Hi Duf. I have watched all your videos because I am learning on my Gotway mcm2 340battery and 500 motor. I am 81 and thought it would be great to have a go and I am. due to your excellent videos I have progressed to travelling quarter of a mile so far. Unfortunately the weather here in England doesn't help. But your videos do. Thank you for all the help you have given me. I do wear a lot of protection which restricts me a bit so I am looking forward to when I am proficient and do not need so much protection. I know my old bones will take a long time to repair but I have to do it and see what happens.Thank you and Cindy for your videos, I thoroughly enjoy them. Regards. Ken Bland.

Hi Duf. Progress is slow. I am having great difficulty jumping on and it seems that I never will be able to do it. I have watched your vid where you are attempting to get on and it was difficult eh. I must persevere though as I will not fail. I might end up with broken bones . I have already hurt my wrists and cracked a rib in my back but I will keep going. This thing will not beat me. Not if I keep watching you excellent vids. Thank Duf. Regards, Ken.

Yea try practicing the one foot on ground drills. Put your dominant leg on the wheel, get your calf pretty tight against it and then consciously push that knee inward which will brace and lock that leg to the wheel, making it strong enough to step on with the other leg in a more controlled manner. You can also practice this while holding onto a railing. I am not sure if you told me what type of EUC you have?

Thanks duf. I will just have to practice more. I have a Gotway mcm2 340 battery and a 500motor. Good enough to go a fair way when I am able. I will update you when my progress is better. I did two runs of a quarter mile today. Bit wobbly. I would have thought or hoped that I wouldn't be wobbling by now.

Old guy here (69 years), I got a V8F a couple of months ago, have about 115 miles on it now. Before I ordered the V8F, and while waiting for it to arrive, I repeatedly looked at several how to ride EUC videos, including yours. Based on the videos I saw, I bought a mountain bike full face helmet, and 187 wrist guards (as part of a helmet, wrist, elbow, and knee guard pack for skateboards). I used support for mounting and launching, initially at a tennis court, where it only took a few minutes to be able to arm flail (flail left to steer right and vice versa), steering into direction of fall for balance, and to direct the EUC where I wanted it to go, doing laps at a tennis court. This was almost reflexive. 40 years ago, a friend loaned me his unicycle for a couple of hours, and I was able to use yaw steering back then. I'm not sure why this was natural for me. A couple of days later, I switched to a location with a long straight where I felt comfortable with going a bit faster, where at about 6 mph to 8 mph, the V8F was mostly stable on its own, allowing me to focus on leaning forwards|backwards for speed control, and experimenting with tilt steering since I had no clue how the V8F would respond. After a few passes, I was able to weave side to side using tilt steering, and the next day I worked on doing large radius 180 degree turns. I rode for about a week before attempting free mount, my one and only time on grass. Since I already knew how to ride, I didn't bother trying to do one foot glide, just a couple of steps and hop on. After being able to basically ride, I worked on turns, trying to reduce the number of mid-turn corrections and also leaning and conscious tilt steering for balance and turning, which is slowly evolving into a reflexive reaction. I'm working on tilting more for smaller radius turns, but where I'm riding (paved bike trail, long and wide pathway at a large park, local private streets, ...), my current tilt steering is good enough. Another thing I've worked on is being able to look to the side (like checking for traffic) or looking down right after launch to reposition my feet if needed, without affecting balance on the EUC.

Salutations from the UK, I looked around at different options and ordered an inmotion v3 for £250. It arrived today, I pumped up the tires to the right pressure, and took it to the park. I stumbled off it many times. after 45 min I was able to ride, speed u slow down and turn corners using my hips. it really did not take that long to learn on this one. I put down to it having two wheels side by side that increase the stability. The wheel is scratched all over from learning, but I honestly don't mind as it did not cost a fortune like you said in the video.
@Duf
@Duf 5 жыл бұрын
The V3 dual tire definitely makes it easier to learn on since balancing is a lot easier. I even considered one of them myself in the beginning. I didn't because I worried it wouldn't teach me how to ride a single tire EUC.

