Watched this back in the day the way it was intended to be watched, on our family's 19 inch color tv with crappy speakers. Watching it now with the frame opened up on a 65 inch tv, with an AV system was glorious.

I remember when I was 12 years old in 1987 I just got home from skateboarding and Duel was on TV, I sat there and watched the whole movie! Even being 12LOL Good movie, timeless.

Watched it for the first time the other day. You can definitely see the work of someone that understood cinematic storytelling techniques for maintaining mystery and building tension in various ways to keep the runtime fresh. Felt like a "big" budget student film from a very very talented student

For those that may not know, author Richard Matheson was hassled by a huge truck for some time on his way back from a golf game with a friend the day John Kennedy died. He wrote the short story and Playboy printed it. He was very impressed what Spielberg did with it. 🚚

I highly recommend the steelbook version. The art on the front and back are beautiful! This is one of my favorite movies that I grew up watching a lot because it was always on TV. Edit: The TV version that's "HD" is an AI upscale so that's why it looks weird.

Love this movie. I got the Gruv steelbook. I always thought of Duel as Jaws on land. The constant tension and buildup is great, Steven new what he was doing from day 1!!!

I actually prefer the TV version... Which, of course, you knew, that the film was originally made as a TV movie, but was so compelling, that Universal expanded it, with additional scenes filmed... They'd got a replacement truck, car, etc... to fill out the run time for a European release, not released theatrically in the US... So, as viewed as an art process... the original, intended TV version is the most relatable... which I tend to embrace, much more than a redux, or "director's cut"... The original film is the piece, from my point of view... And I think in some ways, the original is a better watch. Thanks for the review... Liked.

First, I'm sure you've realized by now, his name is not David 😊 Secondly, I'm also surprised you didn't get the steelbook since it's only $25. Gruv even has a listing on ebay for that price. You're right about the 4k looking so good. If you watch until the end credits are over, the tv version automatically kicks. Such a contradiction in quality. I wonder if they airbrushed the UFO in the desert shot out or left it in, it's in the older DVD releases at around the 60 minutes mark (for the R2 I have) a white streak shooting quickly across the screen.

FYI: My expensive "Special Edition" copy of this, coming to me via Walmart, will arrive next week. At the time, I wanted the steelbook of the movie, and thought the "Special Edition" was the only way to get it. And damn you, Spielberg, if you can Dolby Atmos this prized baby of yours, why not give Close Encounters the same audio upgrade? This is going back a way, but I recall the guts of this movie were "repurposed" (reused), for an episode of the "The Incredible Hulk." And Spielberg was not happy about it.

In UK only 4K disc. Normally when the US gets a only 4K edition we in europ have an blu ray disc and digital code. But the standard edition 0f Duel in pre order just has a 4K disc, no blu ray and no slipcover... does anyone know why..?

Adam just got the Blu-ray this week and watched it. Nothing wrong with the 1080p the picture and sound was perfect. It was in it 1.85:1 that Spielberg shoot it in. He cropped full screen for tv.

We are watching this right now in the high school film analysis class I teach, 4K and all. I agree, it’s a well crafted film, but students regard it as an artifact. I loved it as a kid seeing it on TV, and I still dig it, but I’m not so sure it has aged well, trite Mannhood theme included.

I absolutely love this film, and I was really looking forward to the 4K release of this film, especially because it had the original television version of the film. It took me a while to realize that the primary print of the film that was released on physical media for years was actually extended for theatrical distribution and was cropped to 1.85; so even though this film was on Blu Ray by the time I purchased it, I thought that the Blu Ray's aspect ratio was incorrect, so I purchased the Collector's Edition DVD. Later, I corrected this error. However, knowing that the original cut had never been released in any physical format, I continued to hope that it would be someday. Unfortunately, when I got my hands on this release, it was not without disappointment. As the reviewer states, the picture quality of the TV release is terrible, and the fact that it is on the 4K disc, and not the Blu Ray disc, was a stupid mistake on Universal's part. Because the film was only upgraded for HD, but nothing else, the TV print is very pixelated, fuzzy, and suffering from faded color. The only good thing about it is its soundtrack; the dialogue on the radio, the music, and the sound effects are all clear as a bell (at least to me). It would have been nice if they couldn't remaster the picture in 4K, then at least have remastered it in 2K, and improved the color, so that when it was put on a 4K disc, the flaws would not stand out. As for the 4K picture and sound, at times, the picture was a bit blurry, but I am going to chalk that up to the fact that that could not be helped, because it was originally shot for television, and fortunately, the blurriness was mainly during the closeups in the café. However, the upgraded soundtrack is a problem, and while it could be that I don't have a surround sound system, I was frustrated that you couldn't hear the radio, the music, and some of the louder sounds were a lot quieter than they are in the mono soundtrack, which is not on the 4K disc, but only the Blu Ray (you can't even really hear the Godzilla roar that was put in when the truck goes off the cliff on the stereo soundtrack). However, I don't know if Spielberg changed the sound mix to the film when he extended it and released it to theaters; could someone please clarify that? Despite my disappointments, I am still glad that I have this release.

Frankly, the best version of this film is the original TV Film cut. Tighter, and more suspenseful. The added scenes for the extended theatrical version take away from his isolation. Putting other characters in takes away from the one on one duel aspect and grounds the film too much. I wish the TV version was given the same TLC as the theatrical expansion. I always laugh at the obvious padding in the first few minutes of the expanded version, with the car leaving the driveway, going through the city, getting on the freeway, etc.
