Extremely interesting video. It's funny how these things were still being sold not too long ago. Now they have the Lee Loader ll for around $50 and it seems to work great and is essentially portable. This system is fantastic for being out in the field/cabin or hunting environment and being able to reload fairly easily. It sort of reminds me of the old mountain men that carried their black powder and handy tools and devices with them while out in the field. Thanks for another informative video.

@astrologos100 I'll try to get some next time I'm in the studio, but I don't think the pictures will be very useful. The main tool that goes over the shell just goes from a straight cylinder inside, to a slight taper. The taper starts colosing the crimp, and the tool you hammer into the top to form the crimp is just a steel cylinder with a flat end. The flat end just hammers the crimp in. It only works on previously crimped shells.

Yes. The powder charge is just about entirely above the low brass base, and it is a low pressure round to boot, so the brass doesn't expand worth worrying about.
@erg0centric Жыл бұрын
And the brass is typically brass plated steel now. Much stronger.
@duelist195411 жыл бұрын
Use a washer if it makes you feel safer. As long as the primer is properly seater, a flat surface won't set it off. I've loaded a couple of thousand shells this way and never set off a primer.

I've been reloading shotshells with your N° 1 method for 50 years. If you use a cut down 20 gauge shell as a measure it's easier to pour the shot. I also use an old roll crimp tool instead of the star crimping tool. Works better for me. Nice videos.

What's a #12 scoop powder grain amount?
@duelist195411 жыл бұрын
If you load with smokeless powder, a shell will last for many firings, but with black powder I only use them once. The flame is so hot it makes the plastic brittle.

The over powder wad is your gas seal. It is much less porous than the cushion wad.

@danthman114 Any load from 60 grains to 80 grains will work in your situation. I think 70 to 75 grains will give the best performance.

As long as you use the appropriate powder charge, it should work fine. I've loaded quite a few buckshot shells using black powder.

To keep the shot from deforming due to the pressure of the powder charge going off.

I bought a Lee Loader for 12 gauge after watching your terrific video. The only thing that I'm nervous about is tapping the shell once its been primed. Couldn't it explode? Would it not be better to hold the shell on top of a washer or the round button of the loader so that the primer "floats" away from any pressure?
@JWheeler3313 жыл бұрын
Mike, how do you find the plastic shells hold up to the black powder? I am getting some things together to finally reload shotshells for an original 87 and have a few brass shells but have been curious about plastic shotshells also.

You can't get Lee Loaders on ebay without paying a lot. But check out Lane Reloaders. He makes kits for reloading shot shells. I got one for .410 and am eager to get going with it.

It appears you used the same components as in the video with home made tools. And yet in this video, the shell appeared to be completely full with a crimp. I can't comprehend why the shell with the home made tools had to be trimmed. The volume should have been similar. Also, does black powder take up more space in the shell than smokeless of the same power output? I have several hundred empty plastic shells and so I am learning what it takes to reload. Great video, thanks.

Does the crimp form with a new case?. It seems the the crimp follows the previously shaped folds in the case

when your krimping you should probably put your shell on that piece of metal from part one to avoid discharging your beautiful shell because of the debris on your table
@Ensign_Cthulhu11 жыл бұрын
As far as I can tell, the explanation is this: you can't crimp with the nail and dowel method, so you have to use alternative methods to seal the end of the shell. That means losing the crimp mouth part.
@papaya195511 жыл бұрын
Screwed once again attempting to purchase a lee loader on E-bay. I appreciate your vids, all awesome. I ended up buying a set of crimpers and will go with your 1st neanderthal nail & dowel method! Looks like a lot of fun. Not a fan of E-bay. scam... You remind me of a friend.

Yes, I think the days of $20 Lee shotshell loaders on Ebay are over, sadly. For the price some of them are going for, you could almost get yourself a new Load-All II and your first lot of primers, powder, wads and shot.

When I was a teen, there was a local gun shop that had all of the Lee Loader/MTM kits. I didn't realize what a gold mine it was until later. I bought a 20 gauge and 12 gauge kit. Since then, I've gotten a .45 Colt kit and a .223 kit. My shotgun shell kits are the more recent one with a lot of molded plastic components and a few more tools.

Do not use 209 primers where the load data calls for 209a. Federal made a 209 and a 209a magnum primer. Two totally different things.

@duelist19542 жыл бұрын
Modern shot shells have solid bases. All the action takes place above the brass, so the brass doesn't expand much, if at all. Brass shot shells are a different matter.

Old video, I know, but will this Lee Loader handle all sizes of 12 gauge shell or is it limited only to 2 3/4" or 3"? I don't think I've ever seen it specified anywhere. The photo of an older side by side hammer shotgun at the beginning of the video gives me hope that the loader can be used to reload and crimp an old fashioned 2 1/2" shell. Just trying to develop a setup to keep my Husqvarna model 20 running at a leisurely pace. Thanks.

what if i use the plastic wads?
@duelist195413 жыл бұрын
@mawadg Just pick the pastic wad that will give you a full column height with your selected powder charge and shot charge. You want the top of your load column to be right under the crimp of a completed shell, otherwise you will get a bad crimp.