Hiya Duf, greetings from Norway. Nice video with a lot of good tips for beginners. I started riding about the same time you did (summer '16), and remember you posting your less than pro-riding videos over at the EUC forums. ^_^ Anyways, I have an aditional tip that ties well into your hint about not being afraid to fall. Shortly after I started riding a friend of mine borrowed my cheap generic wheel (I had traded up by then) and had a real struggle trying to stay on it. Then one day he just GOT it, and he managed to put it way more articulately than I ever could. He told me that he suddenly decided that "what the heck" and started accelerating hard, and THAT was when he started to ride properly. The wheel is JUST like a bike: If you stand still you tip to one side. Go slow and you'll easily tip. Add some speed and you suddenly gain much more stability. And beginners are afraid to go fast because they don't want to fall, so they stick with the snail pace, thus making it harder for themselves.
@Duf
@Duf 7 жыл бұрын
Yes that is true for sure although there is a fine line between fast enough and too fast! :)

My first wound wasn't from falling. My left ankle bone was rubbed raw the first few hours I rode. Had it 5 days now. That wounded ankle has made it hard to controle. So high top boots is another protective tip. I notice you were wearing boots.

took me around 4hrs of practice leaning on a wall untill i started adding more speed, at first i was really afraid of letting go to that wall, every time i would let go with my hand i'd start flailing about with my arms trying to find my balance. but after a couple of km of trial and errors i'd just let go and started to go a bit forward, then a bit more. all in all i think i practiced for 8hrs untill i felt i was good enough to drive my euc in the streets, when i was practicing i think i drove around 20km just up and down a very tiny ally. now i have drivven 110km on it or close enough and currently i feel like i would like to try my euc without the speed limiter that i had before of 20km/h

Very useful! Speaking as a long-time motorcyclist, I'd add that not only should you look where you want to go, but do NOT look at where you DON'T want to go (target fixation). Had a novice racer fixate on me mid-slide (low side getoff, NBD, just heading for the hay bales on my back - I was out of 'traffic', far from 'the line') who f'ing fixated on me - and ran over my leg. Also, from learning roller blading, if you have skiing experience, the first time you go down a super-steep hill your reaction is going to be to 'sit' into the hill. If that's you, there's a piece of gear called a 'hockey girdle' that'll add padding on the outsides of your hips. Gotta wonder if that'll be useful here, too. I've a couple of questions. Do you let the wheel move around between your legs, and stay relatively upright - like dirt bikes - or do you lean in, like street bikes? Or do you change it up, depending on surface? And are there road tracks where these get raced? I'm in New England, haven't ridden through a winter since I was in my 20s (70 now). Every Spring, I'd make a point of re-learning my riding skills before getting back out into traffic. Might be a good thing to do for any EUC riders in snowy-winter places.

For me at least I don't agree, I tried using aids like that initially and I found myself leaning on them way too heavily. It didn't feel like they helped my body how to actually balance on the wheel.

For me it became the easiest way, allowing me to drive off road in the forest on the 2nd day of training. I still bring my sticks if I want some real fun with high speed and tight corners in the woods. Maybe it's because I come from Norway and we're just as used to ski poles as you Americans are for shoes. So we have no problem using them for other purposes, while you may have to learn the appropriate use of your sticks in addition..?

Once I got to the getting on without help then wobbling off in a random direction stage, I picked a couple of points 25ft apart on the parking grid I was on and tried to head for the point, slow down and stop on it, then one legged turn round 180 and launch to the point I started at etc etc. It teaches you direction control, stopping and starting and turning around. All things you will need when driving on crowded streets. As you said, you need to stay in a big clear space at first, and it is too easy to just drive about wherever your wobbles take you, with no structured practice.

Good set of tips for newbies. I would stress tip #3. There are so many things that can go wrong while riding - distractions, pebbles, potholes - some of which are outside your control - cars, pedestrians, animals - and an unexpected fall on asphalt or concrete can easily result in broken bones, or worse. Always wear protective gear.

