Thanks a lot for making these lessons! There is not much information to be found about playing the duduk in english. Although it seemed a very difficult instrument, I was able to play almost all the notes in tune on the first day and I'm noticing a lot of progression every day. Still struggling a bit with the notes E and higher. Learning without a teacher is difficult, but these videos are helping me a lot to get me started and keep me interested. Without them, I think it would be impossible to learn, especially with all the many subtle techniques involved to get a rich tone which are not obvious when watching other musicians play.

Benoit, you are absolutely right. Duduk is not the easiest instrument to play and it takes time to master it. Keep going though. If you need help or have any questions, you can always reach out.

Thank you so much for the lesson . It is a real privilege to learn from you. Thank you . I have just purchased a Duduk with three reeds ,but am having quite some difficulty to get the reeds to vibrate and emit a sound. I have to use a lot of force with my breath with just enough lip pressure to stop the air from escaping around the lips. Is it because they are hard reeds and will be easier to play the more I practice .
@Sarkamler

Great to hear! It's not only about the reeds, but also your embouchure is not yet strong enough. Keep practicing and the results will come. Good luck on your musical journey!

Thank you so much for this Master Class. I received a duduk as a Christmas present after telling my husband I longed to play it. I have never played an instrument in my life (and have never really wanted to), but the duduk speaks to my soul. I watch this class every night to give me inspiration as I practice. My motto this year is to be brave enough to suck at something new! I certainly am not any good at even making sound yet, but I'm getting better bit by bit, with this video reminding me of all the details. I will contact you for lessons when I can reliably produce notes!

Hi Sarkmaler. I'm an Aussie, currently in Armenia for a few months because one of my Armenian friends said I must come over and visit this beautiful country. I'm really enjoying my stay in Yerevan with the occasional visit to Dilijan etc. I was in the Vernissage markets on the weekend and was looking at all the duduks. Most are cheap and for ornamental purposes, but there were some professional ones that caught my eye. I play piano, guitar and the Uke, but have never played a wind instrument. I absolutely love the sound of the duduk as I don't think there is a more soulful sounding instrument out there. I'm seriously contemplating taking up the instrument and perhaps these master classes will be enough - I'm not sure yet. Is there anyone you can recommend that could give me some lessons (in English) whilst I am in Yerevan? There was an elderly gentleman and his grandson (in a separate stall) that were selling the professional ones. They claim to be one of very few manufacturers of Duduks in Armenia. They were very friendly and have offered to let me see them make their duduks. Unfortunately they don't do lessons in English. Thanks in advance.

Parev. I've had my duduk for years now, but have not had a lesson and was worried about how to play correctly, so this video is very helpful. I play clarinet and am fighting my embouchure, and also getting a bad headache. Should I assume the headache means I'm blowing incorrectly?

@@Sarkamler 🤔 I think what I'm trying to get at is that I think I might be over-blowing to try and get the correct sound out of the duduk. Or, blowing wrong. Since I don't get a headache playing the clarinet, sax, pennywhistle or recorder, I think I'm just not getting the mouth position on the duduk correctly, but maybe I am wrong. Oh, well.

Try to wet the reed with your mouth a little bit and then parda should stay where it is. Don't wet it under a running water though...

Good evening! I received my duduk recently, and I have an issue with the highness of the sound. For exemple, when I want to play an A, it is a G# that is coming out naturally, and I have to press a little bit on the reed to reach the A. Is it normal for a beginner and I will figure it out with work? The position of te lips are very difficult, it can come from it. Thank you for your videos, it helps a lot!!
@Sarkamler
@Sarkamler 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Martin, thank you for your comment - it is quite possible. Many factors can play a role here: a) is the instrument professionally tuned or not, b) reed quality c) opening of the reed, d) lip position, etc. A professional instructor can help you resolve these issues.

Thank you for this series. I am wondering how do you store your duduk? In what kind of case? I'm worried that as the weather is getting hotter and more humid it may make my duduk become out of tune if I don't store it properly.
@Sarkamler
@Sarkamler 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Haleema, there is no need for special case to store duduk. Exposure to excessive humidity might sometimes develop mold inside of the instrument, so always keep it open air (if you have a case just leave it open) so the instrument breathes and dries as necessary. If your instrument is professionally made you should not have any problems with tuning because of humidity.
