozen_Death_Knight

@ArtsyDucks It's a smart business move in this day and age. Nowadays it will be hard to get the attention from kids if it isn't easily accessible on popular platforms, which is at the end of the day Disney's target demographic here. Kids do not actively tune in to watch shows on TV like the kids born before the early 2000s, so if you want to reach out to the newer generations you need to be where they like to spend their time; i.e. KZbin. I think there are multiple factors as to why this episode got this treatment besides it being a backdoor pilot for a new Darkwing Duck show: 1) DuckTales 2017 is old news by now (it's already been 3 years since it launched). If they want more people interested in DuckTales again Disney need to promote it. 2) This episode has significantly more effort put into it than the other ones, so if you want to promote the show, you had better put your best foot forward. 3) Since this episode also functions as a progression of the overall season 3 story arc, it is a way to get people invested before the finale, thus boosting the overall viewer numbers before that finale arrives. 4) The reboot is very obviously trying to establish an expanded universe version of their old properties to replicate the success of the Marvel Universe on the big screen. If DuckTales is successful, then it stands to reason that Darkwing Duck as well as other Disney Afternoon franchises can get rebooted successfully. More shows -> more viewers -> more money in the long run. I hope the episode becomes a smash hit, since the people behind the reboot have honestly done a really good job at making DuckTales 2017 a worthy successor to the 80s series. Can't wait for more. :)

You can tell that the crew behind this show really care for these characters, telling great stories while paying a loving tribute to the Disney Afternoon. As much as everyone wants a spin off, I'd much rather have them interconnected. And if there were to be a spin off I'd prefer having the ducktales characters show up for the overarching plot main plot even if most episodes are focused on darkwing. I think that's definitely doable by the showrunners with how things are set up, however, one show would be on hiatus every season. Edit: also if ducktales ends the story continues through darkwing.

One thing I loved about this episode (and there was a LOT I loved) is that Darkwing, *felt like Darkwing!* When “the Duck Knight Returns” aired and he said “I AM better than Gizmoduck” and then put on the hat, I said “oh yeah, that’s Darkwing.” Which was only cemented by the reveal that it was Drake Mallard all along. This episode doubled down on that feeling and took it to eleven. Chris Diamantopoulos (sidebar: doesn’t that just sound like the most Disney name?) does a fantastic job at channeling DW’s frequently frustrated but caring dynamic with Gosalyn. He delivers the “Terror that flaps in the night” speech before the Bulba beat down with great conviction and genuine badassery, and it’s verisimilitudinous on multiple levels to have Darkwing Duck be a fan of Darkwing Duck, played by an actor who presumably was also a fan of Darkwing Duck _who became Darkwing Duck!_

@@waterlily7075 Quackeroonie was a catch phrase of the triplets in the original Ducktales. When they got out of that dimension in this episode and are talking over each other, you hear one of them say "what does Quackeroonie mean, anyway?" so I assume being in that dimension must have effected them just as much as Scrooge going on about a sea monster eating his ice cream.

@@kenetabansi5016 If you mean my vignette, no. It's a parody of the closing scene of the Batman TAS episode, 'Beware The Gray Ghost', wherein Adam West voices Bruce's TV childhood hero. I just used Scrooge here because he, not Fanboy Launchpad, is the billionaire adventurer. 'Quackeroonie' or sometimes 'Quackeroo' (I remember both from my college-age viewing) was a catchphrase on the original Ducktales, which it was implied the four got cast into, however peripherally. I'm guessing that the loss of Alan Young and Russi Taylor, among others, has killed the idea of a true xover, though Turtles 2012 had Kevin Michael Richardson doing a great job on both the 2012 and 1987 Shredders, so maybe David Tennant could ask Matt Smith to give it a go for 1987 Scrooge? Now this was an ultimate payoff! I love how they managed to retell the pilot episode of the original "Darkwing Duck" show while also making Scrooge's group feel important to this story. Everything from the kids learning about Bradford Buzzard being the head of FOWL, to the Darkwing trio's interactions, Taurus Bulba unveiling his true colors, and the Fearsome Four invading St. Canard left me at the edge of my seat. And keen gear! Gosalyn is finally in "Ducktales," and I can't wait to see more of her in the future. I also loved the easter eggs, like Classic! Scrooge ranting about how 'A sea monster at my ice cream!,' Launchpad and Gosalyn disguising themselves as two of the lesser known Darkwing villains, Bonkers' cameo, and even "Fluppy Dogs" (which I remember seeing a couple of times on Disney Channel as a little kid). Now more than ever, I really hope we'll get a new "Darkwing Duck" spinoff. Or at least "Ducktales 2017" will get a fourth season, just so Negaduck will return to the spotlight.