Brett Patton Thanks for asking. I haven’t been able to practice much because of the weather in NY. I’m better at getting on and leaning to go forward vs. being focused on getting my foot on the pedal and falling. When I do get going and it picks up speed, I get nervous and lose my balance. I need to practice in an open space longer. I’ve been practicing in my 700 sq ft. apartment and the building’s hallway 😁
@TheLillianYoung
@TheLillianYoung 5 жыл бұрын
@@BrettL250 Better. I found an indoor place to practice - a long hallway with a marble floor. I can now ride a few more feet, but not the full length of the hallway. I find myself starting to lean to one side, swinging my arms and losing my balance after a few feet. I do best when I look forward, get on, put pressure on my front toes and lean forward, upright. When I overthink it, like thinking more about making sure my foot lands on the pedal on takeoff, I freeze up and lose control. But I am definitely more confident and haven't fallen yet.

The reason i got it was because i watched dozens and dozens of reviews, im also 265lbs and 6"0 so this supported my weight nicely and has a excellent range. Spent about $1400 and should have it tomorrow. I have been riding around a Ninebot mini and ate the concrete pretty hard a few times. I like the fact that the wheel seems to handle bumps better than the Ninebot does. I have the helmet and wrist guards and i'm looking forward to having some fun with this. LIke you i live in Florida (Orlando) and know no one who has one of these or anyone that has ever even seen one in person so wish me luck LOL.

i tried to talk with people on that forum, but the 6 messages per day drove me insane. my first euc became a Kingsong KS16s, haven't regretted it yet xD it's fun to drive :D but yeah i kinda understand the people that constantly dropped their expensive wheels, the ks16s costed me around 1300£ which is a fair bit over 1200$. since i never drove on a unicycle before that one (i have only had it for 2 weeks) it was hard for me to learn at the beginning, but i felt "i have spent this much, they are made to take a beating, so i better learn" xD and yes, if i had used the same mentality that i use when i care for my phone, then i would have cried, all those bumps and bruices my euc have just because i couldn't hold my balance in the beginning xD it took me about 4 days, with 1-2 hrs of training each day, to learn to drive my euc, after that i have drivven about 90km on it :D

lolsa123 you just voiced my thoughts. I got the 16S after A LOT of research. Overall a great wheel value v. price. I took a 2-hour private lesson at around 15-20$ to learn on someone else’s wheel and see if I liked it. I then got the 16s and only trained in a school yard near home to get the basic start/stop and control. Then i more and more comfortable and went out to a park at night. I regretted it (( my poor baby got scratched and dented a bit because I wasn’t comfortable on slopes yet even though i felt ok during the day in the yard. But again, you need to ride a lot. I did 65km in two days and each km adds to my skill. I dont use the protection any more because i ride very defensively, just like my motorbike. I only accelerate when it is empty and otherwise I cruise and chill among people. I still practice slow speed control for pedestrian crossings and human traffic in rush hour. Anyone can ride fast, but not slow control. So just practice a lot and dont get crazy over speed. This is dangerous stuff so exercise caution and awareness))

Two thumbs up for this video. Great treat for any beginner. One question: As of today, what is your favorite wheel? I started - like you - on the E+, which I still love to ride for fine-tuning my movements and practicing tricks, got myself a KS16 and are now riding the Gotway ACM with great pleasure. Last week I ordered the Msuper V3+ that you ride so skillfully and in incredible (insane) speeds backwards. Your video on riding backwards inspired me a lot! Thank you for sharing this experience. I am still struggling with the backwards part.
@Duf
@Duf 7 жыл бұрын
I would say my favorite all around wheel is the Msuper although I need to get a new shell and trolley handle to make it look pretty again after all the damage it took while learning to ride backwards. :) The Monster is very close and may overtake the Msuper on my list as I get more and more comfortable on it. I also still plan on getting an ACM but I need to wait a bit to recover from the spending binge I have been on.

I bought the Inmotion v10 wheel as my first. Hmmm it is daunting, but I weighed the pros and cons and I cant really afford to buy bigger and better when I outgrow training wheel. The v10 doesnt accelerate too quickly, but that 43 mile battery life is what I mostly wanted, plus the reviews mentioning its stability and comfortability. Too late now, I gotta work with what I got. Luckily I have the protective cover to keep it from getting dinged up. Need something to protect the bottom of the pedals when it falls but I am not too concerned for them. Wish me luck! Gonna take it slow and steady gonna try to practice in grass field and do my best to not damage it too much.

