Laserdisc Collection Part 51: August 2023 Standard and Late Release titles

My latest batch of Laserdisc finds all from local stores and some massive recent lots traded in. All of these (save one) were purchased by me for around a dollar or less amazingly. Especially a number of very uncommon late release titles on the format.

Thank you for your laser disc update Spencer very interesting and most informative I have the Same Mulholland Falls disc and it is a very good film very we’ll acted and an interesting story the AC-3 soundtrack is amazing. Firestorm is also quite good and feel is an underrated action film it looks and sounds great and I can also recommend the Hi Lo Country probably one of Woodys best films highly entertaining and well acted . Oh gosh thanks! I try! Ever since we talked and you mentioned Terminal Velocity I’ve been wanting to rewatch it, I was happy to finally find the Laserdisc in good shape. Never thought I’d find any of these late releases admittedly.

The Field's a pretty decent film, but Richard Harris is beyond magnificent in it. I consider it his best-ever performance.

Jesse James was quite well done. I have the DVD, and like you haven't watched it in a really long time They Won't Believe Me is quite a trip. Can't help falling for Jane Greer every time lol. The Violent Men too??? Fantastic! (Guess I should have waited til the end of the video to respond 😁)Just saw it again on TCM. IMO it's not a great Western but is wonderfully photographed, with plenty of wide angle shots. Ford is great too- he's quite serious in this. Love Stanwyck but her character IIRC is not in the book by Hamilton, which I highly recommend if you like to read Westerns.

Mask of Zorro was pressed by Pioneer US, which is why the defect rate is low.

Could you please do a video on disc rot? I’ve always wanted to get into LDs but rot has always scared me since it seems so prevalent

Sure that’s probably a good idea. It’s actually not very difficult to avoid rot once you know the basic parameters. The big thing are the plants most associated with rot-the big one being DADC USA that made most Sony Columbia disc releases. Basically, if there’s any film you’re interested in you can look it up on the Laserdisc database and there’s actually a rot report section where users can report degrees of Laserdisc rot. That’s how it’s easy to keep track of which ones you really want to avoid because they’re pretty much critical routers and you’ll never find a copy without rot. The other way to avoid rot on bad titles is to look for specific pressings from other plants if they exist or getting the Japanese version which won’t have rot.

You seem to really know your stuff on this subject and it would be awesome to get a 101 course in players, discs, etc. Retro tech always have odd and interesting quirks regular folks don’t know about, analog audio and auto-flip feature come to mind. Thanks for your work!

@@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader , just got my Definitive collection with the making of trilogy and it has minor rot throughout, All sides with some rot except Star Wars, which does have one rotted side. And 1 of the sides of the making of discs is rotten. For some reason unknown to me my first issue Japan set of Definitive with creative impulse is completely pristine. I mean its not major and i did get a very good price. Even if the rot is like a 1. I'm one of those who has to have a rot free copy and perfect OBI.

The Laserdisc pressing of drop zone was pretty nice and had a THX stamp on it and a 5.1 track… But boy was I really wondering what I was watching!

Since you know a lot about film and laserdisc i thought i would ask. Do you know when the last pan and scan transfers for Star Trek III and IV were done in the 80s? 90s'? I looked into it and there are none worldwide on DVD beyond a couple 4:3 letterbox ones. So i assume VHS and laserdisc were the last. I even looked on blam entertainment. I have Generations Letterbox and Insurrection Letterbox, and Undiscovered Country and they are the same as the laserdisc master.

Later pan and scan transfers are kinda hard to nail down. Usually they would just make them from the latest video master when doing a reissue but sometimes they were just re-issue an older pan and scan master and not make a new one.