I didn't mind Bonkers as a kid, but it's really hard to sit through an episode now. I think referencing him like this is more than satisfactory, but if they are going to reboot Bonkers, Disney is going to have a hard time of it. I mean how do you even start to explain the Mad Hatter existing in this version of Ducktales. I would rather they focus on the Ducktales show and eventually start the Darkwing reboot. Maybe after all that, they can safely work towards Talespin and Rescue Rangers. Bonkers is really far down the list of Disney's priorities IMHO.

One thing that's realized from the episode is that the episodes of Darkwing Duck, even though they have the same series names and number order, as in our universe, Episode 3, Beauty and the Beet, and Episode 21, Just us Justice Ducks: pt. 2, obviously had Darkwing working as a lone protagonist, without any helpers. It is likely, for this reason, that Jim Starling's ego became so inflated, that he eventually suffered the psychotic break that turned him into Negaduck. He had no Gosalyn or Launchpad to help keep him grounded. He was the star, all by himself, and when the series was cancelled, he burned out, oppressed by real life, and his loss of being a worldwide star, damaging his frail, overblown ego to the point where the character was more important to him then his real life was.

So, if I'm hearing all this correctly, we have the following programs blended into the new DuckTales cartoon: DuckTales(1987) + The old comics. Fluppy Dogs The Wuzzles Adventures of the Gummi Bears Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers TaleSpin Darkwing Duck Goof Troop Bonkers(And, by extension, Raw Toonage.) Mighty Ducks: The Animated Series(Only on a technicality, and because people would say that I forgot to mention the show.) Legend of the Three Caballeros That, and the non-series material, such as the aforementioned old Uncle Scrooge comics, The Legend of the Chaos God, and even the concept of Double-O-Duck. At this point, I'm convinced that not only will we see the likes of Goliath and the Manhattan Clan, but also The Genie, Timon and Pumbaa, Shnookums and Meat, and even Winnie the Pooh. And that's not even going into the idea that seeing Mickey Mouse is an actually likely possibility at this rate! ... Can we just let the folks at DuckTales(2017) handle all of Disney's television reboots for the foreseeable future?

There was a subtle joke/nod to the original DW series I noticed, but have yet to see mentioned. A running gag in the original show was that DW very rarely got recognized for saving the city/world/whatever. So in this episode, he saves reality (with some help) while Gizmoduck basically clears a bridge from Bushroot's vines. And yet Gizmoduck gets the credit for saving St. Canard. Made me laugh anyway. Here's hoping this becomes a backdoor pilot. I do love me some Darkwing.

"Let's Get Dangerous" shares a plot similar to an old episode of Darkwing Duck titled "Twitching Channels". That episode featured Darkwing and Megavolt accidentally traveling to the human world where they discover they are a cartoon series. It turns out that a writer, E. Thaddeus Rockwell, had a helmet which he could use to tune into the frequencies of other dimensions. Darkwing Duck the cartoon was created by listening in on the adventures of the real Darkwing Duck. In the end he lost the signal to Darkwing's world, but tuned into the frequency of the Rescue Rangers universe. Ducktales, and specifically "Let's Get Dangerous", actually makes an easy to miss reference to that old episode. In "Twitching Channels" Darkwing encounters a group of human children who start asking he a bunch of questions. Two questions asked are about Drake Mallard's job and whether or not Launchpad wear other clothes. Ducktales answered that first question when they established that Drake Mallard is or was an actor. "Let's Get Dangerous" doesn't answer the second question, but does make a reference to it when Gosalyn says they should get changed and get ready to head back out, to which Launchpad asks, "You guys have other clothes?" What I find interesting about this episode is that just the other day I was thinking about other villainous characters like Professor Norton Nimnul and how he could be on the show. He's a human on the original Rescue Rangers and I thought they could easily make him a dog or duck in the DuckTales universe, but now they've established a multiverse and so they could easily bring the human Nimnul into this series with ease. The Ramrod was destroyed at the end of this episode, but it's possible another could be built, or maybe destroying the Ramrod instead of shutting it down now means they've torn a hole in realities and are still technically in danger. On my first watch of this episode I thought for sure they would have a Negaduck cameo at some point. Sadly I was mistaken, but I did think Bulba's recording was meant to showcase the super villains for a potential mystery buyer. When confronted by Bradly he mentions "Bulba Super Villain Solutions", which made me think he was using the Ramrod to basically sell super villains to would be buyers. I expected the mystery buyer would be Negaduck, but that didn't happen. On my second watch I noticed he mentions making the recording to threaten world leaders so I could have been wrong about his intentions. I'm pretty confident they're setting up for a Justice Ducks versus Fearsome Four, or Five, next season. The current season has been all about characters with abilities or powers coming into their own. Boyd is now aware of his history and abilities, possibly becoming a sidekick for Gizmoduck. Lena now has her own powers which she will use for good. Penumbra was unsure of her role on Earth, but realized she could still be a protector on this planet like she was on the Moon. I suspect this is all set up for the Justice Ducks and they've spent just as much time working on making villains too, so I'm sure at some point Negaduck would put together his own team.