Duf man, Really nice video. I just finally made my purchase for my first wheel. I grabbed the MTen3 84v 512wh. After watching your videos and everyone else’s video on the suspension wheels I was really sure I was headed that direction. But between the crappy build quality of the KSS18 (exposed by Alien Rides and evX reviews) and the recent problems of the V11 I had to rethink if I wanted a super heavy wheel that still had not worked out all the kinks on it’s latest upgraded feature. So why the MTen3? Well, a couple weeks ago reviewers were all posting about the MTen3, just out of the blue. Like it was a new wheel. Took me a moment to realize that GW made a cheaper but still powerful new version. Anyhow, I was quickly reminded why I started looking at EUCs in the first place; get a PEV that was powerful in the most portable package. Then, what really sold me was one could go slow walking speed and still be balanced upright and then switch it up to 20mph if needed. As Marty has pointed out this makes for a good first wheel yet it is one you wont out grow because it is so versatile. I have heard a lot that the MTen3 is completely different to ride than other wheels. Are there any time you have for first time riders riding the MTen3? Thank you for making these awesome videos.
@Duf
@Duf 4 жыл бұрын
The issue I have for the Mten3 being a first wheel is the only way to mount it is to hop on/off of it because of it's small size. It doesn't allow you to learn the leg bracing technique used on more conventional sized wheels which allows you mount/dismount in a smooth fashion.
@letssamplethis7641
@letssamplethis7641 4 жыл бұрын
Duf That’s a really good point. I have been watching a ton of MTen3 videos and I have found some riders/reviewers that SEEM to be doing the leg bracing technique. I have also seen videos where riders were doing the “hop-on-off”. Hell, there was one rider that grabbed the handle to help stabilized the wheel and then hop-on with both feet. I’m more interested in the leg or what looks more like ankle bracing technique and thankfully there are riders on youtube who do that. Thanks for getting back to me on the difference of learning the MTen3 vs standard wheels.

A question....Now you can go backwards, do you think you would eventually be able to stay in one spot like you do on a pedal unicycle by going Fwds, back, Fwds about 6" or a foot? not sure about a trainer/starter wheel theory, just buy the wheel that suits your needs (commute/trail/distance etc). if you get a popular model you can stick it on ebay anytime. You will outgrow a $500 wheel quickly and hard to shift on ebay, cheap wheels have no power to kick off with and very very hard to learn, frustrating. My wheel (MCM5) does 20miles but i already want more.

One other thing, I never see fat people riding these even though some of them look sturdy enough to hold them, I wonder why that is. Ok I'm not talking massively obese people cos you don't normally see them doing much other than sitting in chairs, but I'm talking generally fat like 200/250 pound people or even muscle guys who weigh a lot but are all muscle could that be due to the issue of falling over or is it just that the machines can't hold their weight? What would happen if a heavy guy tried to ride one of these, as I said all I ever see are the sporty types riding them. Do you have many of these wheels and know a fat guy that you could test this out with if they are willing to try it out?

I took my very first rides a few days ago. First was the Inmotion V8. I dropped it a lot. Luckily it was wearing a protective cover. Then came the Ninebot Z10. The guy riding said it may be easier. Teased me not to drop the expensive wheel. I did finally ride the Z10 after about 45 mins. of trying to learn on the V8. I found the Z10 much easier than the V8. I was worried about the weight and power of the Z10. The Z10 was very smooth. I thought of it as a "gentle" monster! The wheel looked like a wheel Darth Vader would ride. Ominous! The greater weight seemed smoothed out much of my wobbliness. My longest rides that day were while riding the Z10. I never, yet, felt that the wheel, due to its power, would suddenly get way. It didn't. Maybe riding around the parking lot did not create a situation for me to loose control of the wheel. Go figure. Just sharing what happened a few days ago. Thanks Duf for the tips and your videos.....

Bubble wrap the !@#$ out of your wheel if it's your first wheel.

I did try that for a short time but I found it made riding the wheel pretty awkward.
