Ductless Mini Split Cleaning And Maintenace (Complete Tear Down)

Here is a short tutorial on how to take apart a Mitsubishi ductless mini split for cleaning or repairs. It is a pretty simple process once you have seen it done a few times. This is the process I use to deep clean these units, general maintnenace or perform many repairs. Maintenace on a ductless mini split is critical to keep up its performance.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! Mitsubishi Mr Slim indoor unit MSZ-GE15NA line flow fan removal for cleaning mold and dust. You have NO idea how long we spent trying to find out how to remove this damn thing. Useless maintenance manuals that tell you to disassemble a bunch of circutry, private videos, videos about newer models that aren't relevant. We have three of these things and I was dreading this so much. This saved my day. Thank you!!!

I have watched sosososo many of these kinds of videos and this IS BY FAR THE BEST VIDEO! Great advice about cleaning. I could never figure out how to undo the hose to the drain pipe...shows how to do that. Shows also how to remove the little black fins, which are impossible to thoroughly clean unless completely removed. I have taken these things apart so many times coz for some reason they get moldy and I have a mold allergy. I used to take out the blower wheel (an absolute pain to do) but with this video that is no longer necessary. I also bought an Innovation low pressure power washer and a Speed Clean bib that makes all of this so much easier. Please don't ever remove this video, I would be lost without it. Thanks again so much and btw you are a great teacher! :)

I am so grateful for this video - so much better than others I have found!! I have a GL series, installed about three years ago. When IU called the company for an annual service- the kid came out and for $300 only cleaned the plastic filter, then told me I could have a coil cleaning for ANOTHER $300! So I got a kit to do it myself, but I wasn't able to get to the blower and back area. Other videos weren't in depth enough, and also the GL series has wires running on the drip tray, which concerned me. Thank you very much , my unit is now clean! One question though, I do get a gooey, clear, thick mucous type buildup at the bottom of the coils and in the drip tray (Like the stuff dripping from the mouths in the Alien movies). Any suggestions on how I can combat this stuff, and or keep the drip tray running smooth. It frequently backs up, and I am pretty sure it is just not quite level, but the goo is an issue as well.

Good to know about removing the louver motors. I would always unplug the wiring from the board. Mitsubishi, and Fujitsu are by far the easiest to completely disassemble and clean.

A very detailed and complete video. Do you have recommendation with which kind of detergents should be used for coil cleaning? Is expanding foam (Mizu) effective? Or, you can recommend any liquid? Does it require using pressure washer or, just a garden hose instead& Thank you

Thank you for watching. Just a garden hose will work fine. No pressure washer. Original Dawn and water mixed in a spray bottle will work just fine for cleaning.

Dawn is just a popular brand of dish/hand soap degreaser. Mix it with water to clean the unit.

Comes apart just as he describes, I did not have to remove the pan to clean it, and the clips that hold the cover on at the top take more force than you would think to remove.

I found the trick though! Unclipping it was not possible for me just by pushing down, I had to push down AND pull away from the wall. To make this much easier I started with the left side so that I could push down with one hand and pull the plastic forward at the same time with my other hand. Once this clip came undone, it made it much easier to push down and pull forward on the other clips (going from left to right moving one clip at a time). I found it much harder (impossible) to start with the middle clips. For the bottom lip of the unit, I had to push down (I thought that I could just pull it out after removing the 2 screws, but it was not the case).

I can clean that unit excellently with nothing more than the plastic cover off and the filters out. I dont need to take the whole unit apart like that unless I'm changing a part. @Bdpjev We charge more than $150 to do this sort of deep cleaning when it is required it is absolutely worth it unless your customers enjoy breathing this garbage. We've been installing these system for 20 years and counting. If you think you can clean this as effectively without disassembly post that video. Lee Johnson these units need very low static to operate properly. I have seen a 1" media filter attachment made for some but do not know how well it would work once they start to clog. I have also seen uv lights made for these...does anyone have any feedback on how well they work?

UV kills germs/bacteria buildup on said junk when powered OFF/blower not on... blower on 24/7? =JUNK, when air flowing to cool building = JUNK maybe 10% bacteria/germs killed, the flow is just too great. without calculating it you'd need roughly 20' x 20' room of multiple HEAVY DUTY UV light to kill anything flowing past @ air flow rates of today in HAVC/R ... no I am not an engineer, but I quickly guest-i-mate things :)))))) which is most always 250% better than the "collegiate trained clowns" that are crunching the supposed real math and designing the garbage. time for a great depression again, too many fools and and world wide conglomerates into the singular cookie jar ;) housing makrte was #1 sign of impending long term downslide of doom, in-which they are attempting to play off............

The unit i have is remarkably similar but though its a daikin. Freeing the coil while it’s hanging on to refrigerant lines is a definite thing that makes this tear down seem a bit of a risk (regardless of the actual damger). First off though, if you can’t access the breaker or the switch to depower the unit it’s irresponsible to start toying with it!! A lot of places have that breaker on a roof, up an outside wall… it’s not designed to be user-accessible

Frankly I’m happier to let a job like this be done by a professional, but the responses i got were miserable. One guy came out, couldn’t find a parking in 5 mins (but he “knew the area??!) and then had left, before i had time to check my phone. lol. There are lots of home maintenance i will do if pricing or availability don’t suit me. 🙂

Why not instead of removing the grates don't you just pull out on the clips in the middle ( at 2:02) and both the grates and the louvers pull outward? Do you find it easier just to remove the grates?

Landlords are the WORST at factoring in regular maintenance costs into the cost of these units. They don’t clean them, collections of people pass through the premises… the place will become a danger to health, but the units die because of the maintenance not done, they just replace it then.
