I've been watching for affordable antique loading tools for a couple of years. Last fall I got a mixed assortment of tubes, an adjustable scoop, and priming tools. Today I ran across a roll crimp tool. I'm all set.

Thank you for taking the time to do these videos. I picked up a Lee die press at a garage sale and in the bottom of the bucket was a Lee 12 gauge reloader like you featured. Got the whole shebang for $20. Thanks again.

You can get one of those crimpers new in the modern day for about 30 - 40 dollars. Thanks for this video series. I'm using a combination of your method with the dowel and nail and a crimping tool like that.

with the roll crimper. to get some smoother nicer looking rolls try using very little pressure at first so the friction warms up the plastic then gradually add pressure to form the roll. cool series and the vintage tools are nice to see.

I only use them once with black powder. The intense heat frys the plastic hulls. With smokeless you can load them many times.

Hey great video here! I've been reloading pistol and rifle for some time and I'm interested in reloading for 12 gauge. I have a lee loader and old style roll crimp tool and want to load various plastic hulls with fiber wads cards.. I would like to avoid using plastic wad cups.. All the load data I have is only for specific brands of plastic wads -cups. Maybe you could do a video on how to select plastic hulls and how to build the proper wad column based on the hull design and different shot shell loads?

Mike - Your video series has made the rounds and is being linked to in several different forums. The latest comments I saw were negative. Some people are unnerved when they see something being done that isn't printed in a book. I, personally don't see anything unsafe being done. I don't think shells loaded like this with black could generate enough pressure to be dangerous. I plan on using some of these to hunt squirrels this fall. Thanks for your efforts.

Having recently gotten back into reloading I'm trying to relearn certain basics or at least refresh my memory on others. This series of videos, especially this one, broth back a number of memories from my very earliest hunting (with various shotguns) days. I distinctly recall shooting factory loaded .410, 16, and 12 bore smokeless shells that looked exactly like your finished product in this video. When did the major manufacturers stop this method and go with the full crimp style common on todays shells? And why? My Dad purchased "our" shells back then and they were usually either of Winchester (most often) and Remington brands with the occasional Sears and Western Auto "trade names" showing up late in the dove and quail and still later small game seasons in South Carolina of the late 1950s to early 1970s. I know I pester you with a lot of questions but unless I'm badly mistaken you and I are of the same generation and that makes me a good bit more comfortable with the answers you provide. Thanks for a great series of videos on many areas of shooting/firearms and your articles in Guns of the Old West.

I load with black powder and I only reload a hul one time. The high heat of black powder combustion cooks the plastic, making it brittle.

I've been using my old Lee Loadall JR. mostly 1.5 oz.#5 over 3 drams or a 'brush Load' of 7/8 oz. reclaimed shot over 2 1/8 drams, I seal my hunting rounds with finger nail paint .. 'I' find it handy to write the shot size on the overshot wad....

It keeps the shot pellets from being deformed as they are blasted up the barrel.

I have a set of wooden Pioneer shotshell loading tools I bought for $5 in 1960. I have loaded 1000s of shells with it and killed lots & lots of dove & quail with them. It's slower than a press but I can load 30 shells in 15 minutes after I get my components lined up which only takes a minute or 2. My only problem is finding the paper and fiber wads I prefer. I still have enough to load about 150 shells and then I'll have to buy the plastic shot cups. Still a lot cheaper than factory made shells.

Neat little device. I especially like the old-fashioned roll crimper. Given that even modern loading books advise a roll crimp with some slugs, this seems like a good way to do it if you don't have a drill press for the devices they sell now; and even if you do, the manual method means you can take your time and not risk "overdoing it" when you first start out. And how many slugs are you going to load all at once, after all? Certainly not in the quantities trap and skeet shooters need!
@duelist195413 жыл бұрын
@mmcilwain12347 I only use black powder hulls once. The heat makes them very brittle.

@duelist1954 as for a good gun you are within spec of the barrel but if you go higher you may blow up pretty easy so 32 is the recommended load for this type of reloading if you don't use a scale. for the rest BEST VIDEO on reloading for the MAN who don't mind doing it by himself.
@mmcilwain1234713 жыл бұрын
Mike, enjoyed the video series. Have a question. when using a roll crimp, how many times are you able to reload the hull?
@abrampl4 жыл бұрын
I saw this roll crimp at paper shells. Very long time ago ...
@aliaj0012 жыл бұрын
@duelist1954 that is OK thanks for the video its informative but keep in mind that the cup for the powder and the shot is volumetric and you can finish with 1.5-1.6 grams or even 1.8 easily without noticing. and 31-33 grams for the shot presuming that is a 32 shot and all the balls are the same shape and size.

Do you trim the hulls for roll crimping the same length that you do for the glue crimp?
@lmomechtech770911 жыл бұрын
First off, I enjoyed the 3 part series on getting the shot shells back into shooting shape. What I would like to ask, at this 'normal' load that you are using, about how many times might you expect to reuse the plastic shell hulls? When you use Lee loader and have the 'star' crimp, does that reduce the amount of times you can reload same hull? And again, with the 'roll' crimp, how many times...just for reference; I would expect that by 'working' the shells by crimping and re-crimping=less reuse?
@TheRantingCabbie11 жыл бұрын
Interesting to see these old tools. One thing I did notice however is when your tamping the powder, wads and shot, wouldn't it be safer to place the shell on the de-priming base?

paper hulls are easier to get a hold of these days. antique tools are easy to find ,and simple to use . since I use them in my hammer shotguns , for hunting , I use glue for the roll crimp, and spray the outside of the shell to waterproof , with lacquer. 12 gauge 235 stevens hammer shotgun , 3 drams of powder and a ounce an and eighth of number 5 shot lead shot.
@duelist195411 жыл бұрын
No, I trim them about an eighth of an inch longer

@FourFingersofDeath I've found that new ones are being made, this site sells manual roll crimpers (siarm dot com goto reloading->various equipment) but it's a european site. But likely there should be some american dealers one would think. Planning to pick one of these up and see how it works.

apologies if I'm stupid but how does the dowel seat the primer if the centre of the dowel isn't bored out to accept the dowel?
@duelist19543 жыл бұрын
The base of the shot shell is quite thick. The primer is totally enclosed in the bottom of the shell.

Really cool looking tools. Stuff just doesnt have the personality it used too. Its like, when you use an old tool like that. Even when you just pick it up. You feel connected to the past, the previous craftsman that toiled over that tool both in its construction and use over the years. Maybe im just a nostalgic old fool. But i like this old timey stuff, it really brings me joy.

xzqzq I was considering using hot glue. How well does it work? Have you lost any loads?
@xzqzq9 жыл бұрын
Armed Bear Hot glue works great.... I've loaded hundreds of shells with it. After going through two hot glue guns, I started using a small steel pot on a hotplate. Lately, I have switched to Goop, which I get at the hardware store. Works just as well, and I don't burn my fingers... the smell will give me a headache after a while. Ventilation helps.