First off, thank you so much for getting caught up in order to deliver this to us the day after it aired, must of been so much hard work & it is much appreciated. Next thing I want to address is how excited this episode had me, I actually theorized something somewhat like this episode back when Beware the B.U.D.D.Y. System episode aired because that's when it was revealed that Darkwing Duck was just a show in their universe. I'm still in touch with some friends I made over at the Old Haunt back in 2010 so I threw this idea out to them that what if we got an episode that's like Twitching Channels? Technically, this did bring in some elements of that episode because Tad Sto- I mean Thaddeus Rockwell had a device that allowed him to listen in onto various universes & create a show based off of them with it ending on him hearing stuff from Rescue Rangers so I do love that they mentioned that TV shows from their world echoed other universes, it's such a nice way to build up that Disney multiverse. I'm happy I wasn't entirely wrong with my theory, back when I thought about it, I figured they were going to pull either just Megavolt & DW in from their universe or him plus the most important villains that don't already exist, since I knew SHUSH existed from the very first episode of the rebooted series since I tossed out my theory on Mrs. Beakly being a SHUSH agent to Aaron Sparrow back when all we had was the first episode & he didn't confirm or deny it BUT told me about a particular cut scene where it's revealed that Mrs. Beakly & Gabby know each other, I knew she was a SHUSH agent so I knew FOWL existed in their world too so safe to assume all the FOWL agents already existed in their real world. It wasn't until we got Negaduck's origins when I was like, alright so my theory was wrong & we probably won't be seeing any Twitching Channels shenanigans going on but hey, glad they did bring in the Fearsome Four even if they did get sucked back in but I kinda hope they wound up in the Negaverse & a hole to it stayed open inside a bakery & Negaduck discovers it & brings them back & forms the Fearsome Five but hey, that's just some false hope given Negaduck does exist in what's their real world so safe to assume we won't be seeing a Negaverse but if they did end up in their own reality & a hole does remain open to it, it's gotta be inside a bakery to pay some tribute to Life in the Negaverse & Everything. Also, quick question, did Professor Waddlemeyer actually have a first name in the original series? I saw Darkly Dawns the Duck at least a million times, I have the uncut version of VHS, I don't ever remember them saying his first name so if them naming him Thaddeus was for respect towards Tad Stones, it's absolutely perfect, especially given the Tad Stones stand-in in Twitching Channels also went by Thaddeus. Whew, that was long, sorry about that, I got over excited. I do have to say that I appreciate your extensive knowledge on the Disney duck universes which now it is confirmed as a multiverse, one I have so much interest in so I'm very happy this is how things went. I didn't really read the comics as a kid, I have one Uncle Scrooge comic that I came across in a antique book store for $5 & I bought it, it's still in pretty good condition even though I read it multiple times & whoever owned it previously probably read it a few times too. It's actually the one where Scrooge & Glomgold had the competition to see who is the richest duck & Scrooge won by the string attached to his lucky dime. Other than that, as a kid, I was super into Ducktales, it was one of the first cartoons I really got into & was one of my favorite shows for a long time. I remember being a toddler watching Ducktales reruns on the Disney Channel, I was born in 1991 so I was a bit late too the party. Sadly that meant most people my age didn't care for Ducktales which sucks because I hosted the Cartoon Club my junior year of high school & only like 4 or 5 people came the day I brought in Darkwing Duck to watch & I was even questioned when I submitted the announcement for the Cartoon Club playing Darkwing Duck to the morning announcements person, he was like "let's get dangerous? Don't you think this will draw in the wrong crowd?" This was before the 2010 comic books came out so most people my age didn't know about Darkwing Duck but I was lucky. I was upset when Disney Channel stopped playing Ducktales reruns but thankfully my grandma had just gotten a new channel at the time, Toon Disney, so like around late 90's/early 2000's whenever visiting my grandparents' house, I'd watch Toon Disney to see the shows I loved when I was very little again when I was just little but Darkwing Duck & Talespin were new to me, dunno if I just completely missed them when they played on Disney Channel or what but I ended up hooked onto Talespin, Darkwing Duck, not as much. I actually only watched it when there was nothing else on & I was bored but I will admit, I liked the theme song & that's what got me to check out the series again in 2009 & then I wound up hooked on the show, I loved the slapstick & cartoony humor & I do believe part of that comes from when I first tried watching Darkwing Duck, I was Ducktales obsessed still so I didn't like the change as much & I wasn't really that into superheroes until 2004 when I got super into Danny Phantom & my tune on superheroes changed. I got more into slapstick cartoon humor thanks to discovering Toontown in late 2003 then getting my first membership in February 2004. I watched Looney Tunes & some other cartoons with that general humor but I didn't appreciate it until I had to use gags to save Toontown from the evil cogs, having years of playing that game also helped me to appreciate Darkwing Duck more so 2009 was definitely the right time to spark that obsession, especially given in 2010, I was able to buy the first issue of the new comic book as soon as it was released & I kept up with buying the comics. To conclude, I don't have extensive knowledge of Disney duck lore so I'm super appreciative of what you can bring to the table but I did happen to watch a lot of Darkwing Duck over & over & over again back when my obsession was riding high. I was able to recall so many different moments from the series & even had a bit of a timeline of when things went down in my head but I had to work on that one since the series is so out of order, long story short, I ended up writing down all the important episodes leading up to Just Us Justice Ducks just so I could host a Darkwing Duck themed sleepover for my friends who are super into Disney. I was like Launchpad, I knew A LOT about just that one thing, sadly I'm a bit rusty since I only rewatch episodes every once in a while here & there like the other day I was in a spooky Halloweeny mood so I rewatched the Haunting of Mr. Banana Brain which actually I remember seeing that on Toon Disney as a kid, gave me this spooky nightmare since I was sleeping in my grandparents' basement during the time, the phone rang in the middle of the night which caused me to be half awake but I dreamed that my dad answered the phone & Paddywhack came through the receiver but then I snapped up awake & the phone was still ringing although little me was so scared that I hid under the covers of the bed until the phone stopped ringing. Figured watching that episode again would fill in my need for something Halloween related. I am so happy you got out this review in such a short time, it means a lot to me & I'm sure many other fans too. I love Darkwing Duck, I was so dang excited for this episode, it means so much that this happened. Can't believe it's gone from when I wore a Darkwing Duck shirt to Emerald City Comicon in 2012 & so many people commenting that they hadn't heard of that show in so many years, even Jess Harnell complimented my shirt, told me a story from when he did a voice on the show, to now, it somewhat fully being rebooted & now even young kids know of the terror that flaps in the night & it's not uncommon to see people wearing Darkwing Duck shirts at cons like I remember James Silvani getting excited seeing me approach his booth with a Darkwing Duck shirt on & now, that's common place, I've even met & talked to multiple Darkwing cosplayers. This is something I have been waiting so long for, I can't wait to see what they do with what has been established in the future, I hope so much that it leads to a spinoff, I will be so loyal & watching every episode as it airs then seeing it over & over & over again, I do so very much hope it leads to a spinoff.

