Nice video! The fans use a device called a thermoelectric generator, or Peltier module. Basically, it's a grid of semiconductors sandwiched between two ceramic plates - that's the white thing you see in that slot. When one side is hot and the other side is cool, the transfer of heat through the semiconductors generates a small amount of current (the Peltier effect). The amount of power generated is proportional to the heat differential, so it's important to keep one side cool. That's why there's heatsink in front of the fan. When the stove heats up the lower half, the upper half is still at room temperature. That differential is enough to start the fan. Then, the fan is able to keep the top relatively half cool by wicking heat through the heatsink and blowing it out away from the stove, maintaining the differential. It's a neat use of the technology, since the whole point is to blow heat away from the stove anyways. Same technology that's used in a Bio Lite stove, which is a camp stove that allows you to charge a phone. Like a gas powered generator, you can also run a thermoelectric generator backwards. By applying a voltage over the output leads, you can actually create a temperature differential. This will cause one side to get very hot while the other side gets very cold. For this reason, Peltier modules are also used in very small fridges. They aren't as efficient as traditional vapor-compression refrigerators, but much, much smaller. They can be as small as a nickel and used to keep a single beer can cool. For this reason they are also called thermoelectric coolers, or TEC modules. Anyways, going to clean my stove now.

Great video today! I do one more check because I use a 43 year old Vermont casting. The check is simple. To check how air tight the stove is. Have a fire then shut down the air to make that good fire nock right down. If the fire goes to nothing great. If it does not the fire is getting air from someplace and that needs to be addressed. Door seals most of the time. It’s important so you can maintain a safer stove.

Fold up a paper towel into 4ths. Dampen one side in a cup of water or with a spray bottle. Touch the damp paper into a pile of the white fly ash. Run your glass surface lightly with the damp ash. The glass will be cleaner than you’ve ever seen before 👍.

@@billhamilton7524 I respectfully disagree sir. You can rub a wet paper towel on woodstove sooted glass until your fingers cramp from fatigue and the glass won’t be as clean as if you had included a little ash at the beginning 🤓

Nice vid Jake. When I clean my Fireplace Insert, I use the Shop vacuum from the outside of the house. I bought a 25 foot hose. Having the vacuum outside makes for a much better cleanup. I’ll cover the opening on the window with a couple of old bath towels. Enjoy the stove this season🪵👍

Thoughts from an IM3100 owner: 1. Take off right side panel. There is a flapper at bottom back. Open flapper and Vacuum in there. Tons of ash falls through those two holes and into that area (clogging it long-term). 2. Might shop for Simond Store Ceramic fiber blanket (150" long) for replacement blanket material. 3. Might shop for Lynn Manufacturing Replacement Quadrafire Baffle Board when you want to replace that. 4. Attempt to slide new dollar bill past gasket. That is a fairly decent test. 5. You can get an external air kit that pulls air from the outside into the bottom back. Baffles direct the air to the two vents on the right side (bar vents with holes and the back two holes). Prevents you from using heated air for combustion. Edit: Maybe not... You have your air vent levers in a different spot than me. So maybe the info needs a small tweak. Cya! Thx for vid!
