Watching this video reminded me of the increasing relevance of CAD in model R.C, I watch you and Peter Sriprol use many forms of CAD (3d printing, laser cutter 2d, foam board flat cutting, mixes, and even ms paint drawings you can print on paper and cut out). I think it would be helpful to the community, and interesting if you made a video or series documenting the specific methods of CAD Modeling used by flight test when developing new designs. Also I've been watching flitetest for almost 4 years, and its amazing that you've almost reached 2 million subs, keep up the great work!

Something like a multiplex easy star, bixler or similar is the best to start with imho. Motor in the back so it will take a hit, and they almost fly themselves. Also good glide slope and non agressive stalls. Plus you can start with rudder + elevator only and then add the ailerons when you advance.
@linecraftman39073 жыл бұрын
just buy or build one of the simpler flight test kits, super simple to build and most importantly repair. I'd say go with two channel (rudder and elevator) dihedral top wing aircraft(they have really stable flight charastiritics) They're really easy to fly and won't overwhelm you at first. However if you have absolutely no experience flying or don't even have a buddy who could help you start flying, start off flying in the simulator, like real flight or something. Make sure you either connect your transmitter or a cheap simulator transmitter so that you know what flying with sticks feels like

I really like the safe features of the Horizon Sport Cub S 2. I highly recommend it for a first purchase. Comes with everything you need. I bought the Horizon Champ first (about $80 on sale). I figured it was inexpensive enough that if I crash I wouldn't be too broken hearted. I have learned a lot and repaired and modified it a lot. (made the engine cowling removable, added an aluminum brace inside the wing foam, tape for the battery). No ailerons though. Was a little bit of a learning curve going from the rudder on the right stick for the Champ to the rudder on the left (and aileron on right) with the Sport Cub S 2. One of the reasons I kinda wish I just got the Sport Cub S 2 first. But I do love the Champ for it's simplicity (it can't handle the wind very well). My wife bought me the Horizon Sport Cub S 2 during black Friday for like $75. Super deal, normally $139.99. I almost wish I started with this one. The safe mode saves me from so much, and really helps in the wind. It does drain the battery faster (the Champ battery never ran out on me, I got bored or crashed before it ever ran out). Spare battery. Was like $6-8. Works on both the planes. Both planes come with all you need to fly.

I'd love to see a 3d printed plane in which you only replace the structural parts with 3d print parts and cover it like if you were covering a wooden frame
@Reman19753 жыл бұрын
That's not a bad idea. Someone could go through a balsawood model and replicate it's structure as 3D printed sub assembly's. They could also tweak the infill to add strength where needed, and lightness where strength isn't such a big concern.
@Reman19753 жыл бұрын
@@U_Geek I'd think it could be made lighter than traditionally built balsa plane kits, because where those tend to have fuselage frameworks built up mainly from one or two different thicknesses of wood to keep costs down, 3D printed frame parts could be made to whatever dimention or infill density would be most suited to the loads that perticular beam or brace is likely to encounter. You wouldn't end up adding extra weight bracing an area thats under minimal load with balsa of the same dimentions that you used for strengthening heavily stressed areas. On built up balsa wings you usually use the same thickness of wood for all the ribs, but if you 3D printed them you could thin out the middle of them, and still have a wide return lip around the edges to fix the covering to. The spars could also be made with less and less infill as they extended further away from the center as they're supporting almost no weight at the tips (except when you crash. :D) because the stress builds up progressively the closer to the center it gets. You could also add thin diagonal bracing between the wing ribs to greatly increase ridgidity without adding the huge amount of extra weight you see with balsa built wings. Dispite 3D printed plastics not being as strong per gram as balsa and glue, being able to only place material where its needed would save a lot of weight.
