If I understand right most of Hollywood uses 2k because of CGI and the cost per frame is to high as well as 30 to 100 Hours per frame to render for 4k. Most are upscaled to 4k. The older movies are not as difficult to do. Good Video. Keep Collecting😎

I’m pushing well over 100 4K titles. Quite a bit are “double dips” but I’m a lot more selective in terms of upgrading titles. The Matrix 4K is my favorite because it’s the original color scheme, just as I first saw it back in 1999.

The original 1995 Ghost in the Shell actually has a 4K Blu-Ray release in Japan only, but it does seem to include English audio and subtitles. It's a far better film than the 2017 live-action one if you aren't aware.

I only have one 4K Blu-Ray and it absolutely blew me away and I would recommend: _It's a Wonderful Life_ It is the sharpest I've ever seen it, and the HDR is spectacular. It makes me wish that more black and white movies were done in 4K

I'm not really a big fan of 4K discs. One of the big reasons for me to own physical copies is the special features which 4K discs don't typically have room for. Blu-ray 1080p is usually good enough for me.

Just a quick note about Blade Runner: The Atmos mix has lots of added sound effects layered over top which were not present in the old Blu-ray's 5.1 mix, and there's also compression present in smokier scenes during HDR mode. Something of a nuisance but still a big step up from a Blu-ray authored in 2007 in VC-1

let me explain it simpler...the reasion most movies are only 2k is becasue of cgi..if amovie has hevey cgi its going to b 2k...also no mention of the audio on each disc when wether or not the disc has a Atmos track or not is the biggest selling point for a lot of buyers

Most superhero/special fx films will be upscales on 4k UHD as the vfx are rendered in 2k, as a render in 4k costs much more money, so a film.might be shot in 4k/6k etc but it will be mastered in 2k because of fx. This won't change in the future unless studios start rendering vfx in 4k. Pretty much all sfx films are upscales, inc The Last Jedi which you show

russell22w almost true. A lot of movies have SFX done in 2k, but the movie is Color corrected and finished in 4K (like The Last Jedi). Having the effects upscaled is not such a large problem, Its when the live action thats recorded at 6,5 or 8K is colorcorected and finished with a 2k Digital Intermediate (and or upscaling the effects) that’s the problem. And that’s happening with a lot of digital shot movies these days. And also why a lot of 35mm/70mm movies are true 4K on UHD discs, because they scan the already finished movie at 8 K and downscale it to 4K. I would wish that studios would just upscale the effects and create 4K DI’s...

In theory I'd have no problem with cgi rendered to film, like on something like the Lawnmower Man. But for a digital master that is rendered from constituent parts (that include 4k+ video and polygons that can be drawn at indefinite resolution) there is no excuse for upscaling. What the heck. I guess, maybe, only if the increased color depth is worth it.

@@StephenAnderson98403 There may be no excuse but there are two simple reasons: It's cheaper in 2k and people don't seem to notice it in the cinema. So why would studios change anything? 4k TVs actually are the best reason but people don't buy that many uhd blu rays. In the end it's the people's fault for not really investing in 4k.

If you are far away you will only see slight differences. However the HDR makes it worth it in any case, if the quality of the picture is important to you.

Very impressive collection, Oliver! Some of my favourite 4K discs are Gladiator, Unforgiven and Blade Runner, outstanding films with outstanding masters. So many damn upscales from modern releases. Also, I am VERY glad you noticed the difference in sound quality on Jurassic Park, I thought I was the only one! Thanks for the tip, I'll try that now. JP3 on 4K is worth checking out if you're interested; more organic and pronounced colours, with less artificial picture sharpness and less noise. Also, I know you're not a fan of The Lost World, but I can say from comparison that it's the best 4K release of the original Jurassic movies, much stronger than the first film.

Terminator 2 looks stunning in 4k on my OLED setup. Cameron wanted this film to look like it was shot on digital and the UHD delivers fully - the weakest disc in your collection is probably Jurassic Park. Also checkout Alien 40th anniversary 4K - great disc.

There's a bit of confusion over this. I studied 3D film making and one important rule is to have no digital noise for 3D. They used the refined version for the 2D 4K version.

Not sure what your source or player is or the TV. I ll say again T2 looks stunning on my setup, very clean, grain free (3D transfer) and not artificial in any way, it simply makes it look like it was shot on digital (think older Red Epic/ Dragon or Arri Alexa LF). The critics got this disc wrong.

