Crikey, This brings back the memories. Started at No 80 & finished 26th. Final proof that I was NEVER going to make it as a professional rally driver, but I wouldn't change a thing. Pity no one ever got any video of my TR7 V8?

The 80's were the best rally years, I loved it. I suspect a world Grp N car would be as quick as these were then, but the whole experience was awsome, respect.

Funny how Russel's attitude about crashes changed from the late '70s when interviewed about Pentti's sentiment, "Every driver should roll at least once or twice a year to show that he is still pushing!"

I remember reading an artical from the eighties of when an audi quattro was car "0" on a british championship round and beat the field by a ridiculas amount of time. I 've been adicted since 1979.

Oh My God.That was what rallying is about. The entry list is like a who-is-who of driving legends.VATANEN,TOIVONEN,MIKKOLA,BLOMQUIST...,sideways all the time, great open roads, you got more excitement from a single rally then ,than you do with a full season of Loeb- vs- himself now. No wonder people enjoy historic rallies nowadays more than modern s#*t!!!

same here mate wud love to be born in dads days also, i wud have deffo tryed gettin into rallyin back then, done next best thing tho bought mk2 escort last year lol

Ari Vatanen was champion with one in 1981, so it was believed it would still be competitive in 1982. That despite the fact that the old rear wheel drive Escort had been replaced by a new generation of front wheel drive Escorts in 1981. Vatanen only managed a 2nd place in the Swedish Rally 1982, and the legendary rear wheel drive Ford Escort was retired from WRC. Considering it was up against the modern Audi Quattros, Toyota Celica 2000GT's and the insane Opel Ascona 400, its reign was over.

Considering ford hadn't put much in the way of manufacturer backing behind the mk2 since 1980, it still being competitive in 81 as a privateer is impressive let alone 82. I remember watching an interview with him when he talks about the 82 escort says it was the ultimate escort, beautiful to drive, one of the most fun cars he ever drove. He also said he struggled with the manta because he likes a car to naturally oversteer and the manta wanted to understeer, he had to make it oversteer.

Group 4, which then became Group B. Then the FIA screwed it all up, as usual.
