Loved this movie ...it's simple but effective..the mystery of the driver never having his face revealed kept it in a somewhat creepy stage.

One fun little detail I always liked about the diner scene was that when the truck and driver are occupying Mann's thoughts the truck is so large that it takes up almost the entire window. When his mind is elsewhere like when he is talking to the waitress, the truck suddenly becomes smaller and more distant.

Carey Loftin (truck driver) was a legendary Hollywood stunt driver who worked in tons of films, including "Bullitt." There is a brief cameo of him in the diner. He IS at the counter, 2nd from right, and turns to look at Weaver just as the waitress startled him.

I saw an interview with Spielberg about this movie. One of the things he said regarding the truck "death scene". He didn't intend for the truck to reappear from the smoke and dust while it was falling. It was essentially an anomaly caught on one of the cameras. But he really the the effect and even reproduced the same effect in Jaws as the dead body of the shark reappeared from the bloody water. The spiral death of this truck is almost exactly like the spiral death of the Jaws shark.

This is one of my three all-time favorite Made-For-TV movies, along with Salem's Lot and The Night Stalker. I remember watching it when it was first on, everyone was talking about it the next day at school. And you mentioned the sound, especially at the end. Apparently the sound of the truck going over the cliff was used as part of the sound of the T-Rex in Spielburg's "Jurassic Park".

Many people don't realize that the trucker is a seriel killer, the varius plates on the front are his trophies from others he's chased down, and that the tanker is empty.
@arleighburke9095
@arleighburke9095 8 ай бұрын
The theory that the multiple plates on the truck are some sort of ‘trophies’ is false. Back in those days trucks had to display license plates for many of the states they operated in. That’s just the way it was until the inception of the cab card, making the multiple plates obsolete. but hey, it’s a fun theory.

It was a movie of the week. It was Spielberg's first big test. The studio wanted it shot on the lot. But Spielberg was told he could do it on location if he could shoot it in ten days. The studio provided him with experienced DPs and ADs, both of whom were skeptical of the young man. However, he quickly won them over. Spielberg felt irresponsible and worried as he approached the 10 day deadline. But was assured by the professionals working with him that he was doing great and no one could have finished shooting in 10 days. He shot it in 12 . There were 6 cameras set up for the truck's death. But only one camera operator followed the truck from going over the cliff all the way down, All the footage is from that camera.

It was a TV movie first then Spielberg shot extra footage to bump it’s run time to 90 minutes which was required for a theatrical release. The extra footage used a different truck as the original was destroyed in the cliff jump. One of the additional scenes was the truck trying to push the car into the train. The sound of the dying truck was reused in _Jaws_ as the sound of the dying shark. I love this film. My dad first showed it to me as a cautionary tale about road rage when I was learning to drive. Thanks for reacting to this.

I saw this movie when it originally aired as a Movie of the Week on ABC television way back when. I thought it was a very thrilling film, and still do. Just goes to show you that pure entertainment doesn't have to involve multi-million dollar special effects, just a quality story and characters that you care about. And Spielberg was good at both.

Richard Matheson adapted the script from his own short story, which was originally published in the April, 1971 issue of Playboy magazine. Matheson got the inspiration for the story when he was tailgated by a trucker while on his way home from a golfing match with friend Jerry Sohl on November 22, 1963, the same day as the John F. Kennedy assassination

Unlike other films where a psycho is chasing a car with a group of friends, having it being just the one guy adds so much to the feel to this movie, it makes you feel that it's you in that car being hunted down which adds so much on a personal level, especially when watching on your own. From how they chose the truck to interview with the stunt driver to the rattlesnake scene, I believe Dennis may have done his own stunt diving out of the way, but this is how you make great entertaining content it makes me sad and miss old Hollywood, also check out “Used Cars” with Kurt Russell I believe Spielberg was involved with that also and it is a hoot! There are people that do youtube dashcam videos today driving from his house and continuing down his exact route. Pretty much Route 14 and in the Angeles National Forest just north of Los Angeles looks all the same with many of the stops and places still there. The crashed truck (or what is left of it) is still down in the ravine. There are pictures floating around showing the rusted out remains of it all. Though it is on private land now and not really accessible.

I have a question for those watching this video. Has anyone reading this ever been in a similiar situation on the highway. Where you know that some other driver , doesn't have to be a truck driver, has it in for you and goes after you. Out there when you are on the road you are on your own. Make sure your car is in the best shape possible before going on a trip. Don't pick up some cute young thing and have her end up saying could you drop me off a little up the road please. She is a lure and there might be men waiting to take away your car and maybe your life. Don't fall for it. If you are at a truck stop or highway restraunt and some says if you are going that way can you give me a lift and offers to pay gas say maybe but how far are you going. Look at their ID. Talk to them and feel them out. Trust your gut instincts. Stay on the main highway and avoid small towns. They don't like outsiders most of the time and don't care if something bad happens to you. Good luck

David Manns' reddish/orangy car and the Truck itself make a cameo appearance in the movie Torque. As the bikers are going down the road they pass by Mann's car. one of the biker's makes a comment about the car, something like "what's up with that guy". a few seconds later they run into the truck itself. the only difference is that it doesn't have the flammable printing on the back side. Mann referred to the truck driver as Keller in the novel. On the side of the truck the name Keller was printed. but it was most likely a brand name. in an interview Spielberg said he used the animal like roar for the truck crash because he wanted to imply that there was something supernatural about the truck and it's driver. This could explain why that type of truck was able to keep up with Mann in his car. But Mann even thinks to himself that it's probably just suped up. The studio tried to interfere in the making of the movie. they wanted a big explosion at the end for the truck. but Spielberg said "NO". he wanted to show the slow death of the truck. also the shot of the truck coming out of the dust/smoke was not intended. Spielberg didn't want to show the truck emerge from the dust. but he ended up enjoying how it looked and kept it. he repeated the same scene in JAWS.

The truck had originally started out life as a single axle that had a tag along axle added to it, a 260HP 1673 CAT turbocharged engine with a 13-speed transmission, making it capable of hauling loads over 30 tons and top speeds reaching 75-80 mph. During the original filming, the crew had only one truck, so the shots of the truck falling off the cliff had to be completed in one take.

If you wondering about the filming of the movie, watch this documentary, in which Spielberg goes in detail about the entire shoot of the film, camera angles, location, etc. This is really a great and informative interview ! Since you praised the filming of the ending ~ Spielberg goes into great detail about that ! Just type in : 'Duel (1971) - A Conversation with Steven Spielberg' NB : You mentioned that he appeared somewhat of a weakling ~ not standing up for his wife ~ That's the idea Dennis Weaver wanted to give his character !