Something about newer movies being heavy with their cgi makes them extremely hard and timeconsuning to render or master in 4k. That's why we get a lot of 2k upscales. Please current me of I'm wrong as I'm new to the whole 4k format.

One of the most impressive upgrades on a 4K movie I've bought was an unlikely one...Evil Dead 2. Honestly looks excellent, massive improvement over previous versions. The original Evil Dead looks the best it's looked as well, but is rougher and lower budget, so don't expect a showcase for your 4K telly. Dog Soldiers also just got a release in Germany. On the face of it, it's not a brilliant release due to the disc having no HDR, but it's still the best version of the movie that can be had in a home release. The previous DVD's and blu rays all had pretty big problems with colour grading, then the Scream Factory version had an awful, blown out and crushed restoration from a crappy negative. The German digibook sorts out all of that and puts out a no nonsense version of the film that delivers a great home version at last. Expensive for what it is, but if you love the movie, it's absolutely worth it.

Anthony Patterson Depends on your viewing distance. If you’re say more than 50 inches away from your 50 inch screen, you won’t notice the added detail as much. HDR however looks good on any size screen, as long as the HDR grading has been done well of course.

OBLIVION is a great movie with an unforgettable score and it looks amazing, especially in 4k but the features are great too. There is a feature where you can watch the movie with just the isolated score. That’s my bag and understand that’s not for everyone.

Very true about extra content on new releases being slim and crap - kind of only get loads of stuff by boutique releases like Arrow Video and Scream Factory - It puts me off buying new movies as I feel like they'll double dip and release a better version one day.

I have thought of another suggestion for a movie that you could review. = yet another partially forgotten but great movie. James Cameron's Avatar 2009. Though it is a movie with lots of clichés and sadly unsatisfactory replies, I still feel it's a great movie, with several good sides and a classic story that we will always retell in various forms. Either way, Avatar was a passionate project, created in the love and art of Cameron to tell a good story. And I respect Avatar for this. Since it is now more than 10 years ago, the outgrowth and the sequels finally come, I think Avatar could be an interesting movie of making a review by you. Thanks. Hope to hear from you.

The new soundmix is also a good reason to get many of these, not just the picture quality. Like the new dts x mix on independence day or the new dolby atmos mix on blade runner and the matrix which blows the old blu ray soundtracks out of the water👍

I saw this in another video here. The reason, many of the new movies seem to be 4k-upscales are the CG effects. Apparantly it's too costly and time consuming to render the effects better than 2k. So anything pretty new and effects heavy is probably going to be an upscale.

I've got a couple of 4k disc for Blade Runner, the new Halloween, and those John Carpenter films released by Studio Canal last year but nothing to play them on. It's daunting thinking about collecting films for a whole new format after I've invested so much in blurays. That's a massive fucking shame to hear that the new release of Terminator 2 looks bad- I saw the 3d version in theatres a few years back and I thought it looked decent - when will they get it right on home video!?

Hi oliver i just picked up ghostbusters e.t and superman for about 15 quid each i enjoyed e.t with my tru motion on and like you superman is also my fav film right next to the first back to the future me been born in 76 i was lucky to see these great films first time around i would love to see a 4k superman 3 as its never looked too good over the years . James Gunn is coming back to write and direct Guardians 3. Turned out Disney never actually fired him, and were just waiting for the heat to die down. It's supposed to be out in 2022.

James Gunn is making the next Guardians film as he was re-hired by Disney. I usually still buy 3D films when the choice is available over 4K like with the Marvel films. Like you say one day when Disney decides to release them in true 4K I'll buy them then.

asiboy29 The movies he criticised are all known for being dodgy with HDR. Just because the film looks bright and colourful doesn’t mean it looks accurate. It’s easy to oversaturate a film.

Nope your not the only one, Ive been impressed with some 4K I've seen so far but it hasn't blown me away like Blu Ray did. For instance I can quite happily watch a blu ray without any issues, but when I started watching blu Ray's I could never go back to DVD because it was such a huge leap.

Almost all modern films that are shot digitally are shot between 2-4K. A lot of big budget SFX films are shot at 4K but mastered in 2k, using the extra resolution to help the digital compositing (similar to how films used to shoot 70mm for optical compositing). We’re just now starting to see some digital 8k cameras coming into use but Hollywood always takes a while to adopt new tech. This would allow for 8k acquisition and true 4K delivery.

To be clear, reiterating what Oliver mentioned, there are more benefits to 4K UHD discs then just pure resolution boosts. Better A/V compression and wider color space can make a huge difference compared to 1080 Blu-Ray.
