While traveling through the desert for an appointment, the businessman David Mann passes an old and slow Peterbilt tanker truck, not knowing that he would eventually unleash a hell-ride that becomes a psychological one, always having the deadly truck in sight, whose driver longs to kill him… With “Duel” (1971) the career of the young Steven Spielberg would set its way from television to the big screen, being the foundation to his world-wide success that would ultimately be marked by 1975s “Jaws”. But before the shark learned to swim, it was a truck to terrify people around the globe. Spielberg proved that you can make everything look terrifying… if you use the right tools. Tools of a craft that he partially learned from the master of suspense himself, Alfred Hitchcock. We never see the truck driver's face, nor will we ever know what drives him to his actions. All we know is that he does everything to kill… Before Spielberg started his legendary relationship with composer John Williams, he would work with television composer Billy Goldenberg for a number of times, for example on the hit show “Columbo” and brought him to score “Duel”. Goldenberg’s unmistakable style would perfectly underline the actions on screen, with almost no melodic material and strange orchestrations to give us an unpleasant feel throughout the entire movie. Enjoy the ride!

I swear the part titled "Mann's Thoughts" sounds so closely familiar to the music played in the movie "Coma", towards the end when Dr. Harris is attempting to murder Dr. Wheeler on the operating table..

@@pressureworks "underrated" means you think something is better than the kind of attention they end up getting (whether it's bad attention or the usual case of lack thereof). In what kind of world are you living in where something can't be underrated and amazing at once? Plus, Duel is FOR SURE underrated, I mean, do you seriously expect people to know what this movie is when talking to them?

Hi, Fred! This is my favourite Spielberg movie. If anyone underestimated the television composer Billy Goldenberg ( who would become very well known, including in Brasil, for the " Kojak's Theme " ), he was certainly in for a surprise: his score for " Duel " is a work of art. He created a piece of music almost without melodies, with " Penderecki orchestrations " to generate, at same time, the mystery and an uncomfortable feeling of something " out of place " ( the car driver? The truck driver? The world?? )... An inexplicable doubt. Fantastic!! Thanks again, Fred, and nice weekend!!!

Wasn't it Billy Goldenberg who did the score for the TV movie Helter Skelter in 1976? That score was a good one.

Grande Fred. L'individuo ordinario in contesto straordinario.

Hello Milton! The very original truck, used for most of the scenes in the movie was indeed destroyed as seen in it, while driving over the cliff. But as this man explains: for some reasons there was a need for more, to shoot and add more scenes afterwards. This truck "double" used for that shots survived: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6G7pZmPhd-BaZI Best! Fred

In the factory that was Universal Studios Television at the time, the director, especially a young one like Spielberg, had little input on who he would work with. Auteurs were not suffered. Universal's attitude was that each composer or costume designer or editor was as good as the next. Content was churned out in the same way as cartoons at Hanna-Barbera across the street (Hollywood Freeway, actually). It is therefore very unlikely that Goldenberg was "brought in" by Spielberg. As a house composer at Universal, he was likely assigned. Spielberg directed, i.e. chose the camera angles, set the tone of the picture, coached the actors, decided on the cuts to use, etc. But he was a (very talented) cog in the machine. He probably had no control over the final product - music, editing, etc. And note that as soon as he moved on to theatrical releases, he did not bring Goldenberg along! As for this music, it is quite serviceable for the TV movie. But it is safe to say that no one would listen to it on its own today if it weren't written for this early TV movie that happened to be directed by Steven Spielberg.

Could you do Walter Schumann's The Night of the Hunter?
@SoundtrackFred
@SoundtrackFred Жыл бұрын
Hello Ismael, that is a great idea. Unfortunately none of Schumann's music has been released properly. I say 'properly', because an album exists with his music, but featured with a constant narration by Charles Laughton. The album is great for what it is but with a narration over the music, we can hardly make a music suite without cutting the context of the told story apart. That would be rather tasteless, don't you think? Wishing you all the very best (and looking forward for a proper release of Schumann's music, to feature it here, some day!) Fred
