The intro bite is just so appropriate, I have no further words to comment on it🤣

I used to collect and fix TV sets until I had a 2 foot wide trench to go to bed. Today, I only own miniature CRT sets, 5" and smaller. A tad more manageable. 😅 All fits on one shelf. I watch other people work on these, so I don't have to! 😉 Nice picture at the end!!

I am a Brit and I can confirm everyone of us complains about a faulty TV in exactly the same way!

Replacing the tuner you need to sweep align the Video IF. The tuner to VIF stages is via an over coupled transformer that can only be sweep aligned. Especially critical in these sets:split sound with two upper adjacent, two lower adjacent and two sound traps. Once properly aligned, the RCA Victor picture quality is the best!

The KRK5 tuner was used on the KCS28-47 chassis's 1948 thru 1950.

Yep, that relatively massive lead sleeve on the tuner tube is not for radiation sake, not with the low voltages it runs at. I'm surprised it had a vibration problem requiring that, as newer TV tubes didn't, and I never ever saw any kind of microphonic effect in a tube TV of the kind I worked on in the 70s, but maybe it was just a vulnerability of that early model tube and this was the hack to keep the picture from "vibrating" along with the sound. I'd be curious to see what happens to the picture if that tube is tapped.

Thanks Bob, perfect timing, I was planning to start troubleshooting the contrast on my 630TS as it misses up the image, looks like I don't need to

You will see more about that soon in my Crosley 307TA project. It uses an RCA 630TS chassis.

Looking great, excellent job! Glad the replacement tuner worked out well. Were you able to get fine tuning to work when inside the cabinet?

I’d love to reach out to you about learning how to repair tube TVs. I’ve got a general electric from 52 that I would love to get working again. Only problem is I don’t know where to start and learning. TV repair shops are too few in Texas and I live in the country.

There is a good online sub-forum in Antique Radio Forums. There is also a couple of books (one by Grob) that can be downloaded free online. One of the first things is to find out if the CRT is good, replacements are nearly impossible to find, if the CRT is bad it more or less would be waist of time and money. You should work on a few vintage radios first anyway. Links are not allowed here.
