For Everyone wondering how to hook this up to a legacy (old) tstat. I just spent the last 6 hours troubleshooting. I'm not an electrician or HVAC professional, but this is what worked for me. In my area (Toronto, Canada ), inspectors want to see the smoke detector cut off the furnace's main power. You can do this in 3 ways. Tie into the furnaces wall switch, door switch or main fuse. I went with the wall switch because it was near my furnace, and I didn't want to splice any wires in my furnace. 1st turn off the breaker 2nd wire constant 120v to the 120v terminals on the d4120. You can grab this off the wall switch if available or any nearby plug. Don't forget to connect ground to the ground terminal also. 3rd wire another 120v line from the comm and NC aux contact off the D4120 and send it to the furnace wall switch. 4th, unplug one of the leads off your furnace wall switch and marette it to the lead coming from NC. 5th take the lead coming from COMM and attach it to the furnace wall switch. 6th have a drink because you just saved yourself 5 and half hours of work. Turn everything on and test The smoke detector will now act like another wall switch and cut main power to the furnace. Just like if you went to your furnace switch and switched it off. Pretty straightforward now that I know, but God it's so hard to find information online about this. Btw I used 2 14/2 bx wires for this but I'm sure you can do it with 1 14/3 bx wire if you grab power and switched off the same wall switch but I didn't have any 14/3 bx. Again I'm not an Electrician or hvac professional. Best of luck

The air flow is supposed to hit the intake sampling tube first with the exhaust tube down stream. I'm pretty sure you should of turned the duct detector 90 degrees on that vertical duct so the tubes line up vertical. The way you installed would be ideal on a horizontal duct run
@TECTubefilms
@TECTubefilms Жыл бұрын
We understand your logic, but that is not a requirement of the installation. So long as the holes of the sampling tube are facing into the airflow, the pressure difference will be created to move air thru the assembly. With the air entering directly into those holes, you have velocity pressure on the sampling tube but not on the exhaust tube.

Commercial code requires the detector in the return duct. Is the a reason or code for residential to mount it in the supply duct? Thanks
@TECTubefilms
@TECTubefilms 3 жыл бұрын
Different commercial building codes have different requirements: IMC - requires RETURN duct smoke detection for 2,000 CFM (if over 15,000, then both return and supply are required) NFPA - requires SUPPLY duct smoke detection for 2,000 CFM (if over 15,000, then both return and supply are required) Note: if your jurisdiction follows both IMC and NFPA, then above 2,000 CFM you need both a supply and return detector
@TECTubefilms
@TECTubefilms 3 жыл бұрын
There is some logic to putting it in the return on a commercial system. When the RTU is in full economizer mode, a fire in the building would not bring smoke back to the detector if it was located in the supply duct. There is also some logic to putting it the supply. If the fire is inside the air handler, such as an electrical issue with the motor, then a return smoke sensor won't see that.
@TECTubefilms
@TECTubefilms 3 жыл бұрын
In this video, we put it on the supply duct because we do not have much return duct on the systems in our labs. It is just 90 degree elbow and 2 feet of duct. In his own house, Ryan has the smoke detector installed on the return.

I see you mounted the sampling and exhaust tubes on the same plane. I have mounted them like this as well but after reading the cut sheet it says “the unit can be mounted vertically”,which I would assume would be for a vertically run duct like you have here, “ as long as the exhaust tube is downstream of the sampling tube”. My question is have you ever used a manometer to test if the differential pressure is where the cut sheet says it should be. Basically I’m asking does it really matter if the exhaust tube is downstream or not? Without testing with a snow bomb or manometer it’s hard to say. The jobs I’m on I can test the operation yet because the units will be shipped to site without being completely functioned tested.

@TECTubefilms
@TECTubefilms Жыл бұрын
Ryan explained it in the video, but the orientation of the holes on the sampling tube is what matters and what forces air into the chamber. The orientation of the exhaust tube and of the controller itself does not make a difference.
@Big0veralls
@Big0veralls Жыл бұрын
@@TECTubefilms yeah I get that and basically what tech support said confirming what I already know to be the case. The thing is when the literature doesn’t spell it out as such and you get an over zealous QA/QC guy at a place like I’m at right now it can be hard explaining it to them. I have one right now telling me it needs to be in the center of the duct and since it’s redundant with two on the supply and two on the fresh air intake duct that they should be offset instead of inline with one another etc. The two are on the same plane on a horizontal duct about 6” higher than center on a 18” tall duct. Plenty of air flowing across it. But he wants to argue we need to drop one down to cover more of the duct. I just said you waited until 23rd out of 26 systems to bring it up. They’ve all been signed off so the end user or the company we work for will be paying for any changes any of the other systems that have duct smokes not directly in the middle. Still waiting to see what comes of that. I’m installing these for our fire system. Mechanical was lucky enough not to have to mess with it.

I am interested in Commercial applications. Does the smoke detector could be reset from a Building Automation System or code requires manual reset? In my case, we have a smoke evacuation that would purge the smoke in the space. Thanks!
@TECTubefilms
@TECTubefilms 3 жыл бұрын
Duct smoke detectors in commercial applications are regulated by both NFPA and IMC. It is probable that manual reset is required by code. Unrelated to code, you may be able to reset from a BAS. Most duct smoke detectors have an option for remote reset... although it is usually a keyed switch, not a BAS. Something like this www.systemsensor.com/en-us/Pages/RTS151KEY.aspx Although, we do not think anyone is going to want the liability of resetting a smoke detector remotely from a BAS. They are going to want someone to physically go into the space and visually verify that the fire event is over.

@TECTubefilms
@TECTubefilms 4 жыл бұрын
You would not be able to follow all of the steps we showed in this video if you have an ecobee. It would not have any of the screens we show in the video to enable and configure this feature. These instructions are for Infinity, Evolution, and Ion wall controls. This does not apply to standard 24v stats like ecobee. In the case of regular thermostats, you can still wire the smoke detector for shutdown the traditional way by interrupting power. You will not get alerts emailed or text messaged out to you though.
