It is very obvious that the Inquisitor is unfamiliar with the Rapier (and why would a Daelish Elf know how to fight with a weapon only used by nobels in duells?) so it is only logical that the Inquisitor is struggling. In fact, it is a testimony to the skill of the Inquisitor that she/he could survive that long against an obviously skilled opponent.

Her character is one that prefers diplomacy over violence - when possible. She quit being a bard after she accidentally killed an acquaintance in a scuffle - she wanted you to take the diplomatic option to deal with the assassins attempting to kill her - and in this case she probably wanted you to let her deal with the marriage contract in her own way. Instead you put yourself in a position where, though unlikely, you could die/get hurt, or you could kill/hurt Lord Otranto - all over a matter that probably could have been resolved on her own end with a few letters written and favors called in.

Life can be annoyingly ironic when it comes to to something like this. There many stories of people surviving the worst of situations only to die on something silly. The ww1 soldiers who survived four years of trench warfare only to die of Spanish flu when they got home.

Well it is a public duel soo if anyone cheat everybody sees it. In a society where reputation is important public display of dishonesty can be damaging. In real life duels were mostly not held in public but with witness and a judge (most countries started to prohibit duels because noble kept killing eachothers)

To be fair a fencing duel is way different from a rough and tumble swordfight or even using dual daggers, it takes a lot more training, finesse, timing and strategy than one would think and on top of that this isn't wild, hack and slash deathmatch, it's a point based duel so charging in would be either ineffective or inappropriate for the circumstances. The Inquisitor (regardless of background) is untrained in using a rapier/epee/saber so it's only natural they'd struggle against someone experienced in these duels regardless of their personal skill on the battlefield.

Loghain will gladly fight a mage with all their power in a 1v1 duel, but Lord Otranto wimps out. On another note, technically the Inquisitor did win the duel since most sword duels end when at first blood.

I love everything about this scene, and finding one with an elf inquisitor like mine brings back happy memories of romancing Josephine. The rapier fight is actually really well staged and a good pick to show how any Inquisitor would be at a disadvantage against a skilled practitioner. The inquisitor fights with the seat-of-your-pants skill of someone whose had sword training but doesn't really know how to use a rapier, and you can see he could easily cut her down. He's just waiting for her to get tired or make a mistake so he can win without any real insult or damage. I didn't have the underworld perk for this scene in my playthrough, so I didn't see him lose his cool and thus his control with the blade... the wild stabs are so on point and show the control and skill he had before. And then Josephine rushing out and standing up to the Inquisitor like a boss... truly a partner, not a submissive. The best part is her reaction to saying "I love you," the spin, and that leg lift at the end. Her romance was sweet, chaste, and very satisfying.

One thing I hate about this dual is when you’re a sword fighter it still looks like you’re struggling. I can understand the movements for a Mage or Rogue because they wouldn’t be use to a sword even if the Inquisition has you training to use one.

So this actually does make a lot of sense in the context of historical swordplay! The Inquisitor would have trained with either a two-handed sword or a longsword/one-handed sword. Those are both very different weapons than a rapier. Rapiers are much lighter and were used to both attack and defend, while the Inquisitor would have been trained to either use a two-handed blade or a one-handed sword and shield. Rapiers were not designed to be brought onto a battlefield and were used exclusively for civilian dueling, and the way they were used was very very different than the kind of sword the Inquisitor would have been familiar with. Source: I am a huge weapons nerd and couldn't resist replying even though this comment is a year old.