Those Dark Wing Duck trading cards were a bit of an unfired Chekov's gun IMO.

I really thought they were going to accidentally get dropped into the Ramrod and that's why the Fearsome Four would appear.

They were easter eggs: the number on each card is the episode that villain appeared in the original series.

I have truly enjoyed every episode of Season 3 so far, but this episode, was like living my childhood over again. It was new and refreshing, but also had so many easter eggs. Every nod kept me smiling ear to ear the entire episode. The creative team on Ducktales has really laid in some exceptional character development. I can't wait to see the ( hopefully ) eventual Disney Afternoon revival, or whatever comes next from this series. I'm just ready to GET DANGEROUS all over again!

I think in this iteration DW is a super hero. He's super durable. He still feels the pain, that's the fun, but he's darn near unbreakable.

Some people might see launchpad calleing himself the Uncle dismisses that some interpret him more as a 2nd father figure in ducktales but you have to remember Launch pad has a lot more experience of the uncle being the father figure in an adventure family. He references Scrooge who appears to have raised Donald an Della and Donald who raised the triplets so being the uncle means a lot more in his point of view.

@19:49 The creators have already said they intended for this to be a backdoor pilot for the return of the Disney Afternooniverse.

I would love to see a reality hopping version of DuckTales. Like you still in Saint Bernard but all of his villains come from different realities not only can you have him fight classic darkwing villains like that, we can also have him fight villains from different TV shows that haven't been introduced.

Since Della Duck is around as a pilot, she can easily fill Launchpad's role when he goes off on his adventures with Drake and Gosalyn so there are plenty of cast members to spread between both stories.
